Season 29 Works Trophy - Round 02 - Brainerd

Brainerd International Raceway (Donnybrooke 1971) is a 3.1-mile (4.989 km) road course, dragstrip and kart track near Brainerd, Minnesota, USA. The raceway hosts the National Hot Rod Association's Lucas Oil Nationals. It is a popular racetrack for the Trans Am Series. The spectator seating capacity of the circuit is 20,000.

Opened in 1968 as Donnybrooke Speedway there were no safety barriers, run-out areas, grandstands or even restrooms. George Montgomery and Bud Stall cleared the racetrack through a wooded area on the south side of North Long Lake. With the help of St Paul Sports Promoter Dennis Scanlan It hosted a 2 heat USAC Indy Car race in 1969. The heats were won by Gordon Johncock and Dan Gurney.

In 1973 Jerry Hansen bought the track and renamed it Brainerd International Raceway. It played host to CanAm races in 1970, 1971, and 1972. These races were won by, respectively, Denny Hulme, Peter Revson, and François Cevert.

Please take care joining the track in quali, as you will enter on the racing line!

We ask the drivers to be careful at the start, stick to their own side until they know it is safe to move over, don't take unnecessary risks and if the car ahead slows, be prepared to slow too if it is not safe to make a pass!

Freezing time... :(

I had one in qual. edit: away from kerb

As for the race, BRM has sixteen pistons, think it'd still work OK missing a few but noooooo....   bah.

GL to those still running.

Was anyone on the kerbs at the point of freeze? Apart from damage, I think it's a bit of a disco risk as well.

Another screen freeze  :'(. Up until then was really enjoying the race. Was managing to stay in 4th with the BRM with no errors (surprisingly rare for my driving  ;D).

Good luck to everyone still running.

I'm very annoyed to see you guys mass disco cq. having a screenfreeze...this track has been run by at least 3 other leagues, and also at 60FPS...not sure what the problem is...

A screen lok here just as I was turning into T1 on Lap18.  Simultaneous with several others by the look of things.  Was having a grand dice with Dave at the time.

Edit: Looks like the Privateer lads had no grief.  Just one of those things, I guess.

Quali was great, 34.5 already was a PR in the Cooper, but managed to have a good lap and got even Pole!

Pelle got a better start, he went a bit sideways at the first turn but I didn't want to take risks, and lifted, especially when Attilio wasn't close behind. Pelle had good first laps, and already had a 2s gap after a few laps. Attilio seemed to struggle first laps, or had some issue.

Anyway, when the top 3 was stretched out a bit we almost ran the same laptimes midrace. Still Pelle gained most laps, mostly 2-3 tenths...because he ran a flawless race and very consistent, there just was no way closing the gap. Tried to push more after midrace, but Pelle always matched me or ran faster...

Attilio was about 5-6s behind, as I said he ran about the same pace as me...what a shame you and others suffered from this gremlin...you surely had P3 covered...

Must be Pelle's first win at UKGPL, many congrats, well deserved after coming close many times... also well done finishers, and a heartbreak for many suffering from screenfreezes...

Since I chose this track I will take responsibility for it. As I said it was used by quite some leagues, and personally never had issues here...I apologize to those who suffered...

Q: From only the ½ hour practise I've gotten just before the race, I wasn't expecting much but luckily the track was very easy to learn, so at least I was pleased to post my fastest lap in qual which put me at 5th

R: Botched the start and had to shortshift to not go across the grid sideways which put me in 8th after L1.. A few laps later I had a lucky timing with Tommie going sideways in his BRM while I got a good exit in the mid-track-corners so I could shoot up the inside before the next turn.. not long after I could slipstream by Dave on the straight to snatch 6th.. A lap or so later I got a run on Sam just before the straight, but he was clever enough to exploit my limited exit onto the straight from the inside line to slingshot by me down the straight and take it back.. Being right on his tail through T2 a lap later, I decided to go for the dive into T3.. and dove right pass a possible braking point onto the grass while spinning in my over-exuberant-move ::) :D.. luckily I didn't collect Sam on the way and suddenly found myself in 9th.. looking at replay I'm not proud of my reentry, I thought I was behind everyone but clearly Greg had to adjust his line to be comfortable so I'm sorry for that Greg! :-\
I followed Greg and after he passed Doni, the 3 of them (including Dave) was in close company, then being too aggresive while trying to set up an attack coming through the quick left-right quirk, I ended up bumping Doni - I'm very sorry Doni!  :-\ Glad to see that you were able to continue quickly after, hopefully without damage!  :-[  Fairly enough, I went spinning onto the grass and took some time getting back on track, from there on I managed a decent pace and caught Dave, again passing him down the straight.. Seeing that Greg was next made me realise than any further gain would be hard, but that's when I realised I was 4th due to the disco's.. then getting handed 3rd when Greg had an off, just symbolised the chaos of the day for me.. All said and done, this was without a doubt the most fun race I've had since I've picked up GPL again, so thx to all involved for that  :) and a big grats to Pelle for his great win !!

This is a really fun track, but unfortunate there were so many problems with disco  ???

YEAH...RF yes, I think this is my first win here at UKGTL  ;D

Yes I won, but I was in a fast car today...& to be honest, it was certainly not my intention to use tokens in a Ferrari on this track...it was pure laziness  :P
Downloading track & discovers it's already installed (believe me, it's not fun getting old)...& remember, it has been running on GPLBrasil (do not think we had disco problems)...but I had a setup (many) & only for Ferrari. It got a few more adjustments & was almost perfect.

Qual:
Tested 31 laps setup, but were forced to a couple of fast laps with four laps fuel, if I had to be at the top...RF is just too fast  ;)

Race
Starting at side by side with RF (Cooper) & my Ferrari...on paper it may seem exciting, but I was nervous, really. My 2nd gear was very low & heavy at the start (perfect inside the race) & the inside line to the T1 Yark...because, it was here my race ended in GPLBrasil, I hit curbe (a little fun, from 1st place) & the car fell apart  :o
RF, I felt my speed was better before T1 & I could take the front...I can look at what you write...you could see I was nervous

The rest of the race, I knew...one mistake & RF could be waving goodbye. To my great surprise, no one came. 31 laps with RF behind...it puts a 'little' pressure.  8) To my luck, Ferrari was good today.

Thank you for providing space for them that were taken on a lap, & note I waved  :)

Big Grats RF  :thumbup1: & PA, this was nothing less than a stunning comeback, so far down & get up on the podium, YEAH...& real good points for TEAM-GTLDK, yes...we are #1  :thumbup2:

Thank you all for a good race here on...bumbum (s ...)...

Thanks Pelle. Many leagues use the GPLRA exports and publish it. Here at UKGPL mostly the GPL Replay Analyzer reports are used to import results, but for the rest it's the League Manager 2 database that takes over. Also, most of the times at UKGPL the game export and GPLRA race export are included in the compressed replay file. Not nescessarily for Works ATM, but I'm grateful for Jethro hosting and importing results!

Personally I always scrutineer the results with GPLRA after the race. The first thing I do after a race is checking it ;)

Again, great race, surely motivates me to step up my game. In the end we all are nervous (at the start), it's just making sure keeping the nerves in check, you need to be tensed a bit to be focussed (well I need) and use it in a positive way (focus). It's an art to be mentally strong and accept you can't control things out of your hands, and focus mainly on your own thing...

To me seeing guys like you and Clive racing, I'm not worried about getting old(er)... :D Like Max Verstappen stated: age is only a number ;)

^^ also should have mentioned Axel ;)

Congrats Pelle, Rob, and Peter! I knew Rob would have great difficulty beating Pelle from the Q times. Even though he posted the fastest lap for the event. Over a race, beating a superior car makes the task much harder. Excellent job Rob keeping Pelle on his toes! Great job Peter taking the last podium position. Maybe I should start drinking again?

That was nothing but luck to finish so well. The Brabham being a superior car to the drivers I was racing with, helped a lot too. I was always making mistakes. About the only thing I did right was not hitting anything until late in the race and managing to finish. A good drive should have easily got me the same position without all the discoes, but I didn't real drive well enough to deserve any better than 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th place...... My commiserations to all the drivers who were disconnected. :(

I could pass the Coopers and BRMs on the long straight. Tom and Sam looked they were going to be difficult to pass later in the race though. I only got follow Tom for one lap before he and Sam were discoed. His exit from the final turn was very good so I may not have been able to pass the BRMs late in the race. It probably wouldn't have mattered anyway. I spun again after they had discoed.

I hope I can get my act together soon. It's much more fun when I'm running consistently at speeds close to what I am capable of doing.

Take care guys. See you next time.

Mod report published. No reports, hard luck for those suffering from screenfreezes. I am wondering myself if it isn't some other factor leading to it apart from the track. Again, we try to use reliable tracks only, that have been run and tested...
