Seems I had been testing at Kyalami70 which says it is "experimental" so we'd best use this one that has 5395 downloads
On my system the track and some grass goes black at times, maybe a "feature" of my drivers.
The experimental one displays perfectly, ah well.

I faffed about in the Pantera and managed a TT lap of 1:33.7 then got in the IROC and did a 1:29.3, and if I wasn't such a lead footed oaf I could have improved that to a high 28

Have a go in the Panty BOSS Simon if you would? I found it too fast so included the Stock, which is likely
to be slower than the other cars, certainly here it will be. If the Panty BOSS fits better I could include it.

EDIT: Having trouble with the track on line, every time I connect and drive out of the pits the server crashes.
I will test some alternate versions

cheers for the photo Matt, just updated the Nogrip advert with it. People get more motivated by a nice racing pic  :)

though will add I don't know how popular NG is these days. They've updated their forums by putting all racing sims almost as a secondary concern in sub-topics ???
Maybe good man Geoffers can post it over at GC too to get some of those boys over.

Could be just me, but I've rebooted etc etc, and if I run the Kyalami79 on line it crashes shortly after  I drive off
the 75Kyalami boots me as a cheat every time. and so far the only one that works reliably is the 70 version
which is what I started with....
I need to do some more testing, and if anyone (more than one) would like to d/l Kyalami70 from NG and try a test
race that would be most helpfull :helpsmilie:

I have downloaded whatever the link goes to on NG (think it's '79) but can't join server with it as that seems to be a different track version.

Will try an AI race.

I have started the server with Kyalami70, 75 and 79. please see if you can join and then do a couple of laps with each version
move it on to next track as required.

I downloaded directly from NG.

70 ran ok

But when using 79 I lost connection to host during P1.  I think that the server may now be stuck.  I can't join it so can't get any further.  79 still runs on my pc.

Thanks Clive, yes 79 had crashed the server same as when I tried. I have restarted with 70 and 75
I was unable to connect to 75 as it kept booting me as cheat. Perhaps you could try that one.
70 ran fine on and off line
Which is a bit odd, as the 75 is the 70 with some eye candy added. The grass colour n the 70
is a bit strange, but so far is the most dependable.

We will have to run with the 70 version that I started with.

Sorry I had to go to eat !!
For what I felt with the track of the 79 I could not enter, with 75 80% of the time crash.
With version 70 must be careful to curbs.
I'm testing the PC, hopefully good.

Thanks Fede.
This 70 version for me is smoother with less bumps than the 79 one.
Anyway, it's the only one that seems to work, so we will be using it.

Hi Matt,

Going forward, have you identified which of the original GPL tracks are available?  And are there multiple variants that need sorting out?

Can you get Monaco with just the hairpin at the end of the lap and no swimming pool?

Let me know if you want something investigating.

More to the point, which version of kyalami did we finally settle on?  ??? So glad I posted two adverts for this weeks races elsewhere only for both races to be changed ::) very professional  ;D

I wasn't trying too hard to have all the tracks as exact '67 variants, just as close as it's practical to do
I was more interested in following the 67 season with something like the period tracks
e.g the 67 season ran at Le Mans Buggati, but GPL used Rouen because of licencing issues
I prefer Rouen anyway, so am using that.
If there is an accurate decent period version of Monaco available then I will use it, but I would be
quite happy to run the 79 version if that's the best one. If you have found good reliable period
track versions then PM me if you can.

Thanks for your support MJ  :P
I thought we had run at Kyalami 79 before, but I must have been thinking of GTL perhaps
I have never had two versions of a track be unuseable before  :o
So, apologies for the unprofessionalism. We will be running the '70 variant as that is the
only one that people who took the time to help test could all use without issues.

Was enjoying that but the rear end was just getting looser & looser. :(
Two spins in two laps, meant I lost two places (to 6th I think) & was swiftly followed by another rescued loss of the back-end... ::)

After my hardwork at the start, I couldn't take the depression of spinning off & spinning off till I was last :-\

p.s. Evil, I think we were in the same car, but I couldn't work out why I was a fair bit faster in the corners but you just roared away on the straights (even when I had good toe ???). Was losing me about 0.4 secs (while getting your drag) on the main straight alone :'(

Good fun, had two chances to dice with MJ after I put a wheel up a kerb early on and
had to wait for the field to pass...
If you weren't aware, one of the Daytonas has no rear spoiler, and is faster down the straights
but waves it's botty around for fun. I think it's a light blue one?

Congratulations to Clive and John and Evilclive ;D.

During the tests are not able to find the time ???!

The qualifications were even worse in the end I reach down with the setup of a point change 1-26-7 :o, never done during the tests and save the setup.

Before the race load setup 80L and put soft tires and put the change in a point forward helped me in output curve ???.
Beautiful discovery and even a ride on rettelineo I pass all :o.

I enjoyed seeing the struggle between Clive and John ;D.

Congratulations to Evilclive :D, shame about the disconnected too long, I would never be able to pass you :-\.

Thanks to all the next.

Hello ;D.

Funny that you should mention that Legzy. I was asking myself the same question, especially when I was taking chunks out Federico later in the race.
I based my setup on one the Clive Loynes shared, but I tweaked the gears and reduced the toe in/ toe out, plus a few other minor adjustments until it felt right.

I did feel a little "out of place" running in 4th spot early in the race, but when I started catching Federico at half distance, and then actually passed him I got delusions of grandeur. I suspect that John and Clive Loynes had a little contact because suddenly Fedrerico and myself were in a 4 way battle for the lead. But I was put in my place when John delivered a smart smack on my A** and I dropped back to 4th again.
Eventually i got back to FZ and made another pass with my extra speed only to blow it all a few laps later by running wide.
But overall, quite a satisfying race and a good result for the Soggies.  Grats to Clive and John, and thanks to Federico for a great race.

What kept you!?   ;D

@Legzy: I think it will be in the gear ratio.  Mine was geared to rev its nuts off going down the hill, which was the only part of the lap where I got any breathing space from John.

I must thank John on two counts; firstly for taking the big Cobra and secondly for waiting for me after he had given me a very light tap.

I assumed that John wanted to race, since he had handicapped himself, so I'll find out later if I need to apologise for getting in his way all race.
The 427 seemed a tad quicker on the first part of that wonderful straight but the Daytona just walked away from him after the start/finish line.  As Graham Hill said, "I'm good at straights.".

After John and I had made contact, John fell back behind Federico and Evil.  But I knew he would be back.  Don't think that they had the special wide bodied version of the Daytona.  ;D

Then, on the penultimate lap, I made a mistake and John took the lead.  But he apparently wanted to gift the race to me and slowed as we approached the kink on the straight.  He had miss calculated and I was already hell bent on getting to T1 anyway, thanks to Daytona power.  I made an awful job of the last lap but nothing big enough to let John have another rethink.  ;D  Damn close call though +0:00.096 seconds!  ::)

Grats to John and Federico and wd all finishers.

And thanks to Matt for a great race format.

Cheeky beggar  :P
What kept me was cars that we haven't run before needing adding to the database
with the right tyres. You should do GTR2 on Sundays, Luke is even slower than me  ::)

Early days, so see how it goes, but I might need to do something to stop it becoming a Daytona spec series
hopefully other cars will be a better choice at some of the other tracks.

Good race evening for the most part, a good turnout, great track and cool set of cars  8)

Installed the track at 19.50!  :o then tried 3 cars to see what felt fun, settled on the Daytona.
Then surprised myself being 4th on the timesheet for most of qually only to get usurped by my nemesis Legzy right at the end  :fencing:
Got swamped at race start as just got onto grid to admire the cars when the blinking lights changed straight away  :o had a few early dices then pulled a gap in 7th and chased Stig in 6th hard for half the race, very cool  8)
Alas I then ran out of brakes at t1 and lost a place or two.  :'( but still had great pace until about the last 6 laps when my rear tyres started crying enough and where I then had two oversteer slow speed spins at the final uphill corner and dropped right down to a crap 10th place, poor reward for my general race pace  :( .
Shame but at least it felt like a proper classic car race with the numbers present  :thumbup1:

First of all, apologies to EvilClive. I'd like to blame the unwieldy Cobra for the punt, but the fact is that it was my own stupid fault by following too close and couldn't get it stopped in time. Should have been more patient. Likewise with Clive L, I was trying to go deep and get a cut-back in the last corner, but got too close to avoid the swinging Daytona arse. Sorry!

Apart from that it was lots of fun. Don't often get the chance to race with Clive properly as he usually has the greater good of the team in mind, but this time was different. I made my usual mediocre start and ended up behind Clive and Federico. Federico disn't look particularly comfortable in the Daytona and I got past after a little while, then sat on Clive's bumper for most of the race trying to figure out a way past. The Cobra was good under acceleration but ran out of puff on the straight. I'd tried longer gearing in practice but it was a few tenths slower overall and I figured I'd be needing all the laptime I could get against the Daytonas.

There were a couple of places that I could see that a safe pass would be possible, but both of them required Clive to make a small mistake and he wasn't playing ball. Started to get closer to try and prompt a mistake, but that wasn't working and I ended up tapping him round at the last corner. Waiting for him to recover meant EvilClive and Federico got past as well and I then committed the cardinal sin of hitting a team-mate for the second time that night...

Decided to roll the window down for a bit to let the red mist out and was then able to get back past EvilClive after he made small mistake in the second sector, and got the cut-back on Federico at the last corner. I think he must have been on longer gearing than Clive as I could get past and stay ahead into T1.

Set about chasing Clive down for the last few laps, which became harder and harder as the rubber disappeared. Finally made a pass on what I thought was the last lap, but then had an attack of guilt about the contact earlier and eased off approaching the line. It took a few seconds for me to realise there was still a lap to go and that I'd have to try and do it all again (not the first time, and probably won't be the last). Caught back up over the course of the lap and nearly managed it but Clive pipped me to the line.

All in all, good fun. Grats Clive :thumbup1:

I thought it must be the gears, I wimped out on that 'rev the nuts down the hill' setting as I thought it would kill the engine half way :-\ but obviously not.
Evil I guess you could be tight with the Toe setting too. Out of interest, do you use manual clutch? As I believe that is also slightly faster.

Title: Re: UKPnG Season 10 1960's GT Cup - Kyalami - Jan 29
Post by: EvilClive on January 31, 2015, 09:40:04 AM +0000
I do have the clutch pedal activated, but generally only use it to prevent stalling the engine in a spin. That says something about my expectations in a race!!! ::) I am practicing using the clutch off the grid, but still don't have that reliable enough to avoid a total crashfest if I risked it in a real race situation. With my current setup I get too much wheelspin and lose ground off the start in almost every race.

I don't use the paddles at all and I have my shifter set up for sequential gear change. I don't use the clutch, but years of conditioning in UKGPL to avoid over revving the engine make me lift off the gas at each change to keep that needle safely below max revs.
I am careful on upshifts and downshifts, the latter being the one that usually kills engines by downshifting too early.

So, despite using 99% of max revs available in the Daytona at the end of the Kyalami straight , I think I only lost about 3% engine health over the whole race. I have no idea if that is good or bad, but I feel safer knowing that the engine won't quit on me before the end of a race.....hopefully.
