Title: UKGPL Season 27 (2014) Historic Trophy (66) - Spa - Nov 4
Post by: BadBlood on November 02, 2014, 04:34:26 PM +0000
Season 27 Historic Trophy - Round 7 - Spa

The seventh race finds us in Spa. Classic. No more needs to be said but I will anyway.

The original triangular shaped course, which was designed in 1920 by Jules de Their and Henri Langlois Van Ophem, used public roads between the towns of Spa, Malmedy and Stavelot.  The course was extremly fast and was made even faster in 1939 with the introduction of the famous Eau Rouge section.  The circuit was completely revised and shortened for the 1981 Belgian Grand Prix but it is the faster 8.761 mile version of the track that we will use for this race.

The 8.761 mile version of the circuit was used between 1946 and 1970 and whilst corners like Eau Rouge, Burnenville and particularly Masta; presented the drivers with exceptional challenges the circuit was very dangerous and claimed the lives of many drivers.

There will be full moderation of lap one Red Zone and reported incidents for the rest of the race. Please submit incident reports within a week after the race so that the moderators report may be out before the next race.

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

The race will be run under PRO rules so no resets are allowed.

For THIS RACE, 3 liter cars must be selected

As with Round 6, the leaders are asked to restrict themselves to Group I and Group II. I have included Robert in the leadership list as the gap is not too great.

Tristan can use the Group I cars: McLaren M2B Ford or T1G Eagle Weslake.

Doni, Robert and Andrea can also have the choice of a Group II car: Lotus 43 BRM or BRM P83.

Handicapping could well make a difference here but so far it does not seem to affect the leaders too adversely and the restrictions stay the same. Could make a difference here though.

Getting old now, another Lap 1 shunt. Misjudged the tow effect and my speed; went too hot into Stavelot, went wide and spun. Massive apologies to Clive, should have reversed, but was kind of paralyzed...tried to continue, but car wouldn't go right anymore and had to park it...

Well. Set out in hope but I just didn't have enough time to find a setup. Couldn't get the car to turn in and that cost me a wheel second time though Malmedy. Passed Robert though #superstar

#NOT!

Thanks to Jethro for helping me out.

Unlucky Rob, I did the same there trying to chase down Ivan in oAo :'(.. Tris too, unlucky for the engine blow.. I saw on GPLrank that you took it out on Monza, with a great Eagle PB! Beats mine by 0.02! :o

This made the race less complicated for me, but it could have been a great battle with Rob, Greg and Tommie who were coming up from behind. Maybe next time? :P

Still, I made a little error on the penultimate lap, which stopped me breaking 150 mph for the race.. though at one point, it looked like Greg might haul me in before the end, which spurred me on to a race PB. :)

Good job finishers, nice to see some close battles throughout the field 8)

If you can't win, go for points. If you'd maintained the 3:31s, in conjunction with my errors trying to catch and then stay ahead of Greg, you would have been well placed to fight over 4th with Ronnie and me at the end. Even a 6th place would have pretty much put a lock on the season for you.

Good fight with Ronnie both early on and at the close of the final lap. It wasn't a completely serious passing attempt in Blanchimont, but I thought, "just keep the pressure on and maybe something will happen". And it did.  ;D

Lets say best of the rest..looking at laptimes. Got caught behind Tommie who had an unlucky start.  Weird how fast ppl were  many of them qualing behind me. I was quickly caught by greg who started last for some reason. Couldn t even follow him. Anyway I caught Geberhardt and we had a long fight for 6 th that I eventually won. When I thought I was safe I started daydreaming into stavelot and what? why do I have pedal to the metal in 5 th? . Span trying to slow down but luckily car was ok..Then a long chase for Geberhardt started and we were cat and mouse unutil two laps to go where I somehow got a small gap. took a slow safe lastlap to get my 6 th.

Congratulations Iestyn and Tom! Nice job.

That was fun. I gained some valuable experience but I still need a lot of work in the 66s. I gained some confidence with the car while practicing but I'm not still not comfortable with it in traffic.

I was quickly caught by greg who started last for some reason.

I DQed myself as soon as I got on the server and used qualifying to test my race setup. I lack experience driving these cars. I wrecked twice last season in them causing a lot of chaos. I was rather ashamed of myself to be causing other drivers who might be in a championship battle such trouble. I also thought, this is the kind of crap that might get me banned. I probably should have started at the back last week at Silverstone. I still need more practice with the 65s and 66s.

I had a chance to catch Iestyn at one point but I choked at a terrible time. Tommie kept me busy for a while and Dean had me worried some. It looked like I had finally broke the slipstream and was going to get away from Tommie when I ran wide at Blanchimont. At that point, it looked like another lap or two and I'd be in Iestyn's slipstream. It would have been fun looking for any place Iestyn might be weak and trying to pull off a last lap pass.

It looked like Tommie was having a lot fun. He sure did a good job of ruining my focus. At one point I was hoping you would cooperate a little more with me and back off some at the end of the faster straights. I thought I could pull both of us up to Iestyn. I was losing time behind you but I wasn't fast enough to get away from you when I led except for once. It was some good racing though. My apologies for the late spin at Les Combes. I accidentally downshifted to 1st which put me in a spin. I was very relieved when you were able to avoid contact. I'm lucky Tommie appeared to be prepared to stop if necessary. I would have hated to have wrecked you. That gave Dean a chance to finish 3rd but he made it easy on me with his spin at the Kink. Had Dean not spun, it was setting up to be a very close finish.

Thanks guys, I appreciate you letting me race again.

No worries Robert, that was a racing incident as far as I am concerned. It is always difficult to know if you should stay still or move when you have 10 cars hurtling towards you :scared: I almost squeezed past but I just could not get the car to tighten the line.

Grats to Iestyn on a dominant win and some stunning lap times. I opted for the 3ltr Brab as I have rarely driven it and wondered how it would perform at Spa. Surprised at how stable and controllable it was during qually and felt that with a little bit of slipstream and few laps more it might have been good for a few points.

Congrats to Iestyn on a fine victory!  Great drive, amigo.

Good to see old bud Tommie score a most worthy P2!  Ripping stuff!

And Greg!  MUMMA MIA!  Up from the back of the grid to score a podium.  Gotta be very satisfying.  Well done.

Grieved to see that both Robert and Clive were early fallers.  I'd noted the shunt in Stavelot on Lap01 but had no idea whom was involved.  Bad luck, gys.

The DOHC Indy Ford in Tris' McLaren cried 'ENOUGH' far too soon.  It would have been fun to see how he'd make out over a longer stretch.  Still miles ahead in the standings.

I ran off from a very conservative start to just put in miles over the first half of the race and avoid trouble.  I have to say that this was very nerve-wracking as with cars immediately ahead and behind, I viewed each as potential disaster.

Affairs crystallized fairly soon after the start and it seemed that Bernie, Dave and I were forming up into a nice little trio.  They each put me in their mirrors early on and I was happy to just watch the give & take between them from a second or so back.  I wasn't going to do anything in the way of risking contact til we reached 50% race distance.  All I wanted to do was stay close.  I must say that both BD and DR were driving very well and must have been enjoying things enormously.  Many were the laps where they exchanged positions multiple times over the course of the eight miles.

With my pitboard giving me seven laps to run, that was the signal for me to up the pace and to start making a bid for positions.  From breathing the throttle on the Masta to keep the revs in check in the slipstream, I now felt it was time to use it to my advantage and closed.  Saw something on the order of 192-93 mph on the run into the Kink.  That's about 9-10 mph up on a solo pass.  Cool!

On the climb out of La Carriére on Lap08, I just edged by Bernie's Brabham to move up to P9.  Dave was just ahead in the Cooper.  Lap09, I skipped
by Dave on the run into the Kink with Bernie only metres behind.  I knew full well it was going to be well nigh impossible to stage a breakaway but I pushed on to make the best of the lead of the trio.

Lap10 and Dave returned the favour with a carbon-copy of my pass on him on the Masta.  Sadly, it seems that Bernie, just behind me now, went into the Kink very slightly off line and clipped the rail on the right.  A lurid spin meant lost contact with the group but he was able to continue.  A
special mention for Billy here.  The trio mentioned thus far was next to a quartet at times as Billy ran very well indeed to be just off my tail for many a lap.  Indeed, at the end of Lap03, he was less than a second behind me.  A slide through Malmedy and a brush with the hedge on Lap05 delayed Billy long enough that he lost the slipstream and fell back.  Bad luck but a noteworthy drive nonetheless and in fact, he did not finish that far behind Bernie at race's end.

Lap11 and I re-passed Dave on the Masta.  Still running in lock-step.  My advantage was short-lived.  Dave passed again on the hill approaching the notorious Blanchimont.  A fine battle!  :)

I was particularly pleased thus far with my braking performance into La Source.  At best a tricky deal, I found that I was getting excellent and consistent retardation there.

Lap12 and with Dave just metres ahead on the climb out of La Carriére, I noted a slight slowing of his Cooper.  Then...  KAPOW!  Bits of Maser V-12 and Duckhams oil wafted over my Lotus.  Engine kaput.  Bad luck indeed there, Dave, but do have some consolation in staging a fine race up to that misfortune.

Safe in P8 now with quite some time in hand over Bernie, I started to cruise it in and came close to dropping the ball on Lap13.  Going through Malmedy, I was too close to the right-hand verge and it caught me.  The Lotus was pulled off to the right and skipped through the hedge.  Thought I was a goner for sure!  I fully expected the hedge to spit me into a spin with Bernie not all that far behind to come roaring over the crest and drill me in a classic T-bone.  Luckily, the Lotus came out of the hedge pointed in the right direction but I was crawling at a snail's pace.  I cursed my unforced error and pedaled it back up to speed as quickly as possible, watching my mirrors intently, fully expecting to see the green Brabham closing rapidly.  That didn't happen as Bernie was further delayed and I held on to make it home with thanks to the gods for sparing me a disaster.

Off to Austria next on the super-fast Zeltweg course.  Tris leads the standings comfortably with myself in P2 and Andreas back a bit in P3.  Andreas' excellent drive in the Lotus43 here shaved a couple of points off his deficit.

The fat lady is warming up in the wings!  :)

Insightful race report from Doni. I was disappointed to make a small error on lap 5 & drop back from the pack.

I’m still experimenting with the 66 Mod trying to find good set up & driving style. I thought I’d made some progress at Kyalami, but firmly at the back of the grid again at Spa.

This is the only series I’m running on Pro settings so the mantra, perfectly well described by an old Queen song, is “Keep Yourself Alive”.  Taber & Rainier started behind me so I allowed them plenty of space to get past.  Was quite happy to latch onto the Doni / Bernie/ Rainier group for a few laps until my brush with the hedge. After that I was dropping back steadily. Late in the race Prib told be Bernie had lost time – the gap was down to 500 yards which I managed to whittle down to touching distance by the finish line. With the various retirements it was a top 10 finish (out of 10 finishers).

Look forward to resuming the battle at Spa with Bernie next week in the 65s.

Great race with Doni and David going 2 abreast into Masta and swapping places 5 or 6 times per lap but always with respect for each other , close stuff at times but no barging match just good clean racing

Had a few scrapes with the grim reaper a time or two notably around lap 5 when David began warping badly ,at one point he disappeared completely as I passed him going through Eau Rouge only to re appear in front of me halfway down the straight ! thought my race would end soon after this , seeing the latency bar hit the roof , but fortunately it settled down for most of the remaining laps . Had a few brushes with the straw bales outbraking myself into the hairpin but the bad move was my own doing , following Doni into Masta I got caught out by the tow,  had to lift suddenly to avoid contact with his rear end , making my rear end go light and lost control , was very fortunate to be able to carry on after a harmless spin though it did throw the contents of my pie dispenser all over the cockpit floor .

Sorry to see Billy drop behind , perhaps we should all wait for him to catch up in the next 65's Spa race  :D

Billy my Tom Van Driver Brabby set up was fast and stable ( danke veil mate ) your welcome to try it if you like , though the motor seemed to lack top end grunt here , perhaps the car or the gear ratios , not sure which , but I was wishing I had a V12 behind me on those long straights.

Thanks for a great race
congrats to the podium chaps
