Season 28 Professionals Trophy - Round 3 – Spa 67

To mark the 50th anniversary of the 1965 Formula 1 season we will run the 10 original championship races and for round 3 we visit Spa Francorchamps
The original triangular shaped course, which was designed in 1920 by Jules de Their and Henri Langlois Van Ophem, used public roads between the towns of Spa, Malmedy and Stavelot.  The course was extremly fast and was made even faster in 1939 with the introduction of the famous Eau Rouge section.  The circuit was completely revised and shortened for the 1981 Belgian Grand Prix but it is the faster 8.761 mile version of the track that we will use for this race.

The 8.761 mile version of the circuit was used between 1946 and 1970 and whilst corners like Eau Rouge, Burnenville and particularly Masta; presented the drivers with exceptional challenges the circuit was very dangerous and claimed the lives of many drivers.

Please note: We will not use the original Papyrus version of the circuit, we will use the version released in December 2014 by the Spa67 Team.

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

This season, races are to be run at 60 frames per second – please use this patch 60fpsV2newmod (ftp://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/Replays/Archive/Season27/60fps/).

Drivers must complete 50% of each race to score.

well well, did not expect 4th.... Killed my engine early doors with a downshift to 1st entering la source off the start, and a crash towards end of lap 1 when I was trying too hard to catch the pack in the distance. That meant I was down on power the whole race, i think my best lap was c. 3:46. On lap 4 or 5 I past a couple of cars in quick succession, assumed they'd had a coming together. Norm however, soon roared back into the race and we had a close, fair fight for all but the last 3 laps. It seemed like Norm was either being far too gentlemanly into the corners or didn't trust his car, as he clearly had way more power than me - on the 2 occaissons he got past, i was able to just retake it on the draft :-)  Good fun, sorry we couldn't see it all the way to the flag....

WD to Axel, Doni and Dave for beating me, very hard luck to Mr F who should have too....

Arf

Sorry Ray, I thought you know, you have to lift if you are on the outside into Stavelot...

Doni shame you messed LaSource in the penultimate lap, had lots of plans how to get you in the last... ;D

Damn Robert! you should not try fastest laps with such a lead ::)

I have amended the event so that it no longer has pending moderation, this should then allow incidents as necessary to be submitted.

Quali was great, with a PR for me and Axel, and the race started OK. Took a defensive line towards Blanchimont on Lap 1, and this put Axel in a vulnerable position and he lost touch with me. Surely was entitled to do that, but it was not my aim to lose Axel. My plan was to draft past eachother towards the checkers.

TBH the setup was superb, the tirepressures were on the edge, but held on, just enough grip left. First 2/3 of the race was pretty good, running 39s in clean air, but lost focus and also my FPS dropped for 1-2 laps. Went off at Carriere and was extremely lucky not to crash out...normally I take care of the engine, having a safe lead, but felt like attacking my (clean air) WR in the last 2 laps.  ::)

All looked good for my 35th win in my 100th UKGPL race, but as often, pride comes before the fall, and I blew up out of Eau rouge in the last lap. The engine temp wasn't that much on the edge, but I abused the car too much, with some speedshifts slipping in and also overrevving I think...

Couldn't be happier to see Axel picking up the win after my demise, well deserved! :) Also grats to Doni and David for podium! You always have to be there at the end ;) Good job finishers as well.

Commiserations to the retirements, also too bad the likes of Iestyn, Tristan and Clive weren't there to race...

3m37.1 with some tow and balloon tires :P

For me I go as high as tirepressure as long I can take Malmedy/Carriere flat out without going wide/spinning out. The gain in time by straightline speed and keeping more momentum weigh out loss of grip dramatically at this track, as most parts are simply flat out...

Nice Race- only managed 3:43, but i lost my concentration seeing a yellow flag,
overbreaking, in and over the armco. fortunately landed on wheels, all wheels on the car,
was already happy. First notice, power down a bit. Ok. Finish it slower.

Then noticed the fuel leak - just managed to end the lap :(

Congrats to Axel on the win!  Most likely it was in the bag as I didn't really feel that I'd prevail.  I was just tagging along hoping for a break and got it.  Trouble was, it was a bad one.

Poor Robert!  Marching off into the distance...running as Tail Gunner Joe in the pack pursuing..., I could see his BRM getting smaller and smaller to ultimately disappear altogether.  Then a cruel motor failure.  Robbery!

From half-distance onwards, I was flagging badly.  Just wishing it was over and being really bummed to see that six or seven laps were still to be run.  With a lap and a half to go, I nearly fell off the road on the approach to La Carierre as I fumbled for my water bottle.  Lucky to have survived that.  Then going into La Source and ready to start the last lap, I completely fudged the change-downs with the paddles and ended up in reverse.  Still puzzled at that gaffe but it fits with what was building.

Sorry to see Ray make a rather sudden and dramatic exit at Stavelot.  I never did quite see what was unfolding there at the time but knew it was a bone cruncher.  Dean fell afoul of the tricky railing in Les Combes.  Dean...  I trailed you for much of the race and several times, your Brabham winked out or stuttered badly.  Connection issues yesterday?

All in all, I consider myself lucky to have scooped a podium.

Went off track 4 times in total but amazingly the car kept going. Enjoyed the race with Arf it was always fair. Then I had my 3rd off. Think I was catching Arf again but after the final off with 2 laps to go my car was down on power. Pity we couldn't have raced it out to the end. I could have packed up then as I was 6th & last runner but I had enjoyed it so much I thought no I'll bring this one home. Just as well as I gained a place on the last lap. Well done the podium. Spa never disappoints. ;D

I do but I didn't. I wanted to leave room and lost focus for a second and that was that, totally my own undoing Axel.

However no complaints from me as I took the Lotus for a spin round the Targa instead and came away with a new PB. This was an added bonus to go with the Spa PB I got at the end of qualifying with a little help from a tow by yourself for most of the lap. Thanks.

Grats to the podium of yourself, Doni and Dave.

Great job Doni, you could have won it too! And basically was too aggressive on the engine, not setup wise, but driving wise. During the race it went through my mind, but just was too greedy, when there was no need too...in general I'm very lucky so no complaints here ;)

Phil posted the race last week, but it wasn't stickied until last night, that might be the reason you have missed it  ???

It's def not your age, on track you look as young as Iestyn.  8)

Nice and cool race for me !

I started 9th, Bastian overtook me at the start so I was in last position.
But I finished 3rd ...without overtaking (on the track) any other car  :D

This I can agree on. Pressure soaked up from me for 10+ laps at Zandy no problem! :P

Shame I missed this one, as I could have given Rob a run for his money!  ;)

But it looks like it turned into a classic race! Very typical of the era :)
