Joe Shaw Memorial Trophy - Round 1 - Snetteron

For those relatively new to UKGPL, the Joe Shaw Memorial Trophy is an annual competition held in the memory of Joe Shaw who raced with us as Beefpie for a few seasons. Joe’s parents have kindly provided a magnificent trophy which is presented at the Goodwood Revival in September. The winner can collect the trophy in person provide they agree to return it the following September.

This year the trophy will be contested of six rounds on classic British tracks using the original 1967 car set. Pro rules apply but the competition is open to all comers. To even up the competition a little the following voluntary handicap system is proposed;
Privateers drivers – no handicap
Works drivers – no Lotus or Eagle
Fastest Works drivers – Honda, Cooper of BRM

The races will be held each Sunday & Tuesday for 3 weeks commencing Sunday 9th August, finishing on the 25th. The track list is Snetterton, Brands Hatch, Donnington, Castle Coombe, Aintree & Goodwood.

I've been planning to wind down a lot of my online sim participation...many are relieved at that news...but I consider this as a must.  As Beefpie would have undoubtedly chosen the BT24 for GPL67 races, I'll look to to likewise.

Here in Canada, the province of Quebec has as their official moto(to be readily seen on automobile licence plates), 'Je me souviens.'  The simple English translation?  'I remember.'

RIP, Joe.

Unfortunately, I will likely miss this one as am away most of the weekend. Hopefully can attend most, if not all, the remaining events. UKGPL9 is up for some practice if anyone's interested.

I'll do my best to make this race - and hopefully the rest of them aswell.
After enjoying the 69x version so much recently I'll moderate myself into the Cooper for this series

Thanks for getting the JSMT up and running Billy, I hope as many members as possible join in for this tribute series to Beefpie.   I'll buy the winner of the trophy, a pint at Goodwood!!

uhmmmmm??!.........should I start dusting down the old Waza?

or maybe at my age, I can be exempted from    "the fastest Works drivers"    ::)

Clive,
I'm expecting busy grids for this series & would be nice to see the a good spread of chassis.
The winners should be the best drivers & the handicap will not be enforced. I expect drivers will use a fair & reasonable judgement about what car they should take. If Joe were racing he'd probably be the BRM!

Just joking about exemption Billy.

I will probably dig out the Waza headband and Fundoshi of Fame for these races.

There will of course be the usual autographed photos available should a Waza win a race  ;D ;D. We also have wall sized posters of the complete crew in their fundoshis on sale for the Waza fans.  ::)

I too, was going to borrow a Waza-mobile for this series (Got to have at least one impostor  ;)).

Having said this I haven't driven the Honda all that much in my GPL career. I only remember the engine getting very hot, very quickly!

Just how high can the engine temperature get before I have to worry?  ::)

For Samb's benefit... and anyone else contemplating the wearing of the Fundoshi of Fame.  Mrs Fujikawa has made contact from her secret mountain retreat, where she is enjoying her retirement from world domination, and issued this advice about her all conquering V12 masterpiece.

She say,

"I watch all things, all time, and know when the mighty Waza race car will be used.

All Ronin intending to use Waza machines must be fearless in race and uphold my honour.

Engine must never reach 260F.

Respect rev limit, banging red pointy thing not good for survival.

Be velly careful with shifting stick down, easy to make wizzy bits part company.

Such is power of Waza engineering , must treat rear tyres with respect".

I think She has just about covered the important points.  ;D

It never fails me if I always keep the engine under 11K. It's a lot of fun to make it sing at 11.5k and improves your lap times, but the engine never lasts long under those conditions. :)

I guess I'm fast enough that I should drive a Cooper. If it had a Honda engine, it might be rather glorious.

Talk about saving weight and getting the CofG lower with the Fundoshi ;D The Wazas are back!

BRM for me or maybe Brabham with RFB - could be fitting for Beefpie :)

I might be missing the last race, depends how it falls, but I'll try to attend them all before that!

What a tricky track it is.  The only chassis I can find to give me stability is the Ferrari.

Sorry, I can't see for looking - are there any Shift-Rs allowed?

Pleased to see a full grid for this one.  Race started well.  Having a good battle with Andreas and Doni until I got it a bit wrong out of the last corner.  I lost momentum and then to top it all I missed a gear near the finish line and consequently I slowed unexpectedly which caught Doni out and he clipped my gearbox sending me into a spin which ended my race.  Apologies to Ronnie Nilsson who hit my wreckage and crashed out but I think everyone else got away with it.

Good luck to everyone still racing.

RIP Joe.

Looks as though I'm continuing my poor form from last season. One of these days I'll learn to drive my own race and not over-drive and crash.....

I'll attempt to make the other races. Sure is fun making that Honda sing  :) (Thanks for the tips guys).

Good luck to those still running.

Sorry to hear Tris, you deserved to win, even in a BT24 ;)

Excellent racing up front, and a worthy tribute to Joe Shaw. From a personal POV happy with my fast lap, but made too many little mistakes in too many laps which cost me trackposition. Just wasn't able to string the good laps. Went through my back last week, and it's hard to maintain good focus...

Grats Iestyn, excellent consistency, and well done to Axel holding me off. Good job finishers and commiserations retirements. Some tough luck for some, like Andy, Greg, Tris and Pelle.

Thanks to Billy and Axel for organizing, see you at Brands ;)

I thought it was you, Phil!  I've never seen a car spinning like that - you were lengthways across the track, so there was no room to get by.  Ah well.  Brands is nicer - a rhythm track, I find.  :)

Excellent turnout. Good to see nearly all chassis represented - apart from the green whizzy one (Lotus 49).
I hope the Privateer drivers are not daunted by the faster drivers in the field. This is an open series, for the first 19 drivers who join the server. I can't think of an easy way of running more than one grid for this series & not sure we really have the numbers to do so. If the leaders have to contend with lapping a few back markers this will just add to the authenticity of the series.
I tried out the Eagle but found the BT24 was better through the corners & more consistent. (If I get chance I will try & sort out a set-up for the Lotus for Brands). The guys at the top end of the grid were incredibly quick, even with handicapped chassis. My ambitions were modest, try not to be lapped & avoid the scenery for long enough to finish - so mission accomplished, but only just. Snetterton is quite a challenging track & caught out enough of the competition to get me 10th place - which I'm quite pleased with.

Grats ID, C & RF  :thumbup1:

In honor of Joe I chose BRM...unfortunately a car I had never tried on Snett. Chose to use my 'fast' Rouen setup...of course with some changes & I had fun. Unfortunately, it went up...& down Again, until I learned how to get control of the heavy car. Especially the first laps were fun close race.  :thumbup2:

Strangely, on the server replay I discover TB & I freeze at the same second...too bad for both of us. When I freezes...imagine the sound of a BRM rising wildly in rpms without exploding...but the car would not cross the finish line

First of all what a great turn out guys! A full grid is something that we rarely see in GPL, so thanks to all for making this first race a fitting tribute to Joe and lets keep the numbers going right through the series  :thumbup1:

Not looked at the replay yet, but I was vaguely aware of Andy's(?) Ferrari alongside me out of the hairpin on lap 1, but after fighting my car through the Bombhole, he was not there??? Hope it was not contact from me that ended the race for that Fezza driver?
I thought I was going to be the lone Waza, but Sam had the b*lls ( and I loaned him my spare fundoshi ) to take the white whale into battle alongside me. In fact, not so much alongside as IN FRONT! for the first few laps.
My setup needed time for the tyres to come up to racing temps and then some careful management to prevent them melting. About mid race I got a bit excited and sent the rear tyre temps into the stupid zone and paid the price with a couple of offs allowing Dean and Greg? to get past. I had to cruise for a couple of laps until sanity was restored to the tyres and then started to hunt them down. I benefited from Tris and Pelle's disco , hard luck guys, and Doni's Brabham threatening me in the last laps forced my lap times down by about a second a lap. That extra pace gained me approx 5 secs on race time which was enough to steal Dean's 4th place as he crawled towards the line with his stricken Brabham.

Grats to Iestyn Cookie and Robert on a fantastic performance out front, that was fast and furious!!!

RIP Joe

I should start on the back row more often!  :)

Grats to Iestyn on a fine win and in the P115, no less.  A sterling drive.

Axel a fine P2 in the Ferrari.

Robert a splendid run in the Cooper for a podium placing.  Good show, RF.

So sad to see that the fine efforts of both Pele and Tris were rewarded with discos.  Bugger!

I had no end of troubles joining the server.  My recently renewed Norton AV software has been revised with upgraded GUI.  And it's proving a joke trying to communicate with it.  It keeps prompting me for clearance to assorted programmes including GPL and all its mods and thingies but no matter how many times I give permission to run, the blankety-blank blank AV software keeps pestering me for approval.  Grrr...  I did finally manage to join and cut a lap to qualify.  I stepped away from the computer for a few minutes and came back to suddenly realize that I was locked up.  A quick dash over to the Task Manager got GPL killed off and in my attempts to rejoin, faced the same silly permission nonsense.  I finally managed to join just as the clock timed out.  I'd lost my grid slot and was placed on the back row with no time credited.  At least I got a start.  PHEW!

The opening laps went well and it was keen to see such a full start field.  Almost immediately, some runners were having grief and soon, I found myself well up the field and on Phil's tail.  PT was driving very well and wringing good performance out of the Ferrari.  I had little chance to size him up for a pass but as he so accurately details above, a slight miscue in the Russel chicane cost him speed on the pit straight and to top it off, a fluffed up-change.  I had no chance to avoid clipping his RR tyre which sent poor Phil into a series of spectacular barrel rolls and a retirement.  Ronnie got caught up in the shunt and it forced his retirement, too.  Sorry, gys.  I actually heard the missed shift as I veered away to the right and I couldn't help but recall that PT and I came to grief off the grid at the recent Monza 69X race.  Deja vu all over again.

The net result of this was a P11 placing in the field but I was under a terrific threat from Tim in his Cooper.  Earlier, he'd had an off and rejoined just behind me and now was making up for lost time.  For the balance of the race, we had at it in a splendid duel for position.  I have little doubt that TM was significantly faster but he just couldn't quite pull off the pass.  Several times, we were level-pegging and I only just managed to prevail by a whisker.  Tim and I have a bit of a history...GP65's at Monaco...that didn't end too well so I was very conscious of having him challenging from close astern but as it turned out, everything shook out just fine with contact.  Great driving there, Tim, and it was a real hoot!

I should mention, too, that at about the 10 lap point, my eyeballs were fogging over rather badly c/w some stinging pain and I seriously considered pulling up with a DNF.  The experience was like having some sand thrown in your face.  Not pleasant.

As the finish loomed, I suddenly had Clive in my sights he in the infamous Wazamobile.  He'd had an off and dropped back to me.  I chased hard with hopes of two goals.  Passing CG and staying out of TM's clutches.  In the first, I failed.  In the second, I succeeded if only just.

Poor Deaner...  :(  The hard-luck man of the race.  If your Repco could only have lasted a couple of hundred more metres...

Hope that Joe enjoyed the show.  Off to Brands!  :)

I know I shouldn't do that...

It is playable with MPC-HC!
