Season 28 – Round 9 - 69 Extra Trophy - Watkins Glen

For round 9 we visit Watkins Glen. After the 65s on Tuesday we take the 3L winged cars to find the limits...

69X use the 60fpsV1 (ftp://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/Replays/Archive/Season27/60fps/) patch.

The race will be run under INT rules and you have a free car choice.
You can do 1 shift+r with a consecutive stop and go in the pits !

Handicapping
Drivers will have a free car choice
BUT
For the Light drivers: Each car can be driven only once in this season!

Driver lists and explicit rules can be found on the championship page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=480&theme=6)

Race List =   IGOR
Server = UKGPL_8
IP Address = look at IGOR
Race date = 12-07-2015
Qualification Time   = ~20:45  UK time -> 45min
Race Time = race starts at 21:30 UK time
Track = Watkins Glen
Variant = 69X
Damage Model = INT
Race length = ~50 min -> 44 corrected! laps
Replay = you will get here (ftp://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/Replays/Archive/Season28/69Xtra/)

The red zone will be fully moderated for lap 1 only. For this event the red zone will be to the exit of the Loop on the first lap . Other moderation will be on reported incidents only.  However any incidents that occur in the red zone that are not reported by the drivers will be reported by the moderator.

Please restrict chat to emergency messages only including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 30 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 25 mins of qualifying left.

I recomment for drivers with low spec pc's to use the original Papy track version for 60fps online races!

I've been practising for this one, but I wish I could have a "Caution - slow vehicle" sticker on the back of my car!  Due to my rustiness (and my button brake), I am probably braking a lot earlier than everyone else, so please be careful in the unlikely event that I might be in front of you.  ::)

The password is right at the top of this thread/page.

But don't sweat it, there will be plenty of opportunities to race another night, where you will surely witness some quality driving like the start of this one  :laugh:  :laugh: :laugh:

Good luck to everyone still running.

Good grief that was hard work! Managed to bag my first pole for a while, and proceeded to have a terrific battle with Greg for the first third of the race and Dean was somehow keeping up in the wingless Lotus.

It was obvious that Greg was faster in race trim and he was all over my gearbox. He made his move after roughly 10 laps into the Loop and took the lead. But, it didn't last as he spun on the last bend a lap later. I couldn't quite avoid the sideways Matra and collected Dean in the process  :(. At least we were all able to continue. Greg once again demonstrating his greater speed, caught me up after not-too-many laps and overtook me into the Loop once more. Instead of sensibly backing off I went into the Loop side-by-side with Greg and of course got me rear wheel onto the grass  ::). Thankfully, I didn't rip a wheel off and tried in vain to catch Greg. Dean was all over my car's backside but he couldn't find a way through either.

Alas, I simply couldn't catch Greg. I remained 4-5 seconds off the lead and simply couldn't close the gap. Big congrats to Greg for a terrific win, and to Dean for a masterful effort in the Lotus to claim 3rd. Congrats to all finishers :).

This PW is only for the practice!
For the race we have an extra PW that shows in the headlines some hours before the race ;)

Had an exiting race after the T3 chaos. Had to s+r and s+g, then on 9th.
Was catching all but the first 3, whose pace was the same... ;D

...a terrific battle with Greg for the first third of the race and Dean was somehow keeping up in the wingless Lotus...

Oh, I would soooo like to take credit for that (and claim a WR by over two seconds).  ;D

But I was in the 49B, not the 49. I just chose the Italian GP graphics (where they ran wingless, apparently) for visibility's sake, so the wings are there as far as the physics is concerned.

As for the first lap contact, sorry to Cookie and others involved (which is pretty much everyone, except for Andreas and Evil, good job avoiding the worst, guys). I had no time to react to you being slower than expected, and didn't think I was that close. Report will be filed, and off to the principal's office I go...  :-[

Congratulations Sam and Dean!

That was a lucky win. The top 4 qualifiers all had the speed for a possible win. I didn't think anybody could get away from me as long as I didn't make a mistake. And I knew I couldn't get away from the other 3 without breaking the tow.

After the early accident left Sam and me alone at the front, I tried to follow Sam as closely as possible down the straights. I was hoping it might increase his top speed so we could get away from Dean. I didn't want to attempt a pass until we were well ahead of Dean. It didn't seem to work. Around lap 10 when Dean was closing on us, I realized we were a little slower than I had been practicing on race fuel. That's when I realized I should have passed Sam earlier when one of his exits from the esses was a little ragged. All I could do was take away the inside entering the Loop. Once I got another opportunity I went for it. It's a shame that the my first time into the 90, without Sam in front to temper my entry, I spun. :( Sam and Dean had no where to go. My apologies. I could have been greedy and tried to use the accident to retake the lead but I waited to see that both of you got going again. I was relieved to see you both carry on. That gave me the opportunity to see if I was a little faster as I had begun to think I was. It didn't take long to get in Dean's slipstream. As I had almost closed the gap Dean spun in the Loop. I was a little late to lift so I couldn't quite scrub off enough speed to keep from bumping Dean. Luckily it seemed to have little effect on either of us. Now was my chance to see if I could catch Sam. When I caught Sam, I didn't wait long to attempt a pass. I didn't want to give Dean another chance to catch us/me. It's a shame I couldn't make a better pass. The second time I denied Sam the inside into the Loop he lost it. I felt bad thinking Sam had wrecked because I didn't get my braking and line as well as I had done before. Once again I was relieved to see Sam hold 2nd place. I thought about slowing down but then I thought Sam is about as far behind me as I was behind him earlier. So I pushed on, interested in seeing if Sam had the pace to catch me. I thought you might be able to get in my slipstream. While also thinking that if you do, it's going to set you up for some very impressive lap times. I held the gap at about 4 seconds for a few laps and then slowly extended it.

I had another scare late in the race lapping Tim and Bastian. Tim let me by easily and I caught Bastian entering the Loop. Bastian slid wide and I tried to get inside but my car kept sliding to the left. I had to slow so much to keep from hitting Bastian that it almost got Tim out of shape. Sorry Tim.

I was flying on the last lap. I got a good tow from Piero. I wasn't expecting him to let me pass. When he moved over near the pit entrance, I went into the 90 too fast once again. Since I had ruined what looked like a great lap, I slowed to let Piero by, so he could complete another lap. The only reason I came up on you so fast Piero was my sector times indicated a possible 1:00.87. I didn't really want to lap you while at the same time I wanted a faster lap.

Thanks guys. That was good fun.

Quite an interesting race for me.

Selected the Macca M9A as it looked like it ought to be quite fast??  Light weight, huge rear wing...what can possibly be bad about it??

After a few practice laps I was getting increasingly depressed, I just could not get any speed out of this car!! :taz: Eventually I reduced the wings and upped the gear ratios so that I could use 1st gear out of The 90, somewhere I usually expect to sweep through in 2nd!!
After much adjustment of ratios and diffs I was able to remove toe in and toe out to gain a few more mph. Then I started trimming off wing angles to gain a few more mph's until the car was just about driveable, but still only in the mid 1:03's!!!
Sure enough the fast brigade were clocking 1:01's in qually and I was not going to be bothering them unless they made some serious and regular mistakes.
The start was a little scary when the grid had to find a way around a slow Marco??? who I see had blown his engine. I confess I held my breath through the fisrt part of the Esses waiting for contact...but woohoo untouched.
Then, there were yellow flags waving, and as I took the right hander onto the straight there were cars everywhere, even in the air!!! so i just aimed for the middle and backed right off the gas, figuring that you aim for where the cars are,cuz they won't be there when you arrive!!....................It worked LOL and I emerged onto an empty straight  having gone from 9th to 4th in 50mtrs!!

No point in waiting for a medal, so I nailed the gas hoping to get a tow from the fast guys. Huh!!! some chance!! when I exited The Loop they were already out of sight!!.

I just pushed as hard as I could trying to hold onto 4th place. Eventually Andreas hauled me in with his Matra and it was very claer that he had much more downforce in the corners than I did. But because I was geared for speed he could not get past on the straights even with the slipstream. So, for many laps I had a Matra sat on my tail, just waiting for a mistake from me.
Andreas just would not go away and every time that I pulled out a few metres of breathing space he closed up again at The Loop!! Then he made a mistake and ran off the track, so I pushed as hard as I could to build a gap.
Then a recovering Axel caught and passed me in his quick Matra and I was demoted to 5th place. I had no answer to the speed of his car even though I had the same engine... :-\.

Slowly, lap by lap, Andreas was eating away at my lead as he too recovered from his off. Eventuall he was back on my tail and I was driving at 110% in every corner and trying to hold the racing line. Once or twice he got alongside out of The Loop but I had just a fraction more straight line pace to get ahead again  :o

Apologies to Greg at this point because I saw Andreas run wide in my mirrors and thought " At last I can relax again". Then suddenly there was a Matra on my tail again??!! How the hell did Andreas catch me that quickly??
But I glance at Prib 2 corners later told me it was Greg and not Andreas. then i was prepared for Samb and Dean when they caught me and was able to move over .

Once I had been lapped i was able to cruise to the flag and collect 5th spot. Not too bad for a car that was at least 2 seconds down on pace  ;).

Big thanks to Andreas for resisting the urge to make a desperate move to get past a very wide and slow McLaren, and grats to Greg, Sam and Dean for the stunning pace up front.

Clive,
the McL M9a has the bad acceleration by +52kg they implemented in "4WD" cars ::)
In sheer top speed it is unbeateable!

I used the McL M7 wich has also good top speed with ~ 7° wing settings with an extra long 5th gear ;)

Dean,
I had gone a little wide in T2 and had the dangerous edge of the armco to avoid, this made me lift, so imho it was a 50:50 RI.

.............With 96X mod I do not understand how much fuel i have to put...........?!?!

Marco, you allways have to control the gas consumption yourself!

The 69X setup allways takes too much fuel per lap! for WG I calculated 1.9 litres per lap so 88l was good for me ;)

The sport cars calculate way too much!
The F2 calculates not enough! so you need more ~ 2-3 laps fuel ;)

............I ran 30fps despite 60ffpsV1.........

Your computer must have been struggling to run GPL at a steady 60fps. With Vsync turned on, it will cut the frame rate in half if the computer can't maintain close to 60fps. Try reducing your Antialiasing settings and Anisotrophic Filtering, turn off the internet meter (Alt+M), display less information in pribluda, and you can turn off some of the textures in your mirrors in GPL options. I don't use specular highlights and dynamic lighting in GPL options. Here are my settings in GPL :

.............With 96X mod I do not understand how much fuel i have to put...........?!?!

You have to calculate fuel consumption on the track. GPL's setup seems to overestimate fuel consumption in the 69Xs.

No problem Clive. I thought it was an excellent move on your part. :) I thought you would let me by between Big Bend and the 90 or after the 90. I had slowed a little more than usual for Big Bend. When you made a wide entrance, it gave me a fraction of a second to see I could pass. Being a tiny bit slower than usual I knew I could stick the car on the inside and use full throttle.

I thought all the lapped cars behaved well as they usually do. I was caught off guard a little bit by being allowed to pass sooner than I expected. I got much closer to Marco than I liked when he slowed sooner than I was expecting, to let me pass. The only reason I had any trouble with Tim and Bastian was they were in a heated battle when I caught them and I just happened to be unlucky I caught Bastian entering the Loop. I was trying to be patient with them even though I was a little worried it might allow Sam to get in my slipstream. It was good discipline on my part. I was concentrating almost fully on the immediate task with little thought about anything else.
