Title: UKGPL Season 27 (2014) Friday Trophy - Imola - Oct 10

Season 27 Friday Trophy - Rounds 23 & 24 - Imola - CanAm 71

Welcome to the next round for the Friday Trophy, we stay in Imola. Named for the Ferrari heir, Dino, the track was renamed as the Autodromo Enzo e Dino after Enzo's death in 1988.
The track was inaugurated in 1953, and it had no chicanes, so the run from Rivazza all the way to Tosa, through the pits and the eventually notorious Tamburello was totally flat out, as was the run from Acque Minerali all the way to Rivazza was just a long straight with a few small bends; and the circuit remained in this configuration until 1972. Long time home of the San Marino Grand Prix (and once of the Italian Grand Prix) the circuit is fast, bumpy and dangerous.
After the deaths of Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna in 1994, the track was remodelled to reduce speeds but we use the original, high speed layout. Luckily the worst we can suffer is a disconnect.

This seasons tracks will be easy and well known to have a smaller time gap between the lights and heavies,
if there is a too big gap on a track, a stop and go for the lights in the 30min race will be recommended!

This is really designed to be a fun series with 3 different car mods
- running 1 sprint length race of ~15 min and a ~30 min race with the same car.
- ONE SHIFT-R with NO Stop n Go

Light drivers are restricted to not use the big 4: McLaren M8F+D, Lola T260 and Shadow MK2
Heavy drivers will allways have a free car choice!

I ran across some stuff about Group 7 cars you guys might find interesting.

Here's a quote from Vic Elford:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuji_Speedway

"In 1969 I spent two months in Japan doing a test contract for Toyota and their Toyota 7 (5 litre V-8), which along with a big Nissan (6.3 litre V-12), was destined for CanAm. My last testing and then the subsequent Sports Car GP were at Fuji, but the track was run in a clockwise direction. The reason that banking was so horrific, was that at the end of the straight we went over a blind crest at around 190/200 mph and dropped into the banking. At other tracks (Daytona, Monthlery, etc.) you climb up the banking. One of the results was that although there were many brave Japanese drivers there were not too many with great skill and the death toll from that one corner was horrendous. To such an extent that the big Gp 7 cars were then banned in Japan and thus, neither Nissan or Toyota ever made it to CanAm."

1969 Nissan R382

And this one!!!!! Wow, a possible 900hp turbocharged Can Am Nissan before 1971!?!?

1968 Japanese Grand Prix. Some video of the R381 in action:

1969 Japanese Grand Prix. Some video of the R382 in action: Jo Siffert was there in a 917 with the original low tail plus plenty of the Toyota 7s.

There's also a video on Youtube called "Best Motoring - Racing History Vol.1 Nissan [R380 R381 R382]"
I think it is the cars' designer and one of the drivers talking about the cars. It's too bad I don't understand Japanese. If I understood what they're saying I'd enjoy that video more than I did.

I hope you enjoy. Let me know if this is all new to you too. It was to me.

Yes, thanks GREG !!!.

Nissan R381 and R382 were beautiful cars ! it' s a pity they couldn't compete against the Porsche, Ferrari, Matra, Alfa, Lola and Ford of the World Championship of these times.

(and it's not Monthlery but Montlhéry, I live at 30 km from this track and went there many times between 1969 and 1976, my picture from Pescarolo's Alfa 33TT3 was taken there)    ;)

That was good fun! Congratulations Mark, Axel, Tom, and kinghiro!

It looks like I should have practiced more. I struggled with consistency. Dean's was even worse than mine.

It's difficult entering the turns while in the slipstream. Is it just the higher speed or do we lose downforce when trailing another car? My car was lousy entering the turns and much more prone to lock the wheels.

Thanks guys. I appreciate it.

I think you do lose downforce whilst in the slipstream. I seem to recall the code calculation extra lift when that occurs. In any case the speeds are higher so you have to brake earlier to stop in time :D .

No setup no practice so a third was a welcomed surprice in the first race. Second I was more where supposed to and had fun trying to defend vs Greg. I guess I could held my line when he attacked at sf line, but chose to give way and slowed. Greg backed off too so after a bit confusion I saw him reenter from the grass. I should have been able to stay on track and not hit him, but went a bit far right and had a long slow turn on the grass. Never managed to close the gap and ended sixth wich was ok after all.

Great racing with lots of fun action  ;D

In Quali1, what a showdown in the last lap, I managed to succeed with -0.003sec to Mark... (This is not MotoGP!)
Race 1 was perfect from the pole just controling the gap until last lap when I had a little blackout into Rivazza,
but it was enough to keep in front of hard pressing Tommie :P

In Quali2 I did not manage to make a perfect lap and had to start from 4th.
But Gregs and Deans problems presented me 2nd with Tommie allways in my neck  ;D

A shame no Heavy showed  :o
I hope this will change for Monza 10k...

PC problems last night & more troubling was DSL being more down than up,  which was what kept me away.
Not that I'd have achieved much anyway.

Sounds like there may have been some good scrapping though!

Cheers,
Dave.
