Post by: Rainier on April 04, 2015, 03:07:01 PM +0100
Season 28 Amateurs Trophy - Round 3 – Spa (new)

To mark the 50th anniversary of the 1965 Formula 1 season we will run the 10 original championship races and for round 3 we visit Spa Francorchamps
The original triangular shaped course, which was designed in 1920 by Jules de Their and Henri Langlois Van Ophem, used public roads between the towns of Spa, Malmedy and Stavelot.  The course was extremly fast and was made even faster in 1939 with the introduction of the famous Eau Rouge section.  The circuit was completely revised and shortened for the 1981 Belgian Grand Prix but it is the faster 8.761 mile version of the track that we will use for this race.

The 8.761 mile version of the circuit was used between 1946 and 1970 and whilst corners like Eau Rouge, Burnenville and particularly Masta; presented the drivers with exceptional challenges the circuit was very dangerous and claimed the lives of many drivers.

Please note: We will not use the original Papyrus version of the circuit, we will use the version released in December 2014 by the Spa67 Team.

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.
This season, races are to be run at 60 frames per second – please use this patch 60fpsV2newmod (ftp://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/Replays/Archive/Season27/60fps/).

Drivers must complete 50% of each race to score.

Managed to snatch pole from Billy in the last few minutes of qually by 4 hundredths.  Got a good careful start and kept the lead.  Don't know what happened behind but for some reason I had a 30 second lead after 2 laps.  The race was very easy on gear changes so I managed to avoid missing gears and my RFB was reasonably controlled.  All was going well until the last lap when I ran out of fuel on the approach to Masta.  Did a shiftR and set off again being careful not to crash on cold tyres.  I expected to have enough time to make a S&G before the finish but Billy put in a stunning last lap to pip me to the line.  Grats Bill I didn't expect you to be able to close down that much in the last lap.  Well done.

Results up, replay posted, if you want to submit incident reports you should now be able to do so (had to tweak the event to make it play nice).

Hopefully all was good tonight, any issues to speak of, i.e. lag/packet loss? I kept a close watch and it seemed all well behaved our side.... :)

A very eventful race.
Thought I had done enough for pole but Phil snuck in a fast lap near the end.
I’m guessing several drivers didn’t practice that much. The new 67 track is quite different from the original papyrus. The Eau Rouge section is really tricky & there are more corners you can take flat. The real difficulty I find is the speeds are so great it is too easy to get a wheel off line & the results are usually a disaster.
Lap 1 didn’t work out well. I was able to line up a pass on Kai on the run down to Masta. I had to use the left hand edge of the track. From what I can see of the replay I had good overlap but a wheel on the grass  nudged me into Kai’s path. I think Kai could continue but he lost out somewhere just after. At this point I was 2nd to last, having used a Shift R & stop & go.
15 laps is a long race. As the race progressed the cars ahead dropped out. All I saw of Walt was a wheel rolling down the road after Blanchimont. I worked my way up to 2nd but Phil (who seems to have sorted out the right foot braking) was almost 2 miles ahead).
On the last lap Phil’s lead was rapidly diminishing in Prib but he got going again enough to take the flag. I had the hammer down on the last lap. I saw Phil’s car in the pit lane & assumed he’d stopped after the start finish. So a bit of a surprise to see I’d won.
Bad luck Phil on short fuelling – you really should have won. (Subject to moderation).
I expect the usual competition to be back in the mix at Clermont – a track that I struggle with.

Congratulations to Billy for the Victory and Phill for 2. Place. You two was just too fast on this Track. I had no chance to get close to you. So I am very satisfied with the 3rd place and I Hope it works better in the next race.

Congrats Billy, Phil and Kai! I had a nice race early with Bernie, Dave, Rog and Fabio. I was playing follow the leader as best that I could. Then after each of them suffered some sort of bad luck, I was in P2. Not bad considering I had started in last place. So just bring it home right?

Unfortunately, my race was finished after I made two silly unforced errors. My first mistake was at Blanchimont. I could see on the prib that Billy was catching me. So I decided to take Blanchimont flat out. I missed the apex slightly, and I could not get the car turned like in Qually. My second mistake was at Stavelot. No excuse for my second mistake, except that it was fun while it lasted.

I watched the rest of the race from Phil's camera. I wanted to see how to improve my laptime, and I was rooting for Phil because Billy is leading the championship. At first I thought that Phil was slowing down to let Billy catch up, but then it occurred to me that he might be low on fuel. What an unpredictable race. I am happy for Billy, but we all have more work to do, if we want to catch him in the point standings.

Hopefully I can keep the car in one piece at the beautiful Clermont-Ferrand.

au revoir,
Walter

Congrats Billy, unlucky Phil - although you had clearly had a good run up until that point.

No, I hadn't practiced specifically for this event;   but I've been at this new track a number of times fairly recently so that would not have made much difference.
It was clear from the start in qually that the front row were quite a bit quicker round here.  My first lap which I was fairly happy with was pretty much 10seconds of the pace of this grid!

Not watched it all back yet,  but from 'memory' the start & first 1/2 laps seemed ok to me,  I think I even made (or rather - given)  a place or two.
Then was trying (in my mind) to keep it tidy/not impede whoever was about to pass me & then I slipped off the edge of the track near the house on the bend, on the hill.
Thought I'd got away with it & could drive through the woods for a rejoin,  but it turned over in slow motion.  In  my mind,  I could hear Cleveland's voice 'No..no..no..no!'.  So that was the shift-R out of the way on lap1.

At some point,  Billy was behind me & reeling me in.    There would be no contest;  so just tried to give him the inside line at the hairpin & let him past;  with the hope of trying to hang on in the slipstream & maybe make up the 1/2 mile to the guys ahead.

Then a couple of minor mistakes & he was 1/2 a mile ahead.     I think I drove through some bits left on the track by Fabio as he exited;  then a couple of corners later the bulletproof Lotus engine let go.   Couldn't even make it to 50% distance.    Not that it matters;   but presumably as Fabio was ahead at the start of the lap;  he gets  the position by GPL countback.

As it turned out,  15 laps did mean a long race.  I had to do some work stuff at 22:30,  so was probably just as well I had an early exit.

Cheers all,
See you next time out.

Dave.

A strange trend is emerging in the Amateur Trophy series. The car that led the most laps in each race did not win the race. Correct me if I'm wrong. I was leading at E. London until I had a screen freeze. Dave Curtis was leading at Monaco until he caught lapped traffic. Phil was leading at Spa until he ran out of petrol. This trend makes me worry for whomever is leading at Clermont-Ferrand!

No need for me to worry then  ;D
