Title: UKGPL Season 28 (2015) 69 Extra Trophy - Nürburgring - May 31
Post by: Cookie on May 29, 2015, 09:29:25 AM +0100
Season 28 – Round 6 - 69 Extra Trophy - Nürburgring

For round 6 we visit the "grüne Hölle".  :o
Not much to say about the most challenging permanent track Formula 1 ever raced at...

69X use the 60fpsV1 (ftp://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/Replays/Archive/Season27/60fps/) patch.

The race will be run under INT rules and you have a free car choice.
You can do 1 shift+r with a consecutive stop and go in the pits !

Handicapping
Drivers will have a free car choice
BUT
For the Light drivers: Each car can be driven only once in this season!

Driver lists and explicit rules can be found on the championship page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=480&theme=6)

Race List =   IGOR
Server = UKGPL_8
IP Address = look at IGOR
Race date = 31-05-2015
Qualification Time  = ~20:45  UK time -> 45min
Race Time = race starts at 21:30 UK time
Track = Nürburgring
Variant = 69X
Damage Model = INT
Race length = ~50 min -> 6 laps
Replay = you will get here (ftp://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/Replays/Archive/Season28/69Xtra/)

The red zone will be fully moderated for lap 1 only. For this event the red zone will be from the start to the exit of the Nordkehre on the first lap. Other moderation will be on reported incidents only.  However any incidents that occur in the red zone that are not reported by the drivers will be reported by the moderator.

Please restrict chat to emergency messages only including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 30 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 25 mins of qualifying left.

I recomment for drivers with low spec pc's to use the original Papy track version for 60fps online races!

GLA

WE WILL USE a PASSWORD for the TRAINING SERVER! = 60fpsV1

Good news  :)
Looking forward to this race although I should probably get some practice in as I haven't driven the GPL version of the 'Ring in quite some time..

While I'm certainly thrilled to have you back in action, Andreas, there is some concern over your remark, 'somewhat'.  Not to pry but I hope that you'll be 100% ASAP.

I hope you have a speedy recovery Andreas. I'm glad you're back.

Did anybody notice the race record for the 67 F1s, 7:40.710. Is that real? I thought the fastest 312 time on Rank was impressive at 7:47! Vinny might beat the 69X cars with a 67 312!? Amazing!

Yeah there is probably a lot of warp times in those early GPL races. It's a shame we can't see what the real race record is though :(.

One could, with time and insanity on their side, go through the race history and see if there are replays!

Waste of an evening  :(
Get jumped at the start only for one of the cars that jumped me to out brake himself and leave me trapped behind him on the grass at T1 - then to make matters worse I get rear-ended by Piero, flipped and have to wait until I'm dead last to be able to Shift-R.
Just approaching Adenau and I've battled up as far as Piero again only for him to loose it and collect me in the process. On my roof again and game over.

Good race for me.  Had a great battle with Jonny O for the second half of the race.  I kept ahead until the second to last corner when he swept by to beat me to the line by a few car lengths.  At times I pulled out a few seconds only to throw the advantage away with a duff gear change.  I'm still pleased, my clutch control is getting better  :thumbup1:

Had Martin in my sights a couple of times but he was just too fast.  Grats on a good result Martin.

Welcome back Andreas;  to a tough one!  Although, maybe some local knowledge helps here?

Realistically, I was only going to be racing myself tonight.
Took to the practice server earlier & whatever time I ended up with would be a PB!  Although, it was taking about 4x cars per lap...
Come the 'practice race' was pleased to have made the entire 3-lapper  in the same car.

Forward to tonight & could have done without being tangled up in other's misfortune from the start; was sure the steering was bent but apparently not too much apparently.
As I was then misplaced/gained a few positions;  tried to hand them back - but probably with mixed success.

Later on, I had a small gap back to Doni/Bernie; but lost that with a spin to the bank.    In hindsight;  maybe I should not have pulled over/waited for Doni to pass;  as Bernie nipped past too.  Then 3 of us were circulating together for a while. No slight intended to Bernie,  but presumably, Doni had some issues as Bernie/I were able to nip ahead & edge away.

Then some close running with Bernie for a while;  until he had a slight spin that let me past.  All going well,  but the last lap was bad.   Hindsight is a wonderful thing;  I now know that I should have taken my shift-R early in the lap;  rather than battling with a non-steering car for most of it & after too many more crashes;  eventually made it after one of the rear wheels fell off.

Still never mind;  managed to get 67 seconds off my PB;  so pleased with that at least.
Parts of the track do remain more familiar now [crashed here before... and here... and here...]

Cheers all,
Dave.

First of all GRATS to the podium and especially to Greg for such marvellous times!
Great job by Andreas on his Lieblingsstrecke ;)

The Ring is not a track I like, as it does not allow any Verschnaufpause, so with more laps my mistakes got worse...
I made them in the places where I know I have to be extra carefull ::)

I am happy that 16 drivers finished in the same lap and the server kept it all together!

The 69X mod has a BUG, it makes double driver entry numbers, wich costs extra work to import the reports...

Upcoming Monza is more à mon gout  ;D

Sorry to hear of Cookie's Gout, which can be painful when one has to 'leg it.'  And thanks Phil.  BTW, my mirrors were available, but it takes two to Tango and I preferred to Waltz it home ahead,  at a place where dicing is dicy.  And where I'd had to jink it near the start, or help create another lap 1 roadblock!  I hope those who often twist enjoy that.  It wasn't the fashion for 1969, what with no-one involved taking the lead.

Anyway, with such perils precluded,  I emerged towards the nub of the Nurb, and forged fourth for a time.  My car was handling with great refinement, allowing me to spin with precision, at the same spot, on both lapse 1 & 2.  Whence, humongous proportions of skill were thowed and flowed sixth, through man and machinery thereafter.  Not always in unison, but sufficient to reach the finish line without major damage.  The real race lasted over 2 hours in
gyration. :o

Get jumped at the start only for one of the cars that jumped me to out brake himself and leave me trapped behind him on the grass at T1

Guilty  sorry about that, I got a good launch and what with this place being difficult to o/take...  I was going okay into T1 but had to keep to the outside of another car and strayed onto the grass which caused the dreaded pirouette...still I'd hope to conduct myself better.

My first qual lap (also the first out of the pits) was actually good enough for P2 but for some reason GPL didn't register it (assume the same for all?), but I had feared I start last so 5th not too bad.

After my T1 incident I got a bit close to the barriers at T3 and was punted round (actually thought I'd given enough room), restarted dead last.  I caught a few cars and managed to get past as a result of others issues and genuine o/takes (thanks for giving me room).  Quite a few cars seemed to be warping at the start = I was warping, but this seemed to settle down through the race, anyone else have that?

Pleased to finish 5th, had too many incidents to do better, but happy with my FL...albeit 7 secs from Greg's!

Cheers,

Bob

No worries - I was a tad worked up when I quit out as I'd spent 3 hours turning the 63 around from wallowing pig to pleasure to drive!

During my very short 1/2 lap of racing I had the absolute bejebus scared out of me by Johny-o as he was warping around like a pinball  :o
He vanished just after Flugplatz and after waiting a few seconds and he didn't re-appear I assumed he had disco'd so pressed on again. Just before Foxhole he reappeared again behind me!

I tried to put up a bit of a fight but you were far too fast Bob.  I definitely didn't yield but I didn't take a defensive line into Bergwerk and gave you an opportunity to come up the inside (if you hadn't taken it I'd have carried on fighting) but you didn't need a second invitation and once you were past you disappeared.

Yes I did, Wasn't sure if it was me or the server so I just persevered and hoped I wasn't going to be discoed!

Not much to say from here except that it was great to see Andreas back in the wars and going great guns.  Tommie wicked fast in the same Eagle I ran.  How ever does he do it?  I just larked around at the back for fun til the eyeballs caved(much as they did the day before in an oAo race).

Greg...  What are you smokin', bud?  Fab stuff!  :)

Thanks Axel. Yes, Andreas did great! I spoiled his excellent return though. That's the only thing about my race that didn't make me happy. At one point I felt a little like I was kicking a man while he was down. Sorry Andreas!

I think it's my favorite track too. Targa Florio is too long to ever feel I can learn it's nuances very well.

I drove with a little bit of anger and a great deal of determination. I'm a bit angry with myself lately. I've been making small mistakes that have resulted in catastrophe and caused accidents.:( Plus, I inherited a 16 second lead at Nurburgring after two laps on Saturday, only to make the small mistake of lifting a little late for Flugplatz and rolling the car over on the banking. That's after I just learned to do 7:59s with the 67 312. I was so pleased to pull off a 7:59 in Q for a Pro race, only to toss a race victory on lap 3! Nurburgring can be such a cruel place at times, no wonder many have called it Hell.

Immediately after starting to practice for this race Saturday, I became determined. Jackie Ickx had the record on my computer with 7:42.8 or 7:43.8. That was the first goal I was determined to complete. The second one was beating that erroneous 67 312 time on UKGPL. UKGPL is too cool to have the fastest lap at great place like Nurburgring be ficticious. Now, the fastest UKGPL lap at Nurburgring is legitimate! :) The third thing I was determined to do was get a lap in the 7:30s. Since I couldn't do it in qualifying, I decided near the end of lap 2 to do it as quickly as I possibly could in the race. I tried to drive as fast as possible from lap 3 until the end when I finally got it done. I thought to myself several times, "you're putting an easy win in jeopardy trying to go this fast!" So I gave it just about everything I had the entire race, the first two laps opening a comfortable lead on Andreas and the last 4 laps hellbent on breaking 7:40.

The Ring is not a track I like, as it does not allow any Verschnaufpause, so with more laps my mistakes got worse...
I made them in the places where I know I have to be extra carefull ::)

You did well on the opening lap! You, I, Andreas, and Ray seemed to be only ones that managed to have a clean lap 1. Clive didn't do bad either except for a quick spin in one of the slowest sections of the track. The long straight does allow a little
Verschnaufpause. I took a sip of tea on the straight on every lap. :)

I am happy that 16 drivers finished in the same lap and the server kept it all together!

That's great! I was surprised to see so many finishers while watching the last several minutes of the race. I got a laugh seeing Tommie qualifying his lowly Eagle, but then I thought he might do well because of attrition. You should have taken the 49 Tom. You'd have probably looked pretty good with 400 hp available, even without wings. 260hp is somewhat of a joke in this mod.

It's interesting how patience and consistency worked through the race. The top 4 finishers were all consistent. Jonny's patience and consistency moved him up the grid nicely.

Excellent time for Tim and Clive with their 4wds. I thought Tim was in the 49b too, until I watched the replay. I thought you hadn't practiced enough and that I got lucky you weren't well prepared for the race. You and I shattered the records for our respective cars. Excellent on your part. It's a shame your luck was so bad. On my part, it appeared the 49B has been neglected at this track. That's been lessened now. I'm impressed with Clive's performance in the MS84. It may have been better than mine was. I have no idea what I can do with one of those heavy beasts at this track.

Did anybody see Dean and DaveR's top speed with their 4wds? They were close to 190 mph before Antoniusbuche with the M9A! I was limited to 175 mph with my steep wing angles. Most others were the same except the Lotus 63 and MS84 were down 2-3 mph from the conventional cars.

It looks like Bob would have been rather strong with more practice and some good luck.

Overall, it was a great event for me. I struggled a little in qualifying. I abused the engine a great deal in Q with little result for it. I was abusive to the engine through the race but not heavily until the last lap. I made few mistakes. I think I had one quick spin that resulted in me losing less than 5 seconds and 7 or 8 turns throughout the entire race where I needed to slow much more than usual to keep the car on the track. There's still plenty to learn about the 49b here. My setup is good even though I'm not very pleased with my gearing. If you thought I was fast on this race day, I think a 6 speed transmission in the Lotus 49b would gain at least two more seconds. It's cool when a car and a track having you dreaming about parts you'd like.

Greg...  What are you smokin', bud?  Fab stuff!  :)

Of course it was buds, leaves would never do the trick. No, I just got on a good roll, in the zone, had a good rhythm going, whatever you want to call it. That's something I used to do easily but it rarely happens now. That's something I loved most about sim driving. Everything would fade away expect where the car needed to placed on the road or track. I could give 100% and get the feeling I go do no wrong. My heart, coordination, and stamina haven't allowed me to do that well in several years.

Thanks guys. This one was very enjoyable. I look forward to racing here again in the top 69x cars.

For the record I have never been around the Ring in any mod in less than 8 mins, so was well chuffed to dip below into the 7.50's even if it was in a 69x car.

But Greg was in another much faster world. Nice to see a legit above board fastest lap for a change here at UKGPL. Great times Greg and great race. Well deserved mate.

Great report there Greg and a stunning performance in the race!!

As for my MS84 drive ... It might have been better if a) I had practiced and b) I had not had to abort on lap 1 when I got too close to Ronnie under braking.  I was fortunate that there was a gap in the traffic so early in the race and I only dropped a few places.

Once up to pace the MS84 handled quite well and I had chosen it, because I might be able to hussle it into some points if I kept it on the road for the whole race. The rather hastily cobbled setup actually proved to be very good and if I had really banzai'd a lap or two there could well be a five or more seconds to be shaved off. But this was a race about survival and points with a slower car  ;)

I think Axel and Phil thought me a dangerous person to have behind them and allowed me to pass unchallenged  as I moved back up through the field. I was closing on Ronnie twice but had a strange handling anomoly in the same place on 2 consecutive laps when it felt like the car bottomed out and snapped into a 360 spin...(need to look into that one). That left Ronnie off the hook and I was content to pick up some good points in 4th spot.
Really good to see so many finish on the green hell and in cars that would not always have been first choice....especially Tommie in the asthmatic eagle.  ;D

Thanks everyone for the encouragement! I have enjoyed being a moderator this season. My big news is that I will be taking maternity leave from my moderating duties next season! I'm expecting a baby girl in the late September / early October time frame. I am happy that I was able to help out here at the UKGPL even if it was just for a little while. Honestly, I felt like I owed a penance to the league after the shunts that I was guilty of doing. Who knows, I might miss my moderating duties so much that I return in 2016.

I still plan on racing as often as possible in season 29, and I'll try to remember what I learned as a moderator.
