Post by: Cookie on December 10, 2014, 04:28:19 PM +0000
Welcome to the S27 F2 Championship - Round 10 - Monaco

The last round of the S27 Formula 2 Trophy.
Circuit de Monaco is a street circuit laid out on the city streets of Monte Carlo and La Condamine around the harbour of the principality of Monaco. It is commonly referred to as "Monte Carlo" because it is largely inside the Monte Carlo neighbourhood of Monaco. A very challenging tight twisty circuit, few opportunities for passing but plenty of chances to hit the scenery. You’ve heard this before but please take care, especially on Lap 1!
There will be no handicaps this season but, much like the 67-based series, tokens will be used!

Matra MS7 FVA :       16 tokens
Matra MS5 FVA :       14 tokens
Brabham BT23 FVA : 14 tokens
Lola T100 FVA :        14 tokens
Lotus 48 FVA :         14 tokens
Lotus 41B FVA:        12 tokens

2 accidents in early laps put me out of race, will blame it on late home/ yuk setup anything, truth is my poor driving.

I got the pole with difficulty, only 0,16sec from Bastian.
Unfortunately Bastian rear ended me on the 1st lap.
I restarted last but, on the second lap, there were several side by side contacts with Bernie.
So I prefered to retired as I had no motivation anymore.

It's a pity we were only 5 at the start.

I'm so sorry, just braked as in qualy but it was too late for your racing line.
i didn't know and took to much risk.
Didnt want it to end that way. some more mistakes later. grats to Dave Curtis, no mistakes.

Tough place to trade places David , sorry you lost your MoJo .
I had a lonely race to 3rd (pending moderation ) practise was interesting when my pedals stopped working for some reason , had to disco switch off then give them a good smacking , PC re boot and back into the game but no time left for qually or race testing.  Found my race set up wasn't good with too much understeer though it did get better with hotter rubber , couldn't do anything about the front runners so ran my own race hoping someone would fall off the quay or maybe stop at the Tabac for gitannes or similar  , no takers though so had to play follow the leader all the way home .

Bit of a race to forget, the only two events to note were Clive's mahoosive shunt up the hill that had a big knock-on effect for those behind, and being lapped towards the end. Too many mistakes, not enough practice. Roll on the off-season.

I know there were only a handful of us on the Heavy grid,   but probably a good call round here...  I'd hate to get in the way of the big boys/men...

So, with my permitted tokens;  took a look at GPLRANK to see which chassis appeared to be more popular;  M4A won then.  Didn't look as if the Lotus 41B was in there much...

Managed a 1:33 round here the other night,  so thought that would probably do for starters. Although, I'd made a comment  'unstable at chicane'  - whatever that is supposed to mean!

Tried it again for qually;  managed to get 4.5 seconds off PB from the other night with the same (default) setup.  Managed to get another .45 seconds off that in the race;  probably due to Bastian's generous tow :)
Also realised that despite the scraping sounds at the chicane,  it didn't seem to be crashing;  so maybe those unstable comments were a little unfounded..

Unlucky DR.   Realistically,  you/Bastian should have eased away & probably kept each other busy for a while.   Was happy enough to follow Bastian around for as long as possible;  just trying to keep touch in case of any issues.

And there it was,  at the chicane.  Unlucky fella!

I managed to pick up the place & tried to keep calm.  I knew that Bastian would be back;  was somewhat surprised when that gap got bigger & bigger.

In the end, I was just trying to be careful.  Every lap, I was a little surprised to not crash at the chicane / end up in the barrier at the hairpin.  Still, there's always the next lap... :)

On the last lap,  engine started spluttering up the hill.  Maybe the extra gallon would have been a good idea after all;  there again - I was expecting to be lapped...
Rolled over the line with a few psi of fuel available.  Luckily, there were no other cars with me for the last lap.

Yep,  I was lucky.  I also quite like the M4A now :)

</ramble>
ok, so it's probably pending final moderation etc - but congrats DaveR on the season win.  Also, another Black Night cup by the looks of it.

Cheers all,  I guess I'll see most of you next season!
Dave.

Too many error for me,enough to lose the third position. Now i don't remember but i have lost the car, like Grupp,in   the chicane after the tunnel 2 or 3 times.Anyway the third position could be the maximum for me.

In hindsight, but it is always difficult to look backwards when driving GPL, I maybe should have stayed away from this race.

I had been away for the weekend, giving my wife a birthday treat, and got home totally knackered only a couple of hours before the start. It was my good lady who roused me from my dozing in the armchair to ask if I had a race. Don't worry, it was not because she encourages my participation in GPL......she wanted to change the channel on the TV!!!!

I knew that I had a decent setup for Moanco and plenty of tokens in the bank, so I opted for the Brab and slowly wound up the wick until I was pressing Robert for pole. He just had the edge on me and I could not find that perfect lap that prib promised that would have given me the front spot. Then to really upset me, my team mate Iestyn drops in a bomb of a lap to snatch pole.

The start as always was critical and I was careful to make sure that I did not lose places or drop too far behind Iestyn and Robert. Iestyn went off like a rocket and started to build a gap even on lap 1 :o, although I felt I could go a little quicker than Robert there was no way that I could make a pass around here. Monaco is always a race against the circuit first and the other cars second and I should have been concentrating harder.

Then I guess mental tiredness caught me out at St Devote when I went in a fraction too fast on cold tyres and the back end just squirmed away from me. I almost caught the slide but ended up going slowly up the pavement on the inside as several cars swept past. I knew rejoining would be difficult but I saw a gap in the traffic behind and nailed the gas.

I had just got going and the engine went "pop" and I was a road block for cars behind. SORRY GUYS  :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\. I hit the escape just as someone ( Marco??) hit my gearbox.  Hope everyone got past...I just went to bed!!

Grats to Robert and Iestyn on stunning pace, just wish that I could have joined the fight.  :(

I too should probably have missed this race, as I had a bit of a cold, but I didn't think it'd affect me too badly... ** those of a delicate disposition should not read any further **

...at some point early in the race I sneezed...and covered the screen in snot!! I had to.... er, actually, I'll just let your imaginations handle that :-)

Tried to continue but regular sneezing caused me to be slow and erratic, and when I started getting lapped, I thought it best for everyone that I go back to bed...

Bah Humbug

Quali was pretty close with Clive improving his times and then cheeky Iestyn taking pole at the checkers in that session. Impressive, in his 3rd lap. Had a mechanical problem and some probs with traffic, but was able to pull off a sub26 which was my aim.

As Monaco always has been a difficult track for me (as tight tracks usually are) -also thanks to my 270 degree wheel not allowing the steering ratio I would like for my driving style- I didn't expect to contend for the win, especially with Iestyn and Clive around who are fierce racers, especially here.

Was very nervous at the start, and kind of all over the place the first laps. Iestyn was driving away, and Clive close behind. Clive had to dodge me at Gazométres, the final turn, when I had a halfspin and bogged down. As always he did a great job avoiding me. Also messed up St. Devote, and in my mind I felt guilty when I saw Clive go sideways in the mirrors....what a shame Clive, you deserved to be up there to race for the win...

Inherited the lead when Iestyn looped it at Gazométres, and he pushed hard behind me. He just was way quicker than me, and after a few laps already the pressure got too much and I messed up St. Devote, Iestyn went by. Again Iestyn looped it at the final turn, and from then on no pressure anymore and was able to run consistently to the checkers, taking the win and the Lights championship! :)

Good job Iestyn, stunning pace, and grats to Piero in the T84 ;) Also well done finishers, and thanks to Jethro who was very courteous letting me lap very early towards Portier...grats also to Dave Curtis for Heavies win, and Bastian and Bernie for podium!

Congrats Dave Rainier for the Heavies championship, and all those are in honorable places, Greg and Dean in Lights; and Dave Curtis and Roger in Heavies. Thanks all for racing, and thanks to the mods. Guys like Axel and Jethro are invaluable with their free servers, thanks guys! :)

Tough place to trade places David.

Not at all !
Just look at the replay : You were completely against the guardrail during several meters so the track was totally free in front of me.

I submit a report, the moderator will decide.

Congrats Rob, Iestyn, Piero! Nice job finishing the season Rob. Very impressive. Congrats on your championship! It's well deserved.

I had just got going and the engine went "pop" and I was a road block for cars behind. SORRY GUYS  :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\. I hit the escape just as someone ( Marco??) hit my gearbox.  Hope everyone got past...I just went to bed!!

That was me Clive. :( A perfect storm of events to begin my slow march back through the field. I saw you had had trouble when I came out of T1. You were pulling away fine at first. I looked down at the tach for my shift and when I looked up you were much slower than I expected. I couldn't think fast enough to try going over the curb so I braked as hard as possible. Had I not looked down at the tach I may have noticed something wasn't right in time to avoid you. Oh well, that's racing.

Monaco now likes me less than I like it. The more I've driven it the more I've grown to like it but I only seem to have bad luck racing here online.

I enjoyed it. I kept Marco and Donnie entertained for a while. The car didn't drive bad. It would have been nice to have some better luck and not shifted into neutral, sliding 90 degrees into the wall at Mirabeau.

Thanks guys. I hope to see you on the track again soon.

Grats to Robert for the win and the S27 Champ! WD!

Seems I never understand how Iestyn is making such times :o
How do you shift? 0.083 sec for upshift and 0.138 sec for downshift, constantly!  :o

My race began good as I was lucky to avoid the debris on the track, left from rotating cars in my front.
In a save 3rd position, I was a little confused when I met a McLaren starting after a s+r out of the pits whom I thought was Robert, as ID run a Cooper in practice in my memory...
So I did not want to challenge a teammate and kept behind  ::)
This brought Piero in my slipstream and I got under pressure what made me sweat so much that it ran into my eyes and I was blinded sometimes. A spin in the tunnel was the result and I lost 2 places...

Not a friend of this track, but some races have made me pretty save here, so I was a little frustrated after the race.

I suspect I understand fully  ::)

I have admired the speed of all H-shift users (clutch and clutchless) all season, but not the method.

Maybe shift times below the standard GPL defaults should be a topic for debate in the end of season review?

Using GPLShift is not forbidden, even when it gives a slight advantage accelerating, with less neutral upshift time. Iestyn makes the difference with his driving, and not by using GPLShift.

We (the mods) have been discussing about implementing a rule to use Fairshift 2.0 (for H-shifters), to allow for a level playing field, but nothing has been decided yet, and IMO it would be up to the members to vote for in a poll.
