Title: UKGPL Season 27 (2014) Historic Trophy (66) - Schottenring - Oct 21
Post by: BadBlood on October 18, 2014, 10:21:03 AM +0100
Season 27 Historic Trophy - Round 6 - Schottenring

The second half of the season finds us in Hesse in Germany to sample the delights of one of the oldest German Tracks.

Schottenring was inaugurated on 22 July 1925 and I cannot do better than re-quote the description from the last race here:

"Schottenring. It is long, it is tough, lots of fast corners with one or two that can trip you up if you are not careful.
There is a lot to remember so you will need to put some praccy in for this one if you don't want to end up in the trees."

There will be full moderation of lap one Red Zone and reported incidents for the rest of the race. Please submit incident reports within a week after the race so that the moderators report may be out before the next race.

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

The race will be run under PRO rules so no resets are allowed.

For THIS RACE, 2 liter cars must be selected

As with Round 5, the leaders are asked to restrict themselves to Group I and Group II

Tristan can use the Group I cars: Lotus 33 Climax or T1F Eagle Weslake.

Doni and Robert can also have the choice of a Group II car: Lotus 33 BRM or BT11 2.5Lt. Andreas has free choice as he has dropped out of the top three.

Handicapping could well make a difference here but so far it does not seem to affect the leaders too adversely and the restrictions stay the same. The last time the 66s were here a Lotus 33 Climax actually won and only two drivers managed 9 laps!

Schottenring 66, two days after Dundrod F2 ...not an easy begin of week  :-\

A great preparation for the GT's at Monza10k...  ;D

Dundrod is way easier than Schottenring, once you have learned it ;)

Having to skip this race as I have run out of time preparing for it, and want to avoid an episode like yesterday's Dundrod race. Haven't ran or attempted a lap yet at this track...

Have a good race and see you at Spa! :)

Points are secondary to me. Want to have fun racing and doing my best. But without track knowledge I will be a danger and prolly not make Lap 1.

No disrespect to you or other drivers, nor am I giving up. I apologize for not being there...just too many online races with tracks I didn't know, plus some real life issues...will make all other 66 races ;)

Take care, it's always fun racing with you :)

Actually, quite pleased with my practice lap of 6.27 with only two spins  ;D Lap record on my machine is Hristo on 5m17s so I might only end up a lap or so down! Progress!!!  :D

Tristan has, apparently, been driving the wrong track.  '...quick to learn.' is the giveaway.

After Tristan's post I got curious about the track. First few laps were difficult, but now I've got kind of the hang of it spending most afternoon doing laps. For a longer track it's kind of "easy" to learn as it's so fast I guess. Actually it's a blast!  8)

So, count me in and who knows what happens!  ;D

Did better my DNS - just - lol. Big respect to you lot. Really ought to have worked harder on a driveable setup. Difficult to avoid the trees whilst driving a bar of soap...

Had a lapse already after a few turns, forgot to lift and to turn in...really sorry to the car that hit me...my suspension was too bent to continue...can't believe I did that...

Another major blow to my confidence...  ::)

Hope you had a good one ;)

Was just getting the hang of it, when I forgot the last esses/approached faster than ever and subsequently lost 3 tyres.... was so close to a sub-5:25, and then chasing down Axel & Dean for 2nd, with Ray pressuring from behind!

Edit: Grats points finishers!

i have to confess that this is NOT one of my favourite circuits. Just one of those tracks where I cannot usually get a smooth ride.

It all started very badly in qually as the setup I had dragged in from the archives must have been planted there by a saboteur!!  It was a nightmare to drive and I failed to finish the first 5 "out laps". I even got black flagged by GPL for driving the wrong way ON THE GRASS!!!

With about 15 mins to go I made some micro-fine adjustments with a scaffold tube and a large log.

As a result I started almost last with what was an untried setup.  :-\

The first lap was very careful as I got the feel of the car, which actually was a great improvement and I was able to increase my pace slowly.

I knew from past races that there was likely to be a high rate of attrition, so survival was my 1st priority  ;). I picked up places as those ahead crashed out and when i caught a car I waited for a clear chance before risking anything. ( I think Doni allowed me to pass?? ).
David Rainier defended well for a couple of laps, but when he ran wide I took the chance and set off after Andreas. Slowly I was closing the gap, but once I had caught him getting past proved a real problem. He was driving defensively and had the extra grunt in the Brabham 2.7 out of the corners.
I seemed to be better on the brakes in a few places but I would need to be close to make a clear attempt. That chance came as we approached the cobbled section with the Karussel. I picked up the slipstream on the fast downhill and moved to the inside for braking and waited for Andreas to blink first  ::). I was just beginning to wonder if he would ever brake when he did and I was able to take the inside through the corner and 3rd spot.
By this time Tris was literally miles in front and so was Dean, so it looked like 3rd was all I would get , if I could keep it clean for the last 4 laps. Then Dean vanished and I was in 2nd with 2 laps to go  ;D.
Almost made a couple of dumb errors on the last laps as concentration wandered, but draged the little Brab BRM home for a very satisfying 2nd spot.

Grats to all those who made the finish. I think this was my first finish here in about 6 races!!

Hi guys :)

....was a good funy race for me, even if I was alone ahead, this track is exellent for this 66 mod....long curves flat out......hard bracking......blind corners.....no mutch place for a mistake .....  pur plaisir ! ;D....
....pb in qualifs, the eagle here is perfect !.....Prib show me a 5.17.30 in cumul .....I try to go sub 5.18.xx in my last lap of the race but I was not perfect ....and maybe the 10 liters rest in my tank don't help me but never mind...next time maybe ;)

.....well done podium and survivors ......see you all in Spa where it will be another storie ...... ;D

After a minor road block in the form of Robert, tough break mate, I had some great racing with those around me, thanks.

Having fought my way back to second the trouble and strife said good night to me and I turned to say goodnight to her. Mistake!!!!! I turned back and immediately said goodnight to the race.

Grats to Tristan, Clive and Andreas.

Splendid drive, Tristan!  Full marks all 'round.

Good drive up thru the field, Evil.  And yes, I did ease off to let you by after MoufanKurve.  No point in holding up another Moose.  (Actually, I'd breathed the throttle on the straight-ish bits leading up to that tight leftie to let you by but you didn't get the message.  You got awfully close to butt-kissing me there!  :))

Good run for Andreas and fully deserved to finish ahead of me.

Far too many shunts and retirements here.  Very sorry to see so many who were light-years faster run into trouble.  My game plan was to just keep it on the island and monitor developments.  To finish P4 was a real plus.  And not that my petticoats were spotless, either.  A Lap08 spin and biff off a guardrail had me on my knees, hands clasped.  That didn't even register in GPLRA's Mechanical Report.  Strange.

Deaner gets the prize for the most spectacular shunt.  Haven't seen a car pruned of all four corners in ages.

Made me chuckle... kids have been taught NOT to talk to Daddy while he is racing but it took a lot of crashes and swearing to get there.

Congrats Tristan, great speed and pace, also grats Clive and Andreas for podium! Also well done Doni and "finishers"...also commiserations to the retirements, apart from myself...it's way more important to run solid, consistent and finish than to be fast...

Was so angry with myself I drove a sub5m18s in training for what it's worth...lesson learnt hopefully...too many Lap 1 shunts by me this season...hope to be back on form next races...

Glad you could continue Ray, I hate to see others suffer from my mistakes ;)

LOL Ray and Paul!  ;D

Hehe, I think you are mistaken.  :) My "Brabham 2.7" was a little Lotus 33 with only some big wheels on it.  ;)
Anyway Grats to all Finishers!

Having to skip this race as I have run out of time preparing for it

Rob, you could use qualifying for practice and then DQ yourself by running the car on the side of the track in the wrong direction. Then starting from the back you can get more practice during the race.

I learned that last season in the 66's. I got enough practice to run a decent lap time as Spa and the Ring but not enough time to race competently. My lack of experience with the 66's and just enough practice to be dangerous didn't go well at all. I was rather ashamed of the carnage I caused in both of those races. :( So the next time I tried at Mexico, I started from the back and was very cautious the 1st lap. I still had a difficult time on lap 1 but I succeeded in not wrecking anybody and finished in a decent position.
