Season 28 Works Trophy - Round 2 - Stardust

Round 2 will be run at Stardust, a new track for UKGPL.

Stardust International Raceway was an auto racing track in Spring Valley, in the Las Vegas Valley. It featured a flat, 3-mile (4.8 km), 13-turn road course, and a quarter-mile drag strip. It was built in 1965 by the Stardust Hotel and Casino to attract high rollers to the hotel.  In 1966 it began hosting the season finale of the Can-Am championship. In 1968 the USAC Championship Car series held a race at Stardust. The hotel was sold in 1969, and the new owners largely abandoned the track.

Some very quick times up front.  I struggled tonight, a long way off the pace and then after being lapped I put a wheel in the sand in a braking zone and couldn't stop.  Hit the barrier and lost a wheel. Race over  :(

Hope to see you back soon Andreas, get well soon.

As for my race, it was a race of two halves. The first half was extremely cack-handed. I lost count of the amount of times I went off, spun and generally made a mess of things. The second half was somewhat better, with a few errors as opposed to a lot. Glad to have made the finish at least and grab some points. Congrats to all finishers :).

Lost the engine lap 20, went away, came back for final lap. Heartbreak, Iestyn, very sporting (and a bit funny) GT. :D

Grats RF.

Grats to Robert and the podium , some very fast cars up front!!

First apologies...... to Doni, I had to take the pitlane when I got a tank slapper out of the final turn and it was the pits or the armco!!  :o. The armco option might have collected you too!!

Also sorry to Ray when I ran wide late in the race and I think he followed me in sympathy or avoidance at the end of the back straight?? I felt very guilty and let you retake the place.  :-\

Some good racing until I bent something on the polos late in the race, and that prompted several more visits to the sand trap.

Bit of a lonely race at the back, got lapped twice and couldn't find the speed I had early on. Roll on Zandvoort and Albi.

Congrats Rob, Bob, and Iestyn! That was a wild one! I had a great deal of fun.

It made my day to lead a few laps in the Honda. My crazy banzai charge into the lead was a bit thrilling. I had to tell myself to "calm down" shortly after lap 1 before I committed hari kari. In hindsight that wasn't a very wise move. I probably should have gave 3rd back to Iestyn and shadowed the leaders for as long as I could. By hitting so many polos the first several laps, my speed and consistency were diminished. Without heavy pressure from behind, I doubt I would have hit so many.

In my opinion the finishing order was what it should have been. Rob had an excellent pace, Bob had the best car, and Iestyn drove the best race. I didn't quite have the speed to be a real contender for the podium. Iestyn's fueling error and Bob's late spins could have gave me a shot at 2nd place had I been consistent, but Iestyn and especially Rob beat up their cars as bad as I did mine. Very impressive Rob to get those lap times with such a damaged car. It looks like Iestyn may have given up some speed too with his damage. You should have whipped us all Bob with that fancy Brabham.

Iestyn! 2:27 for a final lap time. That completely ruined your consistency. I got a good laugh when I saw in the replay your spin in the final turn. You got so lucky that you had a few drops of fuel left. I'm glad you didn't get stranded there. I had no idea what was happening on the last lap. I started falling apart the last few laps. Unsure of my car probably helped put me into a mild state of confusion before the race had ended. I thought Iestyn was waiting for me or something. I didn't know why. No reason to pity me and he never made any mistake that caused me problems. Had I known Iestyn ran out of fuel, I may have passed him. I glad I didn't though. He did me a big favor leaving me the outside line after the start. That was a very nice showing of skill and patience. I had hoped to slow earlier than I did but Dean got such a great start there was little room behind me. I had hoped Iestyn could get in front of me and come across on a wider line. I'm glad I could return the favor later.

I really enjoyed that race. I had more fun driving the Honda here than I ever did with the Eagle or Ferrari. With some more practice and some minor changes to the setup, the Honda ought to make a nice improvement in performance here. With some more experience, these races could become even more fun.

Thanks for the fun guys. I'm very pleased to be let in all this action. When I can see the possibilty of having even more fun in the Works series, I may continue to race with you all, as long as I am allowed. Long live UKGPL!

the pits or the armco!!

Check out lap 1 Clive! That's how you use the pits. I thought I could pull off that stunt without wrecking anybody else. I wasn't sure about myself though. I had a detrimental effect on Iestyn's concentration but I can live with that. The laugh he got from it, was likely greater than the inconvenience. :)

That was an action packed event, and an extremely lucky win for me...

Quali was great with a huge PR. The Cooper is such a nice handling car. Bob got the better start, and had to concede at T1. Then he spun out of the last turn, and I chose the wrong (right) side to avoid him, going off and both Greg and Iestyn went by. Later Bob had a good run at the backstraight, and I did give too much room, stayed too much at the right and hit polo's, and spun. In the aftermath ran over some polo's and went wide, losing a lot of trackposition and time. Had to slot in behind Dean.

Robert Fleurke - spotters reporting:
minor problems with right rear tire.
medium problems with right rear suspension.

Was really annoyed by those mistakes, the steering was still straight but car felt tight. Still was determined to make the best of the race and to get back to the leaders. Could pass Dean who went slightly wide at T2 and I had a good early exit. Then was behind Arf, set myself up to pass him at the s/f straight. But twice went too eager on the throttle and went sideways. Then got a good run out of T7 at the backstraight, there was a gap at the left and tried to stay left as possible. Almost cleared him when I felt a touch sending me into a tankslapper, and Arf sadly went off...but glad to see he could continue, with some damage tho...

After that hit some polo's again a few times, messing up my RF.

By then was 4th again trying to close up with the leaders. Despite the car turning difficult especially at the left turns, the steering was still straight, and my laptimes were still respectable or even good. Even tho Bob seemed to have the best racepace.

Got closer to Greg who ran great in the Honda, and after some laps got by him when he went sideways out of the last turn. Then Bob spun at T7, and was second about 6s behind Iestyn I think. Was able to close the gap, thought Iestyn was managing his lead, but at some point I did suspect he ran out of fuel. Stayed patient and got by him in the penultimate lap taking the checkers first!

Again, extremely lucky win with the mistakes and damage, and others' bad luck. Well done Bob salvaging P2, you had the pace to win m8! ;) Also kudos to Iestyn running great in the BRM, and Greg for running great in the Honda, but had preferred you took away some pts of Iestyn who must be my biggest rival

Well done all finishers, tough track with the polo's. Still to me it's a great track for close racing, which was proved last night. Very drivable and raceable track. Commiserations to the retirements...

Thanks all for racing! :)

Good race that, even though this was a great chance for a win (due my better car I have to admit), was please with 2nd.  Tough luck Iestyn, but I still doff my cap to you, as Jethro remarked unbelievable pace in the BRM.  Greg and Robert weren't too shabby either.

I was quite surprised by the car choices and was pleased to see I was somewhere near competitive.  I actually blew the engine on my qual lap and coasted over the line, so I knew I had a fair amount more pace, but given I was over a second clear in second and unlikely to challenge Robert's lap, I tested my race setup.

The race was going pretty good until about lap 24 when, right on Iestyn's gearbox I seemed to brake too late for the corner leading into the back straight (curve).  As soon as it went I knew it wouldn't be a quick spin, but it didn't help that I spun off again when rejoining  :scared: , losing 11 secs.  My response was to drive faster, setting my FL but also bringing several spins.  Don't think I would've caught Robert anyway.

Cheers,

Bob.

Grats on a good win, Robert!  The end of your misfortunes?  Could be...  :)

Good run by Bob who, for once, wasn't pounded off the road by yours truly.

And Izzy scores a podium thanks to Greg checking up at the line.

My, my, Iestyn...  That was so unfortunate.  But for a couple of litres of petrol, eh?  After blowing up my P115, I watched the race with great interest from assorted viewpoints and for the last two laps, rode along with you.  I was noting that you were changing-up very early and sparing the revolutions.  It then dawned me, 'Good Lord!  He's running out of fuel!'  Soon, the tacho needle started to flutter and the engine began to splutter.  That was an agonizing last two laps to ride onboard with you.  Hard luck hardly describes it.

Great run by Greg in the Honda.  I ran this car here at Stardust late last year and couldn't bust into the 35's.  Here you go and score mid-33's.  I doff my hat, sir.

I like Stardust but in the limited events I've run here, didn't do very well.  Definitely lacking speed.  With that prospect in mind, it wasn't a hard choice to opt for the BRM again.  I was surprised at how well it ran and handled in qualifying so was buoyed for the start.  That went well and I ultimately hooked up in a nifty train of cars comprising Arf, Evil, Rocket and Sam.  That was really keen and the pleasure with running well in such good company helped assuage my bruised ego when the BRM engine failed.  I was pleased, too, to net a new PB in the low 36's and at least score some minor points.

Zandvoort next and I really suck there.  Looks like the BRM again...

Edit: BTW, I found the Works server replay cap at...

Hehe...  Good one, Martin.

My troubles with Zandvoort are many.  It seems that I can go out for a qualifying run with, say, 4-5 laps worth of fuel and start to get the hammer down straight away.  The first couple of flyers are out there in Nowheresville.  Then, on the last or 2nd last lap, I'll carve all manner of time out of the previous markers...and I mean by a full second or more...but with not the slightest idea why.  They all felt the same to me.

Additionally, I find it really tiring what with all the switchbacks and near-constant sawing away on the steering wheel.  For me, this is just a points run.

I appreciate you not punishing me for my transgression. The report makes it clear to me, that using the pit lane in an unusual situation is not condoned. I thought GPL might DQ me for it, and that kind of move would likely have me banned from real racing. :(

It wasn't as dangerous as it appeared though. I had a few laps practicing where I'd get sideways coming out of the final turn and I could keep the throttle down but it would force the car so far left that I'd have to take the pit lane to avoid hitting the pit wall. So I had actually taken that line a few times before. As soon as I was in the lane, I used prib to check that I could come back onto the track without colliding.

There's no real advantage to gain by doing what I did but it did allow me to easily take 2 positions when I was unsure of where to go. I was a little greedy. That was the only thing I knew I could do that would keep me from losing momentum. In the end, it probably hurt my overall race. I could have kept the car undamaged without the pressure from behind, resulting in a much better car late in the race.

I apologize. I never intended to or do intend to make such practices anything other than rare.

Take care guys.
