Season 27 Amateurs Trophy - Round 5 – East London

The fifth round of the Season 27 championship for the Amateurs will be hosted on the 1960's layout of the Prince George circuit.

Opened in the 1930s, it hosted the South African Grand Prix in 1934, and 1936 to 1939 when racing was halted due to World War II. The original circuit was shortened to 17.7 kilometres in length in 1936. Modified to meet Formula One regulations in 1959, the track was built into a seaside amphitheatre. It hosted three rounds of the F1 South African Grand Prix in the 1960s until the increasing power and speed of the cars meant that it became too small for Formula One. The race was moved to Kyalami.

This is a course with a high speed start and then some tight twisty corners. The last corner, in particular can be tricky and is important to set up the next lap.

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

The race will be run under INT rules and only one reset is allowed, followed by a stop and go in the pits.

I will be away from my computer for East London, but I should be able to race at Solitude. Good luck everyone!

Bad Luck for John P.
He was put out of the track on the 1st lap/1st turn by another racer. Then he had an accident with Billy (I don't know who was responsible).
I was lucky to resist and finally to win, because he was so much quicker than me !
Grats John, I hope I don't block you over what is acceptable !

I took a cautious start and was 3rd at the end of the 1st lap (1st : Kai J and 2nd Rog) but after 2 or 3 laps, Kai J, who was so fast during qually, slowed down and made several mistakes (too much pressure ?).
Rog overtook him but I was not able to do it.
And more, I made a mistake trying to brake after the limits ...
I restarted 8 or 9 ...just behind John !
Then it was a very enjoying race until I took the lead after 14 laps.
The 20 final laps was terrific with John P giving a pressure without break.

I owe a very big apology to Kai.
About 1/3 distance, I ran into his rear end on the approach to Beacon Bend. We had been racing very closely for a few laps & I am quite sure that I braked at the right point. Whether it was draft or Kai braking a little early I'm not sure but it was my mistake. A real shame because there were some great battles going on & Kai jus had taken 1st place after a small mistake from Rog through the Esses. This allowed Rainier & Johnny to inherit 1st & 2nd. I did consider retiring after ruining Kai's race but as there were less than 10 cars starting I decided it was better to carry on.
Good win for Rainier. Not so competitive from Dave C, but another fastest lap.

A great race and we'll earned win for Dave R- I found myself in the scenery on lap 1 and had a small coming together with someone kindly letting me past late on- Bernie I think- sorry. I had great fun trying to catch Rainier he was faster than me through turn one and I spent the rest of the lap trying to catch him.  My front left kept over heating and giving my some trouble but a really fun race. Congrats to Dave for a great drive.
I may miss the next 2 races but if I'm lucky I may just get in for 9.30. Thanks all.

I thought for one brief moment I had you off and was relieved you could carry on  :)  Getting used to being lapped these days , you guys are so much faster , don't know why but I must be doing something wrong .

Ah! yes , that's it . I just need to drive quicker  ::)

Struggled a bit with that one.  Too many spins/excursions & other bumps/scrapes.   Including a moment when my steering wheel bracket mounting bolt pinged/distracted me whilst braking for that tight one near the blue tearooms.   Shame;  I'd just managed to edge up to the group ahead by that time.

Was then way back & continued to lose any ground I'd been gaining.

At the end,  was catching Rog,   but not by enough. Maybe another 1-2 laps would have been useful :)   but there again;   maybe he would have continued to manage the gap.

I was doing my bit for the Amateur status by spinning/crashing etc,  but I couldn't seem to see similar actions elsewhere.  You are clearly all too good!   :D

Good going podium;  good haul of team points there too!

Cheers all,
Dave.

Massively disappointing. The car felt like a bar of soap in qually and I was not happy with it. Tweaked a few things and it was driveable but no time to set a really fast lap.

In the race, made up a few places early on and settled into chasing down Dave C and the rest. Bumped Dave on Lap 1 when he came to a virtual stop ahead of me. Sorry mate. Gentle tap didn't cause either of us difficulty and he span off later on so I was chasing Bill in a comfy fourth.

Span at the last corner inexplicably and set off again after losing a few places and then span four times in the same lap. Not sure what was going on but I wonder whether the paddles on the wheel where double shifting down. Gave up in disgust....

Should have kept going but I was very tired last night.

Well done to everyone who took part.

Shaving 6/10 on my PB was enough only for the 5th place on the starting grid.
I had a good race start but then I probably tried one more pass and I crashed with Johnny on turn 1: luckily we were both able to re-start without big damages, I guess.
Then I was only able to pass Bernie and I raced alone until the checquered flag.
Grats to everybody raced and to my Black Night's mates that scored points for the team.
See you in Solitude.
Cheers

fL

Had good start and chased the leader Kai J, he made mistake lap 4 giving me lead, great racing with him until lap 14 at approach to the Esses the Fez decided to go cross country (still don`t no why after watching replay) rejoined in 5th then noticed Kai J had disappeared which gave me 4th, tried to keep the tow with Billy but he soon left me behind, then had Dave C closing in so glad when race finished.

Grats to Rainier on win
Grats to Podium
