These should be fun around here. Not raced Monaco in ages, used to be a regular sim event in one incarnation or another. Always a challenge  :)

When do people generally jump online for a bit of practise? Would rather try and be there same time than hotlapping on my own with no idea what's competitive or not.

Hi Mark,

I usually start my practice on the Friday and will try out the server then, if it is running.

No particular time though.  Just depends when I'm free.

May also do Saturday evening but that depends on a lot of ifs ands and buts.

Sunday and Monday the server is used for GTR2 and GTL.

I often found Federico on the server on Tuesday nights and that would be a good indicator of how much faster I needed to go!  :o

Sometimes the server is there on Wednesdays and sometimes it isn't.

Not sure which version is the '79 one but should be good!  ;D  Ideal for a spec race.

Indeed, it would be nice to do practice online with some fellow racers. I found it enjoyable (in my LFS time) to be talking cars and setups, chasing eachother around the track and being able to getting driving tips from one another too.

I found that lately the other servers are still up after i finished a GTL or a P&G race so that creates more possibility's to meet online. I don't get much more spare time for practice so it is mainly Monday's and Thursday's for me. Sunday evenings might be a good evening for practice for me though..

So a joint practice could be on Friday, Saturday, Monday or Tuesday and Wednesday if the server is up. :) :)

Maybe we should pick one day and name it the unofficial practice day?

My vote would go for Tuesday around 9 PM UK time.

Hmm a random variety of times then like my own practise sessions  :P
Are you guys on Steam? Just wondering if that would be useful to notify when one of us are jumping online/firing up Gtr2. Know it works for AC but as we didn't buy Gtr2 through it, may not work.
The Steam messenger works well too for notifying each other. All you need to do is add each other as friends in steam, then it will tell you when that persons online or you can send them a message, even if they have another game/prog open.
Maybe some other in obtrusive live messenger/notifier could work.
Still can't believe we can't hook up a live timing app to the server that could post up/ record lap times set after all these years. Other sites seem to use them. ???

Just think more interaction like this would rekindle the sim racing community rather than a handful of individuals.

Ps I often do my practise during episodes of Eastenders whilst the missus is distracted  ;D or on a Sunday whilst she's inundated with marking!

First quick run around the place resulted in a 1:51.4 with the car full of fuel. I guess that will be about 5 seconds shy of what's required

Ahhh, that's because Tony is more thorough than I am, and had limited the cars, whereas I just allow all cars
for events, and let people take the correct ones.
Restarted now with all cars.

Well I was doing 1:49s in the couple of laps I did to set the race length, so Simon will be faster than that.

You just need to make it clear that this is a vital part of your road to full recovery.   ::)

We may have to switch to meetings at Chadderton for the rest of the winter as the sports hall in Birkdale could be out of action for some time.  I'm suffering withdrawal symptoms!  :taz:

Actually managed to get online practise with another human present today  :o  much more engaging when someone else is there as it gives you a target/benchmark and someone to chat with. Got to within a sec of a very quick Mr Loynes in the end so pretty happy with my early pace.  :) just need to avoid the Armco on the night now  :P

Since a quick lap here is a continuous string of near misses, I'm hoping that race pace will be a good deal back from the "who cares, throw everything at it and get another car when it's bent" qually lap; which I have never mastered anyway!

@MJ I need my retirement practice to maintain a position of "reasonably quick human"!   :P

1.42s, only going on what Simon mentioned previously. I'm only doing 1.46s like you MJ. Still not really figured out how to drive anything with the engine at the back, much happier with front-engined stuff!  ::)

Did no practise & turned up a bit late, left me 2nd last on the grid as I created a setup.
Gained about 3 places from a crash ahead, cleanly passed a couple more drivers (which isn't easy here) & spent the next 10 laps bumper to bumper trying to find a way past EvilClive.
Despite the inches between us, I only gave one nudge as we exited that tricky never-ending hairpin right at the end of the lap. I lost 2.8 seconds there, but had made it back up within less than 2 laps to re-engage combat.
All over EvilClive again & managed to get along side on the outside of a bend, but that was about as close as I got. Then got too enthusiastic on the accelerator exiting the right hander at the top of the hill & slammed myself front on into the wall. Car now suspension damaged & over 8 seconds back, but managed to get the gap back to just over 2 seconds (again gaining at over a second per lap) when I managed to nose dive into the same barrier ::).
That was the end of the race for me, but I still found time to do exactly the same thing one more time, finally giving up a place this time :'(

That 1st half close quaters stuff is exactly why I'm here, really enjoyed that & hope you did too Evil :)

Congratulations for the first 3 ° good race ;D.
Vedenvo turn during practice John was impossible :o to take it.
During qualiche I could not schendere under 1.44 :'(.

At the start I had a good pecato with 10 FPS that I could not figure out where to brak :wheelchair:e.
I ask FORGIVENESS AT ALL :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: !!
After I was behind the pilots (simon Loynes -phspok -Geoffers, go to Monaco with the same machine is complicated (hope I have not touched anyone because I have seen many lag).

I apologize also to Legzy that I could not avoid contact !!! :scared:

I hope for the next race I pc new arrivals or are in crisis  .

Ciaoo to the next and congratulations to all.

Hard luck Federico.  I wondered what had happened.

I let John have his first place spot back as we went up the hill, I could probably have bottled him up for a while bt that wouldn't have done the Soggy cause any good and had the potential to do it a great deal of harm.

I enjoyed watching John slide his way between the Armco on lap one.  Don't know what he was up to after that as he was out of sight.

I figured the one-two was ours to lose and just settled down to keep it on the tarmac.  Over the first half of the race, John was pulling away from me at the same rate that I was getting away from Evil and that suited me fine!  Evil had Legzy to contend with which probably kept him off my back.

My soft tyres started to go at about half distance but they stayed ok to the end.

Grats to John and WD Evil on the Soggy podium lockout.

Thanks to Matt for organising it.

I was enjoying that, in close proximity to Legzy and Evil for the first half of the race, until my screen froze exiting Loews. A few seconds later it came back and I was nose first into the wall with broken suspension. I had also lost 5 places - hope everyone got past my car ok.

That put me near the back of the field but I hobbled on, only to get another brief freeze a few laps after. When it happened a third time with John coming up behind me it was clearly too dangerous for me to carry on, so I quit to the pits.

On quitting the game there was a pop-up notification on screen informing me of driver updates, so i'm guessing that is what was triggering the loss of focus from the game. I've turned off that pop-up notification, so hopefully it won't be happening again.

Congrats podium.

Qualified a decent 4th so hoped for a great fight up front.

What a let down for me that turned out to be, once again my race ruined by the ffb disappearing on the grid for race start when it's too late for me to get at the controls menu  :'(
Didn't know it had happened until turn 1, hence me clipping Geoffers ahead. Think he would have caught it except I got rear ended back into him forcing a full spin and pile up by the impatient lot behind me  ::)
I lost about 5 places and nearly quit as couldn't see me being Able to keep it out of the barriers with no ffb, but I stuck with it.
As it turned out I then got stuck behind Matts red bus 914 for 7 laps and nearly had 50 accidents trying to avoid his rear end when he kept braking like a granny  ;D
On lap 7 there was a sudden load of lagging going on and I was sandwiched between Matt and Simon so I did a Rosberg and pulled over on the way down to casino as thought I'd have to quit. But the lagging disappeared instantly  ???
So then had to recatch the pack behind Geoffers and Fed. The 3 of us then systematically turned our 914s into 50 pence pieces bouncing off barriers  :-[ each in turn.
Later found myself behind Simon for 6th and harassed him for several laps before he seemed to get on the marbles and Armco in the tunnel and I was through  :)
Finished 6th amazingly considering I nearly quit twice through hardware woes. :o my laptimes were 4 secs a lap slower than qually without the ffb..woeful  :(

Post by: EvilClive on January 15, 2015, 11:06:21 PM +0000
Talk about lucky!!! ::)

Fluked a one run qually lap and with a 1:47 got myself mid pack, which was better than expected. race plan was to keep it clean and hope to pick up places as Monaco always appears to be a place of attrition ( at least it is in GPL).

I got caught by a slow staring car in front of me off the grid..maybe that was Frederico having probs?? Almost rear ended him and jinked sideways  the got swamped by the horde of Porkers screaming up the inside. I had no option but to stick my car right around the outside line at St Devote and just as I was about to nail the gas someone decided to throw a road block across the inside 2/3rds of the track.
It seems that the only gap through the melee was at the end of my bonnet  ;D, so I closed my eyes and went for it, and the car shot through like a wet bar of soap.

I did not dare look at how many places I had gained until I was going through the tunnel with Snr Dan in close attendance............3rd place!!!!! around Monaco.    :shifty:  woohoo. I immediately revised my race plan and employed the Hiki Waza tactics book of cunning ploys.
#27b around Monaco if you have the lead just make sure you keep it clean and smooth and above all, get off the corners fast even if you are slow in.

The rest of the race was an exercise in frustrating anyone faster than me who wanted to progress. I had 3rd step on the rostrum and I was determined not to give it up easily. Snr Dan was trying to find a way past my new wide bodied Porsche with flared wheel arches and large wing mirrors and he was definitely faster at some points...but nowhere that he could make a pass  ;).
I thought that Dan had also read my Waza training book when he nudged me into a spin  lol. But I avoided stalling the engine ( which is what usually happens!) and nailed the gas to spin the car around and face the right way, Dan was gentleman enough to allow me to keep my precious 3rd spot. I think he made an error a lap or so later because he suddenly dropped away, to be repleced by a hard charging Legzy.
Legzy was quite plainly much faster than I was with a clear track, but I had to drive a very defensive race and go just fast enough to prevent him getting a chance to pass. Like he said there were one or two times when he almost got into position but I managed to cling on.
There was zero chance of me catching either John or Clive, but as the race progressed I felt more confident of holding 3rd. Especially when Legzy opted to test the armco and give me a few laps rest on at least 3 occasions. The last few laps were just a case of keeping my concentration and getting the car to the flag.

Like I said at the start "lucky", but after the luck I had to work for the silverware and at any other track would probably have been passed by about 6 cars!!  lol

Race to forget for me, only good thing was I got to the finish, quite a feat for me at Monaco.

Have to apologise to Simon, I think it was me that put you out of the race. You seemed to have pulled over through the tunnel only to come back onto the racing line leaving me nowhere to go. I braked but still ran into your car. I waited, only to let Matt past just as you quit.

Congrats to the massed ranks of the Soggies, superb performance.  :notworthy:

Cheers Geoffers, I'm beginning to like 2015!   ;D

Looking at John's last two laps, I wonder how much fuel he had in at the finish?  Or perhaps he just backed off to avoid lapping people.   ::)

Thanks ;D One of these days I'll master the art of getting a good start...

Looking at John's last two laps, I wonder how much fuel he had in at the finish?  Or perhaps he just backed off to avoid lapping people.   ::)

Yes, as Geoff said - I'd backed off as it looked like him and Matt were having fun. I wanted to stay near enough to watch but I got too close and Geoff, being the gentleman he is, pulled to the side to let me through.

That was fun. I am not sure why I was so slow compared to others, maybe my setup was too cautious but I was in danger
of swapping ends with any more front grip... I would like to try someone elses setup, maybe I am just carp at rear engines  :whistling:
After people had some "accidents" I ended up in 5th place with a train behind headed by Simon, who was faster, but not enough
to make an easy pass. Eventually I couldn't stand the hateful stares from MJ so moved over to let Simon and the others past
Then there were some more accidents and I gained a couple of places to the finish. I almost slowed to let Geoffers through again
but hey, one lot of martyrdom is enough for one day.

Mark,
Pressing Alt F buttons at the same time should reset the FF even while on the grid. The hard part is remembering the key combo when the FF stops.

I should think that finding a spare hand to press the keys whilst wrestling with the thing would be a trick too!
