Title: UKGPL Season 28 (2015) - Syracuse - Jan 11
Post by: Billy Nobrakes on January 07, 2015, 11:08:24 PM +0000
1965 Mod – 50th Anniversary Cup – Syracuse

The second round of the 50th Anniversary Cup for the 1965 mod will be held on the road course at Syracuse, Sicily. A narrow circuit with plenty of stone walls if you get it wrong.

The series is open to anyone who wishes to enter. We will definitely run one server. Following the full grid at Brands Hatch negotiations are ongoing about opening a second grid. If this happens then “Pro” drivers will drive on UKGPL8 – with no restrictions on chassis. "Ams" drivers can join UKGPL9. Borderline drivers can join either grid but are asked to take the restricted chassis (Honda, Cooper or BT7). Ideally we would like an equal spread of drivers on each grid but there are no strict rules. If a second grid is opened then Ams drivers will score points separately.

We will use the 60fpsV2newmod (ftp://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/Replays/Archive/Season27/60fps/) for the whole of the mini-series.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

The race will be run under INT rules. A maximum of one reset is allowed, followed by a compulsory stop and go in the pits. Reported incidents will be moderated (in accordance with UKGPL rules) there is no “red zone” moderation.
65 Patch: The 2.02 Release of the 65mod can and should be used. You need a working installation of the 65 mod to install the 2.02 Update.

If there is only one grid:
Pro drivers are requested not to use the Lotus, Ferrari, BRM or BT11 for any race.
Pro drivers are not prohibited from using the faster cars  but they won't score championship points if they do.
After 3 rounds, the top three drivers in the championship may be restricted to the BT7 & the Cooper (no Honda) for the two last races. (Depends on what the table looks like).

Points will be awarded according to the original 1965 system, 9 points for the winner, 6 for second, 4 for third, 3 for fourth, 2 for fifth & 1 for sixth.

Race List = IGOR
Server = UKGPL_8 [Optionally 2nd grid onUKGPL9]

Looks like this will now be a six race series - Killarney is open for business.

Annoying that this clashes with the BBC4 series on racing legends - it's Mr Surtees his week. The Beeb don't put this series on iPlayer, which is infuriating. I missed Graham Hill last Sunday....

Doesn't BBC has a mediathek where you can see any missed program online?

Every german broadcaster offers this service ;)

Arf - how annoying! I had the Graham Hill one on in the background while racing, and was going to catch up with it on iPlayer.. yet now I can't  :(

Cookie - usually all BBC programs from the last week are on it... but they have now prioritised keeping popular ones up on the server for a month, and removed the extra month given to you if you downloaded it... so a turn for the worse, IMO. In this case... I imagine there is some legal rights issue (e.g. BBC didn't include online playback in the commission of it  ::)). BCE does appear once in one of them - that was probably where the issue arose..

Edit: BCE = Bernie Ecclestone.. or the other way around, if that fits better

Documentaries of all sorts usually make a repeat round or 2 eventually, from the BBC.  Last weeks was better than expected, with fast motion action playback not too annoying.  So I recommend catching the rest, or the replay. :D  Online there's a timeline which lets you watch the live feed, and the previous 2 hours to too.

Two grids might be a wise choice, as there is pretty much a full grid (I was out, but someone might have fallen foul of 'full grid slots' and been unable to join).

There's roughly a split of half and half in Pros and Ams racing, so it suits the points system too. In other mods, car differences mean a full grid can definitely compete on a more equal footing. I'd agree though on leaving it up to driver choice.

Could points even be retrospectively applied for the Ams? Anyway, two grids would allow more drivers on each to take the 4 faster cars, with Honda for the 'mid-grid' and Cooper/BT7 for those that might scamper off.

I just hope adding another grid wouldn't affect participation :) Could it even add to it, I wonder?

..not really Clive. There was carnage at the start, carnage at T4? and ..somewhere else. I was having enough trouble with my poor frame rate, I didn't really need the carnage...or the red plate instead of a steering wheel, which I know affected other BT11 drivers judging by comments at start of the race... just wasn't my night..

Gents, a few of you posted comments about my graphics woes in iGor. I didn't want to distract people just before a race, so please see Brands thread and I'll talk to you tomorrow (Q1 is 'is my power supply good enough...).

...now off to watch the John Surtees story on restart.

*** check, it is now on BBC2 at 2215 !!! ***

Baab - hope you realised in qually that when I rammed you (slowly) after your spin, I was trying to help my teamie face the right way..

Enjoy all those still racing..

Screen freeze and why oh why have we not learnt a single thing regarding the spread of the grids. The last time we raced here at Syracuse in the 65's it was a disaster and so it was again tonight. From the moment people were slow off the line and people avoiding them had nowhere to go you just knew there was going to be carnage up ahead. Hopefully the "but we are supposed to be Pro drivers" mentality ends here and we get staggered grids even if those at the back cannot see the flag.
Edit. Starting grid rant now over.

avoided the lap 1 melee then got lost in the cow fields after being rear ended and launched over the barriers , took an age to try and find a way back to the track with no luck so had to s/r , after that and the subsequent pit in I was miles behind , decided to retire after trundling around on my own going nowhere  :-\

Not a track I liked much , found it very hard to see the corner apex due to the track and walls being all the same colour .

As for the 60 fps was OK other than in the hairpins where the graphics were strugling to keep up

Grtas to the finishers and the podium chaps , you know who are  :D

I chose a tall 1st gear, and it put me at a disadvantage for the start. I did not slow down enough for the 1st lap Melee. I bumped a car at a fairly slow speed, but the car rolled over and caught fire. Then on the second lap, I did not judge the distance to Bernie's car correctly, and I gave his car a massive shunt. I am sorry that I ruined your race. I was able to continue without a shift-r, but I gave myself a stop and go for a penalty. I will submit an incident report, and put myself at the mercy of the moderator.

I was able catch two more cars, and I bounced off the wall both times when I tried to overtake. If this were real life, I would have damaged my car much more than in the game. I was able to finish in the points, but I can't get any satisfaction from it since I took out Bernie.

I will put in some practice at Goodwood so that I will not make so many mistakes.

Thanks for the race,
Walter

Dean,
The race post was fairly clear - there were different handicaps applying depending on whether we had one or two grids. My second post was a "Reminder".

Running these races depends very much on the goodwill of those providing the servers - whom I am very grateful to. Whilst we would expect the server provider to make every best effort for championship races, these are fun races.

...My second post was a "Reminder"...

A reminder that arrived as people are already in iGOR and joining the race servers (4 pm my time), and after I've already closed my browser (and everything else except iGOR) in preparation for the race (gotta save RAM, etc.).

Another reason to not bother practicing, as the "rules" are open to change until the flag drops, apparently, and if you don't check the race thread and miss a (after the) last minute update and join with the wrong car or whatever, too bad. Great.

:)had a lot of fun .
as to 60fps:
- got steady 60fps during race and practise
- red bar was fine ( low to zero ) all over
- during race cars in front did slightly stutter constanly ( no effect on fps meter, but on steering, braking etc. so missmatched position calculation by server or mine side )

- during practise I got a freeze followed by black screen. Taskmanager told me GPL dosent respond.
I have no idear what the reason for that freeze could be, where to look/investigate ...any hints ?

(my new internet stuff serves me now 46.000 over 12.000. so must be an improvement rather then an prob. Only new hardware to my PC actually is CSW wheel , replaced the RS500. Maybe driver conflict ? Cause I got same freezes offline occasionally, which is new   ??? )

back to online under 60fps:
I got the impression under 60fps these `messages`like `xxx left race`do cause extra massiv stuttering compared to 36fps. ( not to mentioned chat messages during race ) . Any can confirm this impression ?

I did not have massive stuttering, but my FPS dropped to 45 when someone left the server. I was driving past the front stretch when the chat message appeared at the top of my screen. Then the FPS returned to back to normal, and it did not really cause me any problems. I thought it was strange because I had very good FPS up until then.

I have read somewhere that this is one of the downsides to using OGLv2. There is an option to turn off chat messages that might help.

No chat, will not avoid the red GPL messages!

The best is to modify it with gplshift.ini

[ GPL Font ]------------------
Auto_Set_GPL_Font_Size = 0

This leaves a very small chat but it does no longer make stutters

Although, maybe I should have downloaded the track & tried running in text-only mode with the aim of a point or two  ;)

May have to roll back to the old card & hope all is ok for tomorrow night...

Dave just leave the new GPU in the PC,

- start Win with F8 pressed to safety mode ( now Win uses his hardware drivers! no NV!)
- now uninstall all Nvidia software and delete any NVidia folders
- reboot
- now install the latest NV driver package available

hehe - so the hardware support thread is running into here too... ;)
I found before that my machine didn't work in safe mode,   boots normally [or if screwed,  re-gained this via recovery console] but halts with safe mode.   But after recent changes,  I'll give it another go.

Did uninstall all the nvidia software/drivers that I could via control panel,  then also ran DDU for good measure.
When that found the old Omega drivers for previous card,  but didn't remove them;  manually removed all referenced registry keys manually.
Tried nv driver that came on CD,  then the latest,  then an early one.

GTL runs fine,   but some GPL still fails to start in OpenGLv2.   I think D3D may have sort of worked, but with resolution limitation/pribluda issue.
I did download some other opengl game to test & that also fails to get started.

I'll give it some more time tonight....

Bloomin' PCs...  getting too old for this stuff...

A shame to lose the replay for this one... looks like no one has it, as everyone was disco'd? Any replay at all might help piece together the result though, even if from qualifying, as we remembered the race order.

In the race itself... but for an early mistake, I might have been able to draft up to Rob after his, like Axel. But this gave a great battle with Axel, a few times I was within millimetres. 60fps also let me get very close to the walls in some of the fast bends, so it would have been nice to see just how close! Apart from that... drove the whole race with a 30 degree offset to the right.. a result of the Lap 1 melee. Greg went right, I went left... we both flew through the air. I did a multiple pirouette, before landing at the hairpin facing the right way ;D.

If I had thought quicker, I could have done a shift-r there and then.. but after that, decided it was not worth the SnG, and it didn't seem to harm my laptime oddly enough, just made the handling a bit quirky. I tried a few wall taps to improve it, but it definitely didn't ::). If I hadn't lost a second on my best Q lap at the flag, then perhaps I might have been able to avoid the melee (caused by cold tyres I think, as a few of us almost were).

Thanks for the tip Axel, I will try that for upcoming 60fps races, as the red messages do lead to stutters.
