Season 27 Friday Trophy - Rounds 21 & 22 - Imola - Sport Cars

Welcome to the next round for the Friday Trophy, we stay in Imola. Named for the Ferrari heir, Dino, the track was renamed as the Autodromo Enzo e Dino after Enzo's death in 1988.
The track was inaugurated in 1953, and it had no chicanes, so the run from Rivazza all the way to Tosa, through the pits and the eventually notorious Tamburello was totally flat out, as was the run from Acque Minerali all the way to Rivazza was just a long straight with a few small bends; and the circuit remained in this configuration until 1972. Long time home of the San Marino Grand Prix (and once of the Italian Grand Prix) the circuit is fast, bumpy and dangerous.
After the deaths of Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna in 1994, the track was remodelled to reduce speeds but we use the original, high speed layout. Luckily the worst we can suffer is a disconnect.

This seasons tracks will be easy and well known to have a smaller time gap between the lights and heavies,
if there is a too big gap on a track, a stop and go for the lights in the 30min race will be recommended!

This is really designed to be a fun series with 3 different car mods
- running 1 sprint length race of ~15 min and a ~30 min race with the same car.
- ONE SHIFT-R with NO Stop n Go

Light drivers are restricted to use a Mirage M1, Porsche 910 or a Ford GT40 MK4
Heavy drivers will allways have a free car choice!

I am surprised. I thought that the Porsche 910 was a good choice for Imola. Thanks for the Chap 2F set-up!

Walter, the top Porsche time is made by the Master of the Porsches -> 1:37.168 Sergio Lonzar
I bet this time will be forever...
Just not enough power to compete with any Chap  :P
Only the Porsche can do Tamburello flat  :scooter:

IMO the Lola and Ferrari are also good choices here.

Sorry to Dave on the tap in race 2, lap 1. After a mini-freeze, I was down the inside at Piratella, and it was too late to turn left or brake enough to not collide. Apart from that.. great race in race 1 for the wooden spoon! We both tried hard to get it

I'll hopefully be able to start joining in again on these soon - Missed last night due to fitting a new diff to the Nissan

I was fourth at the end of the 8th lap... until my engine exploded  :(
Nice race with (against)  Dean and King before that.

Tough round again for me.  Mk4 a difficult beast to hustle around Imola but Axel and Greg made it look easy.  Grats guys.  I managed to squeeze past Axel in race 2 start, but no chance to catch Greg - whom I suspect sacrificed something to Cthulhu to get a Mirage going so fast  ;D

My MK4 setup was great with lots of reserve for security.

Was a nice MK4 battle until I made two mistakes into Tosa after my catch ups :-[
To me it looked as if you had sacrified your 1st gear for the better start...

Greg had a little  :sorcerer: help to understand the SC mod better before the race ;D

It's the only thing I'm able to win! :)
Tried running with the 'usual' setup,  but was not working out for me.  Of course,  some practice would have been ideal; but would not have made much difference.

For race2,  dumped the setup & just ran default,  which seemed a little easier to drive.
DSL dropped out (again) before 50% distance,  but was hoping to run a little better following the practice of event1.

Never mind.  Hopefully CanAms will be easier to drive round here.

Cheers,
Dave.

:) , no sacrifices to demons Mark. Axel gave me his setup and later made me realize I've been running the wrong tire pressures with the GT mod for 3 years now. A few minor adjustments and the proper tire pressures really made the Mirage drive good. It was nice to do a decent Jacky Ickx impersonation.

Axel is very impressive with the Mk IV. I can't stand the heavy beast myself.

A tough round? Axel and I only scored one more point than you for the event. We've really been close the last four events often scoring within 1 point of each other.

That was a lot of fun. Historically, the GT mod is tied for my favorite mod with the original 67 F1s. For actual driving I enjoy the 67 F1s, 71 Can Ams, and 69X mods more. I've always like the GT mod but I suspect I'll grow to like it more now, since I now know I've been running my tires 3-4 psi lower than I should have. I immediately gained 2 seconds per lap at Hockenheim 67 in the 330 with the correct tire pressures.

This new found speed in the 67 GTs got me wishing more for a 71 GT mod. Can't think of anything I'd rather see added to GPL. That would let me drive three of my most favorite cars of all time, the Alfa 33/3, 917, and 512. It would probably take me 2 or 3 years to get tired of doing nothing but Helmut Marko impersonations at Targa Florio.

The 2D ought to be much nicer the next time I drive it. It has been giving me terrible trouble with the tires. I may have looked supernatural at Enna with the proper setup Mark. :)

Hopefully, I'll be back next week to give my best impersonation of Mario Andretti.

Once again, thanks Axel. You've probably done as much or more than anybody to make me a faster driver.

Take care guys.

...and that's why I say it was a tough round  :)  :)

One thing again is how much narrower the track seems in a GT car compared to a F1 car.  The CanAms will likely be epic round here.  71 Gt's would be brilliant, but the mod team I think is booked through to about 2035...

Anyway, I would also like to thank Axel so very much for helping out Greg so he's super fast!    ;D
