Title: UKGTL Season 15 Lotus -v- TVR - Castle Combe - Jul 20
Post by: Wiltshire Tony on November 02, 2014, 01:11:15 PM +0000
Championship Standings here (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=459&theme=5)

Grid/server capacity: 28

Practice: ~19:20 (60 mins)
Qualifying: 20:20 (10 mins)
Race 1: 20:30 (18 laps)

Practice (Car change): ~20:50 (10 mins)
Qualifying: 21:00 (10 mins)
Race 2: 21:10 (18 laps)

Track: Castle Combe (Classic) Download this (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=3358.msg54520#post_castlecombe)

Cars allowed: Lotus Elan, TVR Griffith 400. (Drivers must change makes for Race 2).

Time of Day Setting: 14:00
Start: STANDING
Tyre wear: Normal
Fuel consumption: Normal
Pit stops: Not required

Server: simracing.org.uk Monday
Password: see above (#post_event_password)

Notes:
(1) It's best if all drivers can make sure they are connected before the Qualifying session as drivers on track during qualifying will not see cars that join after they are on track until they go back to the garage.
(2) Please make sure you are fully aware of the SimRacing.org.uk Rules.
(3) The AI control should be turned off so that you have control of the car at all times, including pitting. Your player file should therefore read
Autopit="0"
Force Autopit Off="1" // Forces autopit always off
No AI Control="1" // AI never has control over car
If you still finding pitting problematic, experience tells us that its less to do with positioning and more to do with approach speed. A slow approach to pit crew chief has proved most reliable.

Special Notes: Note early race start time! Drivers shall not change cars during qualifying. Pole sitter may have trouble seeing the start lights. Suggest they have the countdown switched on.

What an excellent track choice for the TVR/Lotus Challenge :thumbup1: A real drivers circuit with some corners reminiscent of Goodwood, and again a new track for me to learn. Initial setups are giving me low 1:07's with race fuel in the TVR but am hoping I can shed 0.5 or more somewhere along the way.

For those new to Castle Combe here is an instructional video on how to take Quarry Corner correctly.... ::)

Lotus Cortina #46 is a Dan Cox, mate of mine and he has this corner nailed in this car, but watch out for the Austin A40 (#45) towards the rear of the field. That is his dad and he is in his 70's!!!

Yes it is like having a bigger battery of stamina. Been looking at Raceroom.  Sorted out the basics in the week prior to my IoW Tour and been buying cars and tracks and spent time going round Brands Indy in an assortment of cars.  Looks and goes very good.

My best times in either car are in the 1:08's with the Lotus being a little quicker. Tough track if you don't hit a perfect line at the key turns.

Nicely balanced car set, Tony :thumbup1: I'm about half a second quicker in the TVR, but it's easier to string a good lap together in the Lotus. Should be fun.

That's what I need but it's not in the readme or in the tracks .gdb file. If someone is able to set up a race in offline mode and slide the No. of cars slider all the way to the right and tell me the number that would be great.

As Castle Combe is only about 15 miles from where I live I felt that I should uphold local honour here!  ;D

But, I was totally outclassed in race 1 when John and Jose were awesomely quick, and in Race 2 Flash and Hayman along with Jose were setting some serious pacein the early laps.

I might have disgraced myself on the rear of Matts TVR??  ??? I'm not sure if I nudged you Matt, as I felt nothing in my Elan, but the way that your TVR screwed around out of Camp Corner has me worried. Put in a report and I will wear the sackcloth and ashes for a few weeks if I am guilty.

Erling more than matched me for pace during the race and I was lucky to keep ahead of him over the line. Great dice between our Elans mate  ;D

Maybe I have 2 x 3rd spots....(maybe not if I did indeed push Matt's TVR.)

Well those were two very different races.

Race 1, I was beaten off the line by Jose. Managed to sneak up the inside at Quarry and held on to the lead without any dramas until the end.

Race 2, I couldn’t hear the little Lotus at the start with all the noise from the TVRs, consequently lost it shifting up to second and pirouetted gracefully onto the grass ;D Watched the whole field go past before re-joining at the back. Started making up places, but then got collected by a sideways TVR (Bill?) and picked up some damage. The car was a bit wonky after that, but not too bad. Managed fifth at the flag, but would like to have had another lap to have a go at the battling pair of Clive & Erling. Good fun though.

That was a nice track for both cars.

Qualified 4th in the first race and held that position after the start.  Tried unsuccessfully to keep up with the lead group, but then Clive spun (at Old Paddock Bend ?), handing me 3rd.

Tried to make the most of the 7-sec gap back to him, but after a few laps it became clear he was catching me. Screwed up at Quarry, almost spinning, but just recovering by nearly coming to a standstill. Handed him 5 secs for free that way.  When he was right behind me, I was unsure if he would attempt a move up the inside at Folly, and thus missed my 'tuck in' point.  You could get away with that in the Elan, but not the TVR. I thus ran wide onto the grass, making it all too easy for Clive to pass.  Couldn't quite match his pace and had to settle for 4th.  Do wish I hadn't lost the 5 secs at Quarry, as he was only 3 secs ahead at the finish..  ;)

Race 2 I was somewhat down the field.  Ahead, Matt & Clive were battling.  Kept cheering for Matt to keep at him, whenever it looked like Clive was about to get away - I really needed them to slow each other down..  ;)   Happened when they touched - Matt spun off, Clive lost momentum, and I sailed past.  That was the start of a very close duel with Clive, that lasted to the finish.  More equal than the TVR battle of race 1, we swapped places 4 times.  Regrettably, Clive was in front when the race ended..   Could conceivably have passed him on the last lap, if I had played my cards differently.  He lost speed at Old Paddock Bend, but I was too close to steer around his car and had to slow down myself. :censored:

Grats to the podium though, and welcome to the new faces - nice with such a large grid

Cheers,
Erling

Really enjoyed those two races and for once it seemed like I had a setup that worked well. In both races I managed to pull away with the lead group, like some sought of poor relation, hanging on looking for scraps. In the first race Flash appeared to be using an illegal nitrous device because he just roared through the field, he was taking seconds out of my lead every lap, awesome. In the second race I was just close enough to see Clive and Erlings battle but too far away to join in. I really should watch the replays as I'm sure I had some good racing with others but my memory sucks.
Next one is at Goodwood, possibly my favourite circuit of them all; It's the track I choose to test GTL content for future seasons. Hope we get a nice fat grid like last night's.

Thanks for being so understanding Matt. I did wonder if your exit at Camp might have involved some extra assistance, which is why I fessed up.  :(

For me the TVR was almost 0.5secs a lap faster than the Elan, but required far more concentration to avoid lighting up the rear tyres and spinning. To be honest I had problems with Old Paddock bend from the very first practice lap, I think I only got that right about 3 times over both races!! Thus it was that Erling could take huge chunks out of any lead I had on every lap through there!!

I had Avon Rise and Quarry pretty much nailed on a clear track, but picking the apex when you cannot see past the car in front is a leap of faith and once or twice things got a bit near to total catastrophe there  ::).

Once I had regained 3rd place  from Erling in Race 1 I was only ever going to advance if John or Jose screwed up, so it was a gap managing exercise to the flag.
Race 2 was much more entertaining as Erling has already reported and I thought it was awfully decent of him to wait for me at Quarry bend so that we could have fun  ;) I was quicker at some points and Erling faster through others ( especially Old Paddock!!), which balanced our lap times pretty evenly. I was fortunate enough to be in the lead when it mattered to take 3rd spot.

Yes it was me, saw you catching me and tried to get out of your way but lost it and collected you in the process.  Apologies for ruining your race.

Also sorry to Roger, I could see you were faster than me and tried to stay on the racing line but you were not in fov and two into one won't go.

Other than that I set new PBs in both races but the TVR was fighting me all night and kept getting away from me.

No problem at all, the TVR is a beast to handle at the best of times!

Here are mine:

The brake pressure is probably a bit high on the Elan, I kept locking the fronts if I wasn't careful.

Sorry to miss this one. I was looking forward to Castle Combe and was halfway towards a respectable time in practice. Unfortunately I either ate something very disagreeable or hosted a nasty inconvenient bug. It resulted in me having to cancel all activities for the day.

If I can get home in time next Monday I will look forward to joining all.
