Season 27 Friday Trophy - Rounds 37 & 38 -Crystal Palace - 69X

Welcome to the last 69x round for the Friday Trophy.

Crystal Palace circuit is a former motor racing circuit in Crystal Palace, London, England. The circuit was located within Crystal Palace park. The route of the track is still largely extant today but the roads are now mainly used for access to the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre located in the park, and to events within the upper parts of Crystal Palace Park. Some parts of the track are closed off and part is used for an annual Sprint Meeting, on the Spring Bank Holiday weekend.
In 1953 he circuit had been reduced in length to 1.39 miles (2.2 km), bypassing the loop past the lake, and pressure from the local residents led to an injunction which reduced motor sport events in the park to only five days per year. A variety of races took place, including sports cars, Formula Three, the London Trophy for Formula Two, and even non-championship Formula One races.
Average speeds continued to rise over the years, with the first 100 mph (161 km/h) lap average set in 1970 by that year's Formula One world champion, Jochen Rindt. Also in 1970, the injunction limiting race days expired and racing was increased to 14 days a year. However, driver safety was coming into focus in the early seventies and it became clear that racing around a park at 100 mph (161 km/h) was not safe. Expensive improvements were undertaken, but it was not enough to save the circuit. The last International meeting was in May 1972, the final lap record going to Mike Hailwood at an average speed of 103.39 mph (166.39 km/h).

This seasons tracks will be easy and well known to have a smaller time gap between the lights and heavies,
if there is a too big gap on a track, a stop and go for the lights in the 30min race will be recommended!

This is really designed to be a fun series with 3 different car mods
- running 1 sprint length race of ~15 min and a ~30 min race with the same car.
- ONE SHIFT-R with NO Stop n Go

Light drivers are restricted to not use a Matra MS80/10, Lotus 49b, Brabham BT26a, McLaren M7 or Ferrari 312
Heavy drivers will allways have a free car choice!

"Restrict chat to necessary messages . . . "  Worth mentioning there was a message typed during the race last night.  It may have been after warp contact with my car.  Seems inappropriate for what was supposed to be a fun series.  Any future Series involving direct Light and Heavy competition, may require the Moderator to supervise attempts at intimidation.

Until penalties are introduced for unnecessary race chat, I shall continue to ignore such messages.  That includes emergencies.  If I rear end an Ambulance on the track sometime, it's not my fault!   :D

Congrats Mark and Andreas! Nice driving Mark! I was really worried we might collide going into the first right hander in both heats. It's very difficult to get the braking correct there, especially with cold tires.

That was fun. It appears I needed some more practice though. My inconsistency is killing me. Stupid me forgot to slow down late in the first heat. I got sideways coming out the final turn. I used the pitlane so I wouldn't have to lift to recover from the slide. Bad move in hindsight. As I was reentering the track proper I shifted and then BAM! No more V12. I guess I was obsessed with doing a 1:47.

The second heat, I forgot I'm not supposed to slide the car into the final turn until lap 3 or 4. Stupid mistake put me to the back. I had little trouble with Martin cresting the hill before the palace. He got so bad out of shape and some warp made it where I couldn't tell which way to go. It looks like I flipped him. My apologies. As I closed the gap to Andreas the first time, I thought I might still have a chance to catch Mark. Likely a figment of my imagination but dreams of glory can be fun. I was taking enough time off of his lead matched with the laps remaining to appear mathematically possible. That didn't factor in passing Andreas or 4 subsequent spins.

I closed the gap to Andreas 4 times! Every time I got close, I'd spin. I struggled every time I tried to follow Andreas into the Ramp Bend. Luckily I never bent the car spinning there. Andreas drove well. I think he only made one significant mistake from the time I first caught him until the final turn. I think I would have needed 5 or 6 laps behind him before I'd get a good idea of where I might be able to pass him. He finally made a mistake on the final lap before the final turn. I wasn't able to capitalize on it though. Instead I hit him. I thought I may have flipped him and I could probably take the position but I sat still until I could tell his car was moving in prib. I wasn't going to finish if Andreas didn't continue.

I enjoyed it. Andreas probably had a lot of fun. Mark may have a got a little bored in the 2nd heat but he probably liked getting the win. It would have been nice to see Axel and Dean do better.

Thanks guys, see you next week.

Wow, a very nice surprise to win both races.  Very difficult to get the car to work around this tortuous track, and I went with the Lotus because it had a good stability to it.  But Greg showed I think how much better the BRM was.  However I was able to profit from his and Axel's mistakes in both races.
