Title: UKGPL Season 28 (2015) 69 Extra Trophy - Mexico City - Jul 26
Post by: Cookie on July 20, 2015, 05:41:08 PM +0100
Season 28 – Round 10 - 69 Extra Trophy - Mexico City

The last round of the 69Xtra season is at Mexico's Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, a 2.786 mile race track in Mexico City, Mexico. This is the Papyrus track, loved and hated in equal measures. Scourge of the racer's lines are those polo tyres, sure to trip you up should you stray off course.

69X use the 60fpsV1 (ftp://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/Replays/Archive/Season27/60fps/) patch.

The race will be run under INT rules and you have a free car choice.
You can do 1 shift+r with a consecutive stop and go in the pits !

Handicapping
Drivers will have a free car choice
BUT
For the Light drivers: Each car can be driven only once in this season!

Driver lists and explicit rules can be found on the championship page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=480&theme=6)

Race List =   IGOR
Server = UKGPL_8
IP Address = look at IGOR
Race date = 26-07-2015
Qualification Time   = ~20:45  UK time -> 45min
Race Time = race starts at 21:30 UK time
Track = Mexico City
Variant = 69X
Damage Model = INT
Race length = ~50 min -> 28 laps
Replay = you will get here (ftp://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/Replays/Archive/Season28/69Xtra/)

The red zone will be fully moderated for lap 1 only. For this event the red zone will be from the start to the exit of T2 left on the first lap . Other moderation will be on reported incidents only.  However any incidents that occur in the red zone that are not reported by the drivers will be reported by the moderator.

Please restrict chat to emergency messages only including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 30 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 25 mins of qualifying left.

I recomment for drivers with low spec pc's to use the original Papy track version for 60fps online races!

GLA

WE WILL USE a PASSWORD for the TRAINING SERVER! = 60fpsV1

There are rumors that LIGHT drivers used the same car for more than one event...

PLEASE have a look at your list yourself and give us the info of your car/track choices.

Kept my nose clean, until 3rd corner from the end, when someone rammed me at great speed from behind!  ::)  Did a shift-R (since I landed on my head), came around the Peraltada, and the chequered flag was waving.  I didn't have a chance to go for a stop n go.  Finished 8th.

That someone was me. Already apologized in the after-race-chat. But looks like you did not recognized. Thought you saw the blue flag and let me by. Sorry again.

I do beg your pardon - I didn't see a blue flag.  I heard/saw you at the hairpin, so was keeping my eyes open for the flags, but you were probably so much faster than me, that I didn't hear or see you right behind me.  I do apologise.

Just looked at the replay. ::)
Would have been an interesting M9a finish, if not Piero and me had a warp contact at T1, 4 laps to go... :'(
Was a great battle til then.

Grats Podium, Clive, Andreas and Martin :thumbup2:

Grats Champion Tim :thumbup1:

I had some great fun dicing with Phil, Marco and Ronnie at the back.
I haven't watched the lead cars on the replay yet but noticed that I could place my car into T1 much more easily than the winged drivers around me - Something which tallied with my offline practice.
It felt really strange consistantly out cornering the faster cars on one of the fastest corners!  ;D

I'd been looking for an excuse to drive the Cooper all season (I love the engine noise for it in this mod), and this race was it.
I'd spent some time with a calculator and decided that all I needed was a points finish and the Championship should be mine, so after setting up the M9a as a backup car I spent some seat time in the BT20 & 24 and also the Cooper.

I found the BT24 to be slightly faster but the Coop had the engine note and slightly more enjoyable handling - so I took that as I expected to be on my own for most of the race instead of fighting tooth and claw for half of it!

Well done to Evil and the podium guys, and to everyone who finished - roll on next season.

(May I suggest that we have a race or two for the non-winged cars in the off season? They're great fun to drive and should be less of a crash-fest than the winged stuff as speeds are kept down - We also have have the Eagle to use as a BT7 replacement ;) )

That Cooper engine sounds like nothing else!  I had a good time chasing you / being chased.  ;D

Well, I guess now is a good time to reveal the "secret" of my blazing start (5th on grid -> unchallenged 1st into and through T1), and how I was able to easily fend off Evil for the first 6 laps.

My stupid mechanic forgot to put the race fuel in. :doh:

Yes, he deserves to be fired, but as he is also the team owner, manager, tester, driver, chief cook, and bottle washer, it's "complicated".

So... here I am on the grid, looking at the 5 gallons indicated, going, "OK, Einstein, wtf is Plan B, genius?".  :-X

Plan B was get ahead as far as I could as soon as I could, and hope the 5 gallons (and a splash and dash when required) would make half distance, then with the normal Mexico attrition I still might make a few places up in the season standings (I think P2 was mathematically possible going into this round).

So the first part of that worked better than I'd expected. As for the rest, no one else cooperated at all. C'mon, four wide on the way down to T1, and everyone made it through shiny-side up? Work with me, people!!  >:(

I joke. GJ all, way to make me pay for my dumbass mistake, grats to Clive for the win, and Tim for a well-deserved season title.

Oh, and I don't recall ever seeing this in the "Mechanical" section of a GPLRA report:

Dean Logan 69X - spotters reporting:
the car slows down and stops.

LOL Dean,

I have to confess to being totally gobsmacked when an Orange McLaren appeared alongside me running down to T1 after the start!!! :o :o I was expecting to see Andreas's Brabham ease past me. I was super careful around T1, because now I had no idea where the expected cars were??!! To emerge from T2 intact and still in 2nd spot was a bonus I felt......but still staggered at the pace of that orange Macca in front.

I was having to push really hard just to stay in touch and was considering easing back and letting you go Dean, just to make sure I survived.  But after a couple of laps I realised that I could regain time through the twisty bits and even get a tow down the straights if I timed it right.. ;D.

Once I had some heat into the tyres and had settled down I found that I could match Dean's pace over a whole lap, but I was more pleased to see that he was really pushing hard in some places to get away....and not quite succeeding  ;)  A quick glance at Prib showed a huge gap back to 3rd place, so i was happy to let Dean push on and drag me along, after all there was still 25 laps to go.

When Dean overcooked it out of the big Esses I had to take avoiding action and fully expected to see him in my mirrors as we went down the straight....but he was not there.....and the gap was growing???!!

Once I had a lead of 0.5mls It was really a case of just managing my pace and concentration to protect the car. Thanks to all of the cars that I lapped, everyone allowed me through very easily.

Grats to Tim on the Championship, maybe a couple of extra points finishes from me might have pushed him a little harder over the whole season...maybe next year???

grats to all finishers and thanks to Walter on a superb debut season of modding. :thumbup2:

Mclaren  M9 It was the fastest on the runway(300-305 Km/h), then it s very difficult to overtake  on the straight.

The end of the Season has arrived, so there's some good racing to be had.  It was Pizza night, in honour of my Ferrari, which helped to spice things up on lap 1.

A good 1st corner, but there's a nasty patch of grass exiting the first complex, which flung my car slightly towards Andreas, which then caused my friendly neighbour to experience a more exciting race.  I was pleased to see his recovery, until he past me at two thirds distance, because he then lead me back onto the same spot, where this time, the wretched grass spun me around backwards!  Grumble!

Great to have a good handling car, and be equipped to do battle with some of our finest.  I'd gladly take a podium every time, if it weren't so heavy.  :blink:

Well I had a bad start and after Martin decided to flung towards my car I was back to 12th spot or something. So I had an eventful race.  :)

Congratulations to Clive for the Race-win and to Tim on the Championship!
Was a real good season which I enjoyed very much!

Moderation published. I'd like to thank Clive and Robert for giving me feedback on this report.

Thanks all for letting me serve as your moderator this season. It has been a good experience. I've learned that I still have a lot more to learn. Ultimately, I have a greater appreciation for the people who make the UKGPL such a great place to race. I am glad that I was able to help out for a little while. Like Robert said, many hands makes lighter work.
