Title: UKGPL Season 29 (2015-16) Works Trophy (67) - Kyalami - Nov 1
Post by: Robert Fleurke on October 26, 2015, 10:00:41 PM +0000
Season 29 Works Trophy - Round 03 - Kyalami

For the third round of the season we go to a familiar track. Kyalami Racing Circuit (from Kyalami, My home in Zulu) is a motor racing circuit located in Midrand, Gauteng province, South Africa. The circuit has been used for Grand Prix and Formula One races and has hosted the South African Grand Prix many times. Among the Formula One races held at the track the 1977 South African Grand Prix stands out, as it is principally remembered for the fatal accident that claimed the lives of race marshal Frederick Jansen van Vuuren and driver Tom Pryce. In recent years, the area surrounding the circuit has developed into a residential and commercial suburb of Johannesburg.

IMPORTANT: it is policy of UKGPL to have the original pitstraight armco installed at this original track!

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

This Season we don't have a Red Zone. Moderating will be on reported incidents only. If you haven't received a PM about an incident before the link below the results table is removed, you can be sure that you will not appear in the moderator's report.

The chassis token system is explained on the Works (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=511&theme=6) standings page. Please ensure you choose a chassis that is within your budget, which can be seen by hovering the mouse over your points total in the standings.

YEAH Kyalami...not my favorite, but a Org GPL track  8)

One thing I have never quite understood used in many clubs: Tokens / Coins  :o (yes, I have gone to school before GPL, 2+2=1998)

I tried again & if I understand it correctly, you can run a full season in only 2 cars:

*
Lotus/BRM
Eagle/Honda
Ferrari/Cooper
*This requires that you are always running at least one lap & will receive 10 starting coins  :D
...& from Brabham & down...you can run the same car all season.

Did I understand...a bit  ;D

It is free to use the tokens as you wish. Within the current tokens system, the Brabham is the most used car. However we encourage drivers to use different cars for diverse grids.

Personally my choices are more track related, as done often by many other drivers as well. Often newer, unknown or difficult tracks will have a lot of lesser cars on the grid. Monza will have often many Lotus and Eagle's naturally...

Pelle,
You start the season with 10 tokens & get 10 for each start. That's 110 tokens for a full 10 race season.

For example. last season I took Eagle X 3, Cooper x 3 & Brabham X 4 = 106 tokens.

Make sure you don't overspend tokens early in the season. If you take the Lotus for race 1, you will starts race 2 with 0 tokens. You get 10 for starting race 2 so you could use the Brabham or any lower car.

Dug this out of an old thread, for those who need it:

Quote
Follow these instructions to restore the wall if you have a mod that has removed it:
METHOD 1: To place a wall between the pits and the track, rename or remove the kyalami.trk and kyalami.3do files from your kyalami folder.
METHOD 2: To reinstall the original Papyrus Armco, rename or remove the Armco_s.mip file from your kyalami folder.

Drivers risk disqualification running without a pitwall.

...Hope it's a good race...

It was a great race, just 10 laps too long.

I am beginning to remember why I have never bothered with the 67 BRM in 8yrs of UKGPL and 12 yrs of total GPL  :-\  I thought that it was about time I used it for a season, hopefully I could begin to understand how to set it up, and make it work.

Thus far I can announce that neither is happening!!  :-\.
I was quite happy to start at the back of the grid with a plan to stay in touch with the midfield pack, but after the first few laps it all started to unravel as the rear tyres got hotter and hotter.
I was circulating with Jethro??  ( who  appeared to be having similar problems with his Lotus!!) for my last few laps, but my rear tyres had fallen off the cliff, to use current F1 terminology and the ass of my BRM was fully focused on getting in front at every corner. Each time the rear broke away the tyre temps climbed another 10deg, and the next corner presented even more problems.

Eventually it all got out of control and I ripped a wheel off against the armco  :(.

Grats to Robert on some very quick times and to the podium and finishers.....one day I will have this Bl**dy Rubbish Metalthing driveable, but until then I am going to beat Arnold over the head with a broken front suspension arm!!

Overheating tires will be more of a problem with the BRM since it's also heavier. I think it's important to have a neutral car, and not to push too much with it (not too much sideways), managing the tires. At some tracks it's a real problem. Hope you can figure it out Clive!

Had a good quali and race, happy with my drive. Qualifying sub19 and most racelaps in the 19s. Since I often use a slightly more conservative setup for the race, it's always hard for me to achieve my quali times in the race...

The Ferrari is a great handling car, easy to drive. Again Attilio had some probs early laps, and after that increased the gap to Dean. Dean, who ran a great race, was unlucky to get a mechanical losing second. Most eventful was doing a slalom through cars cars sitting at Jukskei Sweep. That was a close one...

Well done Pelle and Attilio for podium, and finishers. Commiserations to the retirements, and to Dean for his heartbreak...thanks to the lapped cars for the room!

Neutral handling car  ??? Not too much sideways  ??? ??? Clive  ??? ??? ??? Your having a laugh Robert

Grats to the podium of Robert, Pelle and Attlio. Tough break Dean and nice drive Peter. Me, I just made one too many small mistakes to be within a sniff of the podium. But a PB at a track I have never had much luck at feels like a win. See you all at the next one.

 ;D

It's true Clive has a very spectacular oversteery style ;)

@ Clive: maybe try to take away some grip at the front (in general more wheelrate front, or stiffer frontbar, or higher tirepressures front) to get a more neutral balance (or reverse tweaks at the rear giving it more grip). Also being smooth on the throttle exiting, feathering to avoid wheelspin helps a lot. Also you could experiment with the diff settings having more or less rotation, it can work in both ways in my experience also depending on the track characteristic...

With this BRM hotlap setup I achieved 1m20.08s. Maybe compare the numbers you have.

Sideways??? moi??  I don't know what you mean!!  ::)

Thanks for your setup Robert, at first glance I can see several differences, but I will investigate further this evening.
With the setup that I had, I think that I had actually dialled in too much understeer and I was forced to use a stab on the gas to get the tail around or face a very slow entry into corners.
Which is probably what was at the root of my tyre problems.

Be warned, I shall be lurking at the back of the grid in the BRM this season.  :shifty:

Dismal race from me, at one of my fav tracks too.

I had PC issues a week or so back, that required a new install of Windows, which then meant the GPU wasn't recognized, etc, so had a fair amount of faffing to do before I could even get GPL to work.

Did a bit of praccy before the race and was happy with my pace.  Come the race however and I couldn't get near my potential.  After circulating in 5th for a while I had several issues in quick succession and found myself pretty much last.  I did catch up to a battle between Doni and Dave.  I took a lunge at Doni which wasn't really on and it ended in tears.  Sorry for that Doni, pleased you could continue.  I also continued but my screensaver decided to make it interesting for a few secs whilst Rob lapped me, pleased I didn't blindly take you out.  Have to remember to disable that.  After many more spins (may have had slight damage) I decided to end the suffering and park it!!

Not sure if it is me getting older but my eyes seemed to be taking a right beating from the screen and I found playing the game far from a pleasure

Cheers,

Bob.

I may be not much help Clive, but I've always found Gregor Huttu's setups to be an excellent base to work from. I used that this race and managed a PB in quali :).

In the race, I enjoyed a consistent and spin-free outing which was pleasing but my pace wasn't brilliant and spent most of the race being overtaken instead of overtaking. Slightly disappointed to get lapped by Robert before race's end but pleased to have won the BRM trophy this outing  ;).

Congrats to Rob, Pelle and Art and commiserations to Dean for that smoky engine. Unusual for a Repco unit to go bang.

Congrats Rob, Pelle, Attilio, and all! Excellent speed Rob and a nice job by Pelle!

Each time the rear broke away the tyre temps climbed another 10deg, and the next corner presented even more problems.

one day I will have this Bl**dy Rubbish Metalthing driveable,

I know that sentiment from the first statement. The second one, I have my doubts I'll ever do.

Thanks Sam and Rob. I need to try some other setups at some point.

Without two spins, I'd have probably got a very good result. But any time I tried to push just slight bit more, things started getting rather dramatic.

Every turn was drama for the first two laps. Somehow I managed to keep it on the track and pointed in the right direction. Plus with a collision directly in front of me, I wasn't feeling good.

Lap 3, I finally started getting some tire grip. As Doni slowly started closing on me, things started getting dramatic again. I got sideways at Sunset Bend four or five laps in a row. I started suffering like Clive from overheated tires. I finally got every thing under control again and then Jonny rapidly closes. I push it a little bit and miss my lift point for Leeukop Bend and slowly spin. I'm glad Jonny and Doni had no problem dealing with my spin. Unfortunately I panic and blindly try to get out of the middle of the track and hit Bob. :( My apologies for the contribution to your woes.

Things are pretty sedate for a while after that, until shortly after Rob laps me. I get a little of the same excitement as Rob after Jukskei. Luckily I was shown a yellow flag. I could see Rob and Doni fine but I didn't notice Bob until late. Without the yellow I'd might have been going too fast to avoid an accident.

Then I'm behind Doni. The next time into Sunset I spin. I guess it had to happen at some point or another after many near misses there.

I could run low 22's without a problem, any faster I had all sorts of trouble. It takes more discipline than I have, to not try to push a little at some point during a race. I'm pleased to finish with the Bl**dy Rubbish Metalthing.

Thanks guys.

Kyalami Report (http://www.gpl1967.dk/GPL/Replays/UKGPL/Replay/S29Kyalami/index.html)

Grats RF...fantastic  ;)

Oops, it was my intention to use Eagle at Kyalami, but come to think of, I used Ferrari at Donny Brooke, a race I won...how could I forget  ???
The choice was now the new Honda RBR (this is still secret) & little surprising start as 5 on this grid...& of course, the only Honda in the field  ;D

Honda is still heavy & my setup didn't make the car easier...& a terrible heavy gearbox. On the other hand, I could manhandle it around on the track & run the whole race without mistakes

Race:

Surprised I passed RP in Ferrari at the start  8) ...& is now very close to DL (really close, I hope not destroy your engine)...1st lap was really good race.
Unfortunately, RP still behind, I must admit...I was close to giving up on your noise Ferrari engine, but you never took advantage of the long side to go past (between us, I'm impressed with all your gear shift...maybe you switched more on one lap, than me throughout the race)  :D

AA takes a spin & I'm now 3rd ??? ...& I'm still waiting for the engine of DL gives up...oops, it does...now 2nd ???
I had to watch the replay...now AA again come up & try to get past, but unlucky. I think I can relax...but AA returns...lucky race is over and ends 2nd...but far up to RF that had an incredible speed  :o

Grats AA, it was close  ;D...& fantastic PA, 4 in Cooper...good points for our Team Again  :thumbup1:

hush hush...still a secret RBR, but as the car looked at Kyalami, near DL & RP  :D

Clive: You keep the revs of the beast quite high so it has the tendancy to snap sideways. Drive it normally (ish) and see whether that helps out.

My race was abruptly ended due to heat issues on my laptop. Poorly thing didn't stand a chance. The handling of the Lotus was so-so for several reasons, chief of which was the eejit sat in the chair.

Grats on the podium Pelle. I am honoured to feature in your cartoon

I find the Ferrari quite twitchy to get off the line. Therefore I went with a pretty tall first gear which while slow off the line at least kept me reasonably straight and not into anyone elses path. I also added a few clicks to the rest of the gears as I tend to blow a lot of engines in this mod with my ham fisted gear changing. While I was in contention I was happy to follow you rather than make a desperate lunge down the inside into the first corner. But a few simple mistakes on my part sent me back.

Pelle, maybe you should make GPL cartoons of our races

My fantasy...nothing wrong , unfortunately it requires too much time to just create a single image, this took maybe a few hours, but also because there was built a RBR Honda.

yes Jonny, Red Bull is 20 years wrong. Maybe better with my favorite drink, Chivas is from 1801...or what I drink the most, Coca-Cola & in Danish colors  :D

Danish colors, oops PA...when you change your flag, white is surrender  ;)

Hehe Pelle, Yeah yeah, the REAL story of the danish flag's red 'n' white, is that it's the blood of our opponents on Their white flag as they surrendered  :P

Grats to Rob on a very superior win! and of course to my teammate Pelle for making the useless Honda go that fast! and Artiglietti for making a good comeback to 3rd :D

Again not much practise for me, so I decided to go with the good old trusty Coop and aim for a steady race performance.. I was 0,5s off my prib in Qual, so I started 9th..

Got up to 8th when Artiglietti went off/had an incident(?) - soon after I tried to overtake Axel Cookie for 7th into T1, but sadly we touched mid-corner, I'm sorry Axel but I was trying my best to stay inside and looking on my replay I feel I gave you enough room? Don't know how you experienced that one? Sad to see that you quit the race after that :-\
Not long after Artigletti started his comeback by overtaking me, putting me 8th again, I tried to give room as I knew/could see he was alot faster than me but he waited his due time to make the pass..
Bob W. got some trouble some laps later(?) handing me 7th, not long after I was able to pass Sam for 6th in his, quite impressively fast, BRM! - Was then able to pull away from Sam over the next many laps..
Suddenly Ronnie and Artiglietti popped up in front of me, having had some kind of trouble.. I tried to push to see if I could make an impression on Ronnie, but not only was he pulling away from me in spite of my effort, I also had a small off in T4 as a result and decided to back down and keep steady after my little scare..
To my luck Ronnie spins and hands me 5th, but I noticed in my mirrors that he was already pointing in the right direction and heading my way before I went round the next bend.. So I decided to push a bit again, and see if I could keep him behind with 10 laps to go.. Not long after I could pass Dean for 4th as his car was crawling with engine trouble.. The rest of the race was me nervously looking at the gap to Ronnie every time I crossed the line, as he kept eating his way closer and closer, especially in the final couple of laps he was going really fast and I could see him and his red monster growling at me while he was chasing me down like a shark after fresh meat in Jaws.. Luckily we ran out of laps before he caught me, but I sure could feel the "don't fuck up now"-pressure on those final laps :D

On a side note I think our team Team-GTLDK has been awarded too many points as Pelle and me only scored 75 not 80 in the last round (unless we have a teammate I don't know about :))

I see it like you, it was just my fault not taking a wider line, you did nothing wrong!

I retired as my adrenaline was too high and my physical condition not good.

On a side note I think our team Team-GTLDK has been awarded too many points as Pelle and me only scored 75 not 80 in the last round (unless we have a teammate I don't know about :))

Since Attilio isn't in a team, you will inherit 3rd place team points, that's why you scored 32pts for the driver standings, and 37pts for the team standings ;)

PS: get well soon Axel!

@Cookie: Okay, at least I'm pleased we can agree it's a racing incident, if not for those damn collisionboxes nothing would've happened.. sorry to hear about your health, all the best for your recovery!

@Rob: Arh okay - now I get it ;-)

Mod report is up. Thanks for making my life easy, but I encourage everyone to report incidents they are involved in.
