Title: UKGPL Season 29 (2015-16) Historic Trophy (66) - Reims - Oct 20

Season 29 Historic Trophy - Round 2 – Reims

The second round of the season will be at Reims in France.  The circuit is basically several long straights with a couple of hairpins and a few cornfields. Catching a tow is what this track is about. It normally produces close racing. Reims-Gueux was first established in 1926 on the public roads between the small French villages of Thillois and Gueux. The circuit had two very long straights between the towns, and teams strove to maximize straight-line speed of their cars; many slipstream battles ensued. Race organizers actually felled trees and demolished old houses in order to make the circuit even quicker. International racing came with the first official Formula One event occurring in 1950, the inaugural year of the Formula One world championship. The circuit layout was shortened and changed in 1952 to bypass the town

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

All races will be run at 60 frames per second – please use this patch 60fpsV2newmod (ftp://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/Replays/Archive/Season27/60fps/).

Drivers must complete 50% of each race to score.

This race is for cars with 2 Litre engines.

First of all let me apologise to Tom for giving him a prang at the last hairpin. I lost all sound for some reason and lost the back end under braking while attempting to drive silently. My sincere apologies for that.

Up until then I was having a blast dicing with Tim, Doni and Tom. Just a shame my hardware let me down. I was about to quit when I realised Windows had tried to pop-up something which meant GPL was running in the background, hence the lack of sound. I've never had this issue before, but it's no excuse for crashing into your competitor.

After that, I soldiered on for a couple of laps but to be honest my heart wasn't in it anymore so decided to retire. Good luck to those still running and apologies once again to Tom.

No worries Sam! If it was not for you I wouldn't have been able to join anyway :) . Hope nobody minds that I chipped in despite not being registered. I simply forgot. Done now :) .

I basically copied over my Lotus 43 setup with which I set the UKGPL lap record here last year, worked as well on the little BT11 BRM as it did on the big Lotus :) . Although lacking horsepower compared to the works BRM's it was nice to drive. I only had time to do one timed lap, which only put me 9th on the grid. However I managed to stay out of trouble and when the dust cleared after a couple of laps, I found myself fighting for the lead with Tim, Doni and Sam. My private Brabham was no match for the works guys in their BRM's and Ferrari's, but despite this I was able to give them a good run for their money. I set my gearing to the limit and hoped it would hold up against the punishment of redlining all the way down the straight in the slipstream. I hardly ever suffer from mechanical trouble anyway so thought I'd gamble a bit. Unfortunately I got caught up in a typical Reims incident, but it was a last minute dicision to join anyway, so I was glad to provide a little opposition :) .

Carried on after the nudge, but was too late to get going to catch some slipstream of the second bunch, and on my own the Brabham is just too slow to gain any more ground. On top of that the suspention was bent, so I was doomed for a lonely race from that point onwards. I consequently binned it the next lap when I tried to brake a little late despite bent suspention, hit the wall and lost my left rear wheel. Ah well, at least I lived to tell the tale :) .

I lost all sound for some reason and lost the back end under braking while attempting to drive silently.

May not work for you;   but when that happens to me,  I find clicking a mouse button puts the sound back into GPL.

Obviously, the sound will leave at an inconvenient time;  & then scrabbling around for the mouse causes its own trouble.

Cheers,
Dave.

Answer found with the replay.Tommie with BT11 294km,Axel with BRM 283km,Andreas with Lotus BRM 275,Girard with BT11 similar to me 270.If this speed are without trail, how is explained this differnce?

My speed is probably in the slipstream. On it's own the BT11 is quite slow, maybe 275ish? Either way, I did the following:

- Set gearing really tight. I was fully redlining down the straight in the slipstream. Had about 400 rpm left in clean air.
- Pump up the tires. I pumped them up about 4 or 5 PSI (4 or 5 clicks) for less drag down the straight.
- Good corner exits. Vital if you want to keep in the slipstream.

The BRM P261 and Ferrari 246 have the highest top speed. The Lotus 33 Climax V8 and Eagle and BT11 Climax are the slowest I think.

Yes right,i discover this in the morning. With the BRM i was able to reach 283km.I chose the wrong car for this race but, anyway, since the engine abbadoned me after few laps, was not a big problem.
