Season 27 Friday Trophy - Rounds 25 & 26 - Monza 10K 69Xtra

Welcome to the next round for the Friday Trophy, we stay in Italy. It will take place on the infamous Monza 10K circuit. It’s the traditional Monza track with a banked oval which had been used for Formula 1 until 1961. Much of the race will taken in top gear & there will be plenty of opportunity for drafting.

This seasons tracks will be easy and well known to have a smaller time gap between the lights and heavies,
if there is a too big gap on a track, a stop and go for the lights in the 30min race will be recommended!

This is really designed to be a fun series with 3 different car mods
- running 1 sprint length race of ~15 min and a ~30 min race with the same car.
- ONE SHIFT-R with NO Stop n Go

Light drivers are restricted to not use the big 4: McLaren M7, Brabham BT26a, Lotus 49b, Matra MS80
Heavy drivers will allways have a free car choice!

There was no Maserati V12, no Cooper at Monza 1969.
The last F1 race with a Cooper was Monaco 69  ;)

Better, to take the Matra MS80, it won at Monza 69 !

That is part of the fun! Race something which could've run, but didn't :) . Perhaps owner Colin Crabbe would've run the Cooper had Vic Elford already recovered from his Nürburgring crash in his McLaren M7b. But he didn't so alas, no Cooper.

Did some practice and got down to 2:22.96 in clean air :) . Hope to give some of those Cossies a hard time tonight.

But with this time you are about 3sec slower than the pack... :(

If you want a challenge, use the 49!  ;)

By some car testing I found: I haven't restricted the use of the MS10.... ::)

PS

As I allways use 60fps for my practice sessions, this track shows the benefits of it,
when I switched once to 36fps it was realy an insult to my eyes!!!

Yowser!  I know I'm not quick/good,   but had a brief run around here this afternoon & I'm about 1min slower.  Have a feeling that no Internet setup will help  :(    Although,  I have a feeling I'll also be running around in clean air come the race...!

Cookie, there's only 10 BHP difference in horsepower between the Cooper and the Lotus 49, so I don't think it'll matter much. The V12's will be fast here, so perhaps someone picks a BRM or Ferrari as well. I hope to hang on in the slipstream.

Dave, don't forget to set you wings to zero in the setup! Here is a Matra MS80 setup I got a long time ago:

http://www.grandprixlegends.co.nf/files/TvO_MicMonzaMatraMS80.mu1

Drop it in your player's setup folder, usually C:\Sierra\GPL\players\Curtis69__Dave\setups\monza10k .

It's made by a guy named Michele Sprovieri, he seems to have been part of the 1969 mod team around 2004/5. I just did a 2:19.55 with it :) .

I hope most people won't forget to select a graphics setting for their car with the wings off. Would make it more immersive :) . For the people that don't know about this, go to your Player Info menu. Right at the bottom of the top half of the screen, there is a 'graphics' chapter with a dropdown box. You can chose between a lot of different wing variations, and with most cars, you can also choose to remove the wings completely. ;) .

Tommie.

Calm down Dave, the times here are ~ 2:20, so if Tommie does not use rocket fuel its just a typing error  ;D

My Lotus 49b just did 2:18:09...

It looks like the top 4 + Matra MS10 can do sub-26 at Monza 67.. should we *lights* stick to Ferrari, BRM or worse? Anyway, if not, I don't mind trying out the MS10, or Ferrari, BRM etc. and of course, things may be different once the wings come off ;D.

Edit: I'm always getting those two mixed up.. and occasionally which cars to pick as consequence

Thanks for the tips.   However, when the wings came off - the car started wandering around a bit!
Also thanks for the MS80 setup  - didn't use it in it's entirety as thought I should probably stick with the setup I had already practiced with [with some wing changes];  but did just copy ratios for 4th & 5th.
Anyway, I wimped out & stuck some small winglets back on.  Still crashed out too many times;  apologies again Dean. As mentioned,  I'd already learned in event1 to not clip the flat bit at the bottom of the banking,  so just tried to keep out a bit so as to not do that again.

I guess that makes a pair of wooden spoons for the collection;  another set of salad servers then!

Cheers all & fantastic looking scrap for the podium in race2 - I stayed on to watch that one!

Dave.

Congratulations Axel, Mark, Dean, and Tom!

Thanks for posting the pics Axel! I would have posted the 2nd one myself, had you not done it.

That second heat was intense. I was a little bit aggressive at times while being considerate most of the time. Tom, Axel, and Andreas did about the same. That was some great driving on Tom's part. Andreas drove well too until his late race clip of the pit wall. Axel did great too except for all his spins.

I started practicing with the Ferrari until Axel told me it was too slow. Then I remembered Dean telling me earlier in the season that this might be the only track the 49 might do well. I immediately started setting new sector bests with the 49 so I decided to use it even though my lap times were about identical to the Ferrari. The Lotus was great on the straights and the banking. I could take about any line I wanted on the banking. I got a bit aggressive passing Tom and Andreas entering the banking on the inside. I thought I could run a little faster lap times in the lead than Tom or Andreas. I was also aggressive passing Andreas on the outside exiting the banking. Thanks for letting me have the line Andreas!

The Lotus wasn't very good on cold tires. It wouldn't turn in or brake well. When I went off early in the second heat I yelled, "DARN, I'm at the back again!" That R was actually a M! This time I didn't lose much time so I was able to come back pretty quickly. I needed a little more time working on the setup too. I was horrible under braking and through Curva Grande, Lesmos, and Parabolica. 1% more rear BB, more coast side diff locking, and some changes to the toe-in might help a lot through those turns. 1 degree of wing might help too.

After I took the lead from Tom, he and Andreas fell back a little fighting for position. At that point I really wished I had my qualifying gearing. I thought I might have been able to break the slipstream. I definitely wasn't geared for leading the race. In the slipstream I actually could have stood a bit longer gear. Every once in a while the engine wouldn't turn any faster at the end of the straights even though the slipstream should have let me keep accelerating.

Now I got my revenge on Axel too after my last lap meltdown in the F2's at Enna. :) I thought I'd come up a little short but all the slipstreaming and side-by-side racing that Tom and I did, had me in good shape for where I could and couldn't pass.

That was a lot of fun and likely the best race I've driven online yet. I'm very impressed with what a fine job Tom did. He kept the pressure on me almost constantly and stayed so close at times that I surprised we never collided. I doubt I could have followed him so closely.

That's a pretty good replay to watch too! I enjoyed it so much the first time that I soon watched it a second time.

Thanks guys. I appreciate you letting me race with you!

Congrats to Axel and Greg for their wins.  I had no idea that Mclaren could do those kind of speeds!  Sorry to Axel for the bump in race 2, I got caught out under braking.
Whew, Monza's always a show isn't it  :)

NP Mark, I was surprised that the car had all 4wheels and only minor damages....
I had to be slow into corners and brake very early, what caught Mark and Andreas out ;)

It's maybe a bug in the car model or just the best CW (it is the narrowest car) what makes this Kiwi such fast  ;D
It took all my experience to get an acceptable handling but the speed difference on the S+F straight was incredible.  :scooter:

Have a look at the GPLRA "Race History Graph" :o

Looking forward to the GT's entering the 2nd banking with 340kph with an 1100kg :tank: this will be great FUN    :punk:

Good fun at a track where the old cars actually have a fighting chance. I tried the Cooper since I figured it would be the fastest non-Cossie, non-winged car out there, but I was soon proven wrong by Iestyn, who proved the old '67 pecking order is still in effect for the 69's, when he ran the Brabham BT24 Repco. Either way, I got the Cooper handling really good so stuck with it for the races.

First race I was surprised to be able to make my way to the front rather quickly, and even managed to lead a lap! When Axel finally caught up and got past he was too fast for me to follow, even with the additional draft provided by others. In the final oval turn it was Iestyn who had made up the gap and tried to pass me round the outside, and he would have succeeded had it not been for his connection going haywire and some of the worst lag contact I'd ever seen. Tough break Iestyn! You got that Brabham running pretty good! So I ended up a slightly undeserved 4th just behind the top guns in their winged cars.

In the second heat I had to start even farther back as I was unable to get a draft in quali, but surprisingly made my way to the front rather quickly once again, until I ended up fighting with Greg for the win! Cookie was close all the time, catching up, then losing out again due to mishaps, but entering the final lap it was me and Greg fighting for the lead still. I tried to pressurize him into making a mistake, and we went side by side though both Lesmo's, but the grunt of the Cossie soon took over and Greg stayed in the lead entering Ascari. When we arrived at the Parabolica Cookie had already catched up in the mighty McLaren, and before entering the banking he'd already passed Greg as well. It was impossible to keep up with Axel even in the slipstream, but I was able to stay close and watch a fine battle for the win between Axel and Greg! Great stuff! Grats Greg! I was glad to bring the good old Cooper home in 3rd. Contrary to what is shown in the team info screen, the car is not a 1968 T86B, but the 1967 T86, so it was cool to bring it to the podium :)
