Post by: BadBlood on October 05, 2014, 09:00:35 PM +0100
Season 27 Historic Trophy - Round 5 - Kyalami

The fifth round of the season takes us south of the Equator and to the well known environs of Kyalami which, translated, is 'Our Home'. Appropriate since as a Papy track we should all feel at home..

There will be full moderation of lap one Red Zone and reported incidents for the rest of the race. Please submit incident reports within a week after the race so that the moderators report may be out before the next race.

You do need to ensure that you have the pit wall in place. The standard Papyrus track has a pit wall but there are patches available that remove it. The absence of a pit wall will not stop you from joining the race but anybody seen by the moderators miraculously driving through the pit wall on the server replay will risk disqualification.

Follow these instructions to restore the wall if you have a mod that has removed it:
METHOD 1:
To place a wall between the pits and the track, rename or remove the kyalami.trk and kyalami.3do files from your kyalami folder.
METHOD 2:
To reinstall the original Papyrus Armco, rename or remove the Armco_s.mip file from your kyalami folder.

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

The race will be run under PRO rules so no resets are allowed.

For THIS RACE, 3 liter cars must be selected

As with Round 4, the leaders are asked to restrict themselves to Group I and Group II

Tristan can use the Group I cars: McLaren M2B or T1G Eagle Weslake.

Doni and Andreas can use a Group II car: BRM P83 or Lotus 43 BRM. Handicaps didn't seem to affect them too adversely and the restrictions stay the same.

Yep - sorry about that guys - it was the ol' cut'n'paste trick. Thanks to Rob for spotting it and to Rainier for putting it right.

Frankly Tris, you could run a 65 and still be competitive so maybe I should put you in a 2L...  ;D

Most 2lt are faster than the McLaren anyway :) . At least around Zandvoort. I once saw a chart Steve Cloyd made, stating every PB in every 66 car. First was BT19, second BT11 2.7 and third BT11 2.5 I think. McLaren was dead last :D .

Fun race - nice and steady and I had a nice three way battle with Andreas and Bernie for a few laps until it ended in tears at T2 - which was sad. Pulled off soon after but not before I got in Iestyn's way - sorry mate, should have let you both past on the straight although I suspect Rob might have got you without my help... got my 1.24 as well so pretty pleased.

Next up the Schottenring <sigh> who picks these tracks....

NB The moderations are well overdue since I have been working weekends but I will catch up before the next race.

Already ran a good time early in quali, in my 4th timed lap or so, and later on just tested the racesetup a bit...noticed already Iestyn improving lap after lap and knew this wouldn't be an easy race...

Iestyn had a better start and took the lead...Tristan was able to stay close first few laps, but when he had a good tow I braked very late and went wide (just behind Iestyn who also went wide), and Tristan went off...

Half the race I was behind Iestyn, his exits were good and especially leading up to the straight out of Leeuwkop Bend...just couldn't pass him, and when I had the chance I was too cautious...everytime he made a little mistake he got the line covered with nowhere to go for me than to check up...

When we were about to lap Paul, Iestyn left his braking too late being distracted I think, went off and I did inherit the lead...first few laps the sound of the BRM H16 got louder, despite me pushing a lot, but pushed a bit more and Iestyn seemed to have a little mishap and then could get the gap bigger towards the end of the race...

Enjoyed the race, especially the first half...some great driving by Iestyn with little preparation, a real natural talent!  8)

Good job Tristan as well in a slower car, and finishers. Commiserations to the retirements, noticed especially the blow up by Doni in the penultimate lap...tough luck m8!

Grats on a fine win, Robert!  Solid, as ever...

A great job by Iestyn to place P2 in the Lotus 43.  How you can pace that monster along at a speed that I could only dream of is the stuff of legend.

Tristan a fine job to bring the torque-less McLaren home a fighting P3.  Well done.

And great to see Tommie in there fighting away also in the McLaren.

From P10 on the grid, I was soon running P7 thanks to the misfortune of others.  Rocket Ronnie's Maser giving up the ghost so early on was a bit of a shocker.  Bad luck indeed there, Ray.

I was holding a gap of around 7-8 seconds back to Paul til I noticed my pit board around Lap10 informing that Dave was now next behind me.  Hmmm...  From largely cruising up to that point, I reckoned that the gap would be surely be coming down rapidly so I upped my pace substantially.  Could I hold him off for another two dozen laps?

No.  The short answer.  It took many laps but finally, Dave could catch my slipstream and at that point, I was easy pickings.  He adroitly passed me on the run into Crowthorne on Lap26.  For the next laps, I attempted to return the favour and even passed him going into Crowthorne on Lap29 but my fears of sliding up into him on the exit kept me low and he rim-rode it to maintain the position.  Swine!

Gathering up my crumbled effort, I was determined to make the pass stick next time and with two laps to go, piled it on as we entered the main straight.  POOF!  The H-16 grenaded and all went silent.  I could hear an engine note coming up from behind so kept well to the left as I approached the Kink.  Robert sifted by to lap me.  I coasted along the pit lane barrier to park it.  TY for the wave, Izzy!  :)

Good driving and a fun time there, Dave!  Grats!

Not a good race this time on my side. :(
Have to say sorry to Bernie because of our "Cometogether" at Turn1. Especially because it was only one more lap to go for the 50% Rule to score some points.  ::)
Hope for a better going in my Hometrack at the Schottenring.

Cheers Doni. Engines don't you just love em. Me so early you so late :'(

Loving THE 50% rule here so much after yet another "pointless" race ::)

Grats to the podium of Robert, Iestyn and Tristan.

Andreas mentions the Schottenring above.  I spent some time there late yesterday and this morning.  What a nightmare!  It has to be one of the most difficult circuits I've ever come across.  Incredibly difficult to learn.  So many corners and combinations look alike through the 10 miles.

Best get in lotsa practice here, chaps.

Good racing with you up to then , I took Tom's advice and put some extra air in my tyres , though I'm sure he meant it for the .bb1set up he sent over in chat , which I promptly lost somewhere in the depths of my GPL folder while trying to paste it into the "players set ups " thingy . Anyway I tried it with the default BT19 setup for the race but for some reason  I couldnt get the tyres to warm up (pribluda showing blue all the time ) though the car seemed to handle OK just had no poke at the top end , while you and Paul where easily able to draught past , I was having problems doing the same to you guys !
With hindsight I could have moved to the grass and given you room but by the time I saw you come in to view it was to late to react. Tried to get round the lap on 3 wheels for a 50% finish but realised I was being a bit silly and parked it before I took one of the fast boys out .
The rumour mongers back in the paddock said it was "all a ploy"  to stop soggy bottoms taking points from those black night reprobates , but I for one don't go with that  ::)

Too bad it finished short , was beginning to enjoy myself  , that's GPL for you though  !

Grats to the podium boys and commiserations to all those whom I did my best to annoy and to those who I failed to impress on  :)

Thanks again to Tom for his help & advice in chat,  much appreciated .

Interesting how things look, because once I span and you and Andreas got past I was feeling that I just couldn't catch you on the straight although I was quicker through the twisty bits... fun while it lasted though. As for the three wheel thing, as long as you don't get in anyone's way and it is the same lap, why not!

Maybe  because my pit man snuck up and let some air out of your tyres on the grid  he! he! he!  ;D

Glad to help Bernie! Here is the setup I tried to send you at race day:

http://www.grandprixlegends.co.nf/files/TvO_GH2_Kya11859_FF_BT19.bb1

I've already pumped up the tires a bit in this setup that I forgot to do when I sent it to you on race day :) . But if you are running really cool tires you could pump them up a bit more. You can see if you've pumped them up too much when the center tire temperature gets higher than the other two in your GPL setup screen, bottom right.

Save it to the address: C:\Sierra\GPL\players\Darwin__Bernie66\setups\kyalami . Now you should be able to see it within GPL. You could also use this setup for other tracks. It will be selectable from your kyalami chapter inside the GPL setup menu.

I was having a good race despite zero practice. I got a great tow in quali from Dave which put me in 5th spot. Start was okay and I slotted in behind Dean in the Fez. Tried to follow him and Tristan in the other McLaren round for a long while but didn't quite have the pace and when I finally lost the tow I was a sitting duck for Arf, who'd followed closely behind the whole race. I then made a mistake and went off, didn't hit anything but lost a good couple of seconds, unfortunate because Dean went off just a couple of corners later! I was just too far back to catch a tow so I just set about trying to slowly push and learn the car and track a bit more. Unfortunately I then made another mistake and ended up a good 8 seconds back of a good scrap for 3rd mid race. At the end of the race my pace got better, and I almost got Arf back had the race been a couple of laps longer. But had some good fun :) .
