Season 27 Friday Trophy - Rounds 33 & 34 - Moon - Sports Cars

Welcome to the Sports Car round for the Friday Trophy, we do our longest trip to the Moon.
A nice smooth track with some great racing expected.

This seasons tracks will be easy and well known to have a smaller time gap between the lights and heavies,
if there is a too big gap on a track, a stop and go for the lights in the 30min race will be recommended!

This is really designed to be a fun series with 3 different car mods
- running 1 sprint length race of ~15 min and a ~30 min race with the same car.
- ONE SHIFT-R with NO Stop n Go

Light drivers are restricted to use a Ford GT40 MK1 or a Porsche 910   ;D
Heavy drivers will allways have a free car choice!

"Light drivers are restricted to use a Ford GT40 MK1 or a Porsche 910"

Interesting. Will this bring the Heavies closer to the Lights? I wouldn't mind.

A personal triumph,  got 2 secs of previous PB in race 1.   In race 2,  managed to get 2 laps off!

Probably should have taken the Porsche [didn't even try it here].    I find it's the only car that doesn't crash itself at every opportunity.
However, whenever I've previously used it I've been naturally slow on the corners & then absolutely left behind on any straight bit too.

I find the CanAms easier;  although I'll see later in the week...

Cheers,
Dave.

I have seen other rules being broken, David.  Unless more drivers take an interest in this, it will continue to get worse. :-\

Great results for me!  The moon is such an aggressive track, and the Porsche has to be driven aggressively in order to get any speed out of it, so it all lines up.  I was really surprised in race 2 over how strong the slipstream is for these cars - even after I made a mistake and went off I was chasing after Greg and you could really feel that extra pull in every part of the track.  I closed in slowly but he had a spin at turn 2 so I got the lead back.  Dunno what happened at the end- my lap counter went from 2 laps to go, to suddenly 0.  But Greg wasn't stopping so neither was I  ;D

A moderator breaking the rules should not be tolerated in a forum!

So I declare my withdrawal to the end of this season.

I have the answer.  Everyone gets to change 3 rules they don't like, but you must name them before the Season starts. ;D

Great drives Mark! You seem to be driving great the past few weeks.

I keep making stupid mistakes lately and I've lost my consistency. My spin in T2 was a futile effort to try to break the slipstream. I kept going after the race because I had enough fuel for another lap or two. I was warmed up and ready to take some chances to see if I could get into the 11's. Sometimes I like to run and extra lap or two. I've set a few of my best laps after the race that never get recorded. I did manage a 12.07 after the race. I'm a little disappointed I couldn't get into the 11's with or without a tow. I had 11.7* showing for an ideal lap at one time without the benefit of any slipstreaming.

I've quit looking at the laps remaining and started watching the laps completed instead. I get less confused that way.

So I declare my withdrawal to the end of this season.

Shouldn't that say, "So I declare my withdrawal in two weeks"? :)

Thanks guys.

I did see that you carried on for a bit, Mark, with Greg on your tail..  ;D

So I declare my withdrawal to the end of this season.

What?  No way - look back at the start of the season we all agreed you could actually change cars between race 1 and race 2 if you wanted.  It's fine, forget about it.

I think this is about more than just an unnecessary rule being broken Mark.  Number of racers at this event - 7 and sixpence.  Why? When you continue to run similar tracks all season, you will end up with drivers who prefer these tracks.  You get good racing, but fewer cars.

Bigger problem from where I sit, is a guy who moans about driving a car 2 seconds slower, despite it being faster than any other Mod. Along with the Moderator who listens, and kills off the brave few Heavies who enjoyed the challenge.  So now you have a sinking ship.

If Crystal Palace happens, I hope to be there.

Oh no, I've started quoting myself. Oops, I was thinking the next race was the end of the season. Crystal Palace isn't listed on the championship page, but it is listed on the registration page. So, I hope you delay your withdrawal for about 6 weeks instead of 2. It's a shame that 2 or 3 weeks ago I gave up any hope of catching Axel or Mark in the championship not knowing that Crystal Palace remained.

we all agreed you could actually change cars between race 1 and race 2 if you wanted.  It's fine, forget about it.

 I never agreed with that. I never changed cars between heats. Since it's supposed to be a fun series I've never been concerned that others did though.

I am a little concerned that the Lights have had too fast a car for the Heavies. The only reason I quit driving the Lotus 49 was because Axel and Mark had too much of an advantage with the Lotus 63 or MS84. Same with the Shadow. It's the main reason I didn't drive the 712.

If you limit the lights to wingless cars in 69X, GT40 Mark 1 and 910 in the GTs, and 917 and 712 in the Can Ams, would it bring back more Heavies or would it only reduce the number of Light drivers?

Better to change cars between heats, than bring the wrong class of car entirely

I think I swapped cars a few races back and no one batted an eyelid? ??? (or noticed, heh :P)

As it's a fun series at the end of the day, I think it only adds fun to try both cars in either race, or to have the option to - it keeps things fresh. I had as much fun battling Dave for last place at Imola, as with the other lights for a win.. so I would agree with Greg's statement on making sure the heavies can compete, with a choice of all the faster cars. Although, that said, I enjoy driving the easier to handle Porsches! At other times, I'll just drive whatever I have a setup for. ;D

But, I do hope that constriction of car choices wouldn't limit the number of lights? Is this what opened up car choices previously? As I see it, if we can entice a few more heavies, or make them more competitive, then that only improves things further. We're running out of heavies at the moment :o

Are there slower cars in Sport Cars mod?

As moderator I try to find a balance, not too much restrictions for lights and keep the fastest or easiest to drive cars for the heavies.

The wingless 69X are IMO relics of the 67 season and do not represent the 69 season.

Perhaps the balance can be looked at again, seeing less Lights participating and no Heavies at all :) .

Good point Axel, I thought about that after I wrote what I did. That's why I jumped at the chance to drive the BRM at Enna. It was my first opportunity to drive in ukgpl, what we'd call a "conventional" car for the 69 season.
