Title: UKGPL Season 29 (2015-16) Privateers Trophy (67) - Nürburgring - Nov 15
Post by: Robert Fleurke on November 09, 2015, 03:44:49 PM +0000
Season 29 Privateers Trophy - Round 04 - Nürburgring

For the fourth round of the season we move to Germany to race at the legendary Nürburgring - Nordschleife. Since its construction (1925 - 1927), the Nordschleife has enjoyed a reputation as a terrifying and merciless route through the Eifel forests. An English journalist who visited the Nordschleife during the opening race on 18 June 1927 even concluded “that it seemed as if a reeling, drunken giant had been sent out to determine the route”. The Formula 1 pilot Sir John Young Jackie Stewart – after all a three-time world champion in 1969, 1971 and 1973 – was so impressed by the circuit that he gave it the name which it will probably never lose: Green Hell (Grüne Hölle).

Racing and winning on the Nordschleife has always been very special for racing drivers, because the track is one of the most demanding in the world. Tricky corners, treacherous crests, steep inclines and gradients and constantly changing road surfaces demand great skill from the driver and put vehicles to a hard test.

As a poor and humble reservist, how many tokens will I dispose of to start at my beloved  Nurburgring ? The Championship Score Table doesn't say anything.

AFAIK you only attended WG race so far, in the BT24.

You got 10 tokens for season start, 10 tokens for the racestart, minus 10 tokens for the Brabham. So now you have 10 tokens (and will get another 10 tokens for racestart Ring).

The pitlane will be slightly altered, but the outlap will NOT be timed...we have enough time to set a qualifying time...

But a full outlap takes  nearly 10mins;  & that's before going back to the pits for one of the replacement cars!

I think we have used "ringtrainer" on the server for previous races , saves doing a whole warm up lap which usually ends in disaster 9/10s of the way round . for qualifying you start the lap just before the finish straight .

here is no need to apply the patch to your installation.  This modification is only applied to the server.

Sometimes wonder why I bother with all the practice I do.  Got pole.  Got jumped at the start.  Lost a wheel in an unavoidable crash about 2 minutes later.  Fell to last place as everybody overtook me, unable to reset until they'd all passed.  From then on, last chance saloon.  Worked my way up to second, and was hit from behind yet again, flipped onto my head. ::)

Very frustrated indeed right now.  >:(

I was able to survive quite a few minor offs. On the plus side, I had not missed that many gear shifts in the race. However, I pushed too hard on lap three, and I lost the right rear wheel twice.

I stayed on the server to watch and cheer on the finishers. Congrats all, Good race.

Was a hairy one tonight!

Lost half of qually, as I was watching recorded F1 from earlier & managed to fall asleep about 15-20 laps in  :)

I really could have done with the practice too!   Nearly managed to complete 1x  Q lap,   but flipped the car over on the final downhill straight thanks to the hedge jumping out after the bridge...   Still;  would have started from the same position anyway...

Race seemed to go out really;  thanks to misfortune elsewhere.   I really didn't want to waste the tokens,  so went with the Honda;  although no Old Spice required.
Have to say though,  the thing was indestructible.   Start/1st lap was ok due to problems elsewhere.  Luckily,  managed to even up the front end later in the race,  so severe damage on both sides [couldn't really tell!].

Had some fun circulating with Walter for a while and then Ronnie's Lotus [way quicker,  but he seemed happy to wait for me to fall off]. Then in the later stages Billy;  who was way faster than me & then off down the road,  but clearly had some major issues towards then end.

Previous fastest lap here was 9:08 in the Honda [my quickest car; really don't come here often as I don't like it!].   But was chuffed to have got in 3x laps sub-9mins;  good result for me.

Congrats all finishers.  Congrats on the fastest lap Bastian;  that must have been a real flyer!   However, I've just looked at the Pro times & they are quite depressing. 8:04? c'mon!

Bernie proving again he's no slouch either.

Cheers all,
Dave.

Apology accepted, but frankly, I'm still seething.  Two races prior and one after this I will be driving poor cars to pay for the Lotus.  I end up 8th.  Far too many people in this league have a "die-or-bust" attitude, lunging for gaps that simply don't exist in places which are not passing places, and to hell with the consequences for other drivers.  I am not enjoying this at all, and seriously considering giving up.

This is my least favourite Papy track and I wasn't expecting much - an expectation that was amply fulfilled. Starting cautiously  at the back I still managed to get caught up in an incident soon after the start and trundled along at the rear for the rest of the race.
But I did manage  a couple of laps without any offs ( a career first ) and some sub 10 minute laps which I regard as a major achievement
A silly error with the finishing line in sight meant that I didn't finish the race but congratulations to Bernie leading the Soggie's revival with a fine podium finish :thumbup2:

Car and driver were working well, and expecting good things to happen at the Nurb.  As per requirements, I grabbed the lead, and started to open a gap, up until the flat out dip before Adenauer Forst.  Whereapon, a one second freeze frame, allowed a rear wheel to stray onto the grass.  Slithering commenced, with a brief stop on the racing line, aided by that tree everyone uses for breaking.  My prime pursuer arrived immediately to assist, but instead removed a wheel from his Lot.  His was not a happy lot.

I somehow survived to do close battle with Phil, until we were both overhauled by Bastian.  Checking the start/finish line at 2 laps, the first 4 cars were 4 seconds apart.  I then had a frame related engine reconfiguration, and another freeze frame shortly thereafter.  Noted how traction is lacking when wheels sit pointing skyward.

Add one maddog to the list of those, unhappy with the service provided.  I will not be venturing back to race '67's, unless/until the connection issue now plaguing UKGPL, is fixed. >:(

I joined hoping to just finish the race , Love this track but not too hot here so was very surprised to see all my race laps were sub 9 mins !
Even more surprising was to find me leading the race for 3 laps , how did that happen  ::)
Just as I was dreaming of becoming famous and having front page headlines in the Wigan Weekly News , along came Bastian with 2 cracking final laps to steel the glory.
Bastian had passed me a few times but kept disapearing into the shrubbery allowing me to re take the lead , the Graph doesn't show how many position changes , there was some good scrapping going on down the order in spite of the outcome .

Sorry to here 1 or 2 are thinking of jacking , my own connection was better than I thought it might be though there was a few warp intervals here and there , in particular lap 1 when the field was bunched and frame rate dropped noticeably .

By the end of Lap 3 I was exhausted and remember hoping that someone would wave the chequered flag next time around , after the race It felt like I had done 6 rounds in the ring with Joe Frazier than 6 rounds of the Nurbergsring .

Brilliant drive Bernie.  You managed to keep your concentration better than me.  I managed to inherit the lead thanks to a few mistakes ahead only to do the same myself.  I think I damaged my car when I spun off on lap 2 because it was handling like a dog after that.  I lost a place to Martin on a twisty bit that I should have been much quicker on.  I then completely locked up at the end of the long straight after the pits (could have had a puncture??) and needed a shift R.  I tried to catch up to you but I wasn't making much headway when I crashed into a hedge row full of fly paper and my race was over.

Ronnie, please don't get downhearted.  Report the incident and it will be dealt with fairly and impartially.  The purpose of the moderation is to award penalties to try to redress the balance when a driver has been unfairly disadvantaged (not perfect because we can only demote, we can't promote to compensate a driver directly).  But it is also a means of learning from our own and others mistakes so that drivers get some feedback on their performance and some advice on how to improve.  Admittedly this can be done informally on the drivers forum but the moderating team's analysis tends to be more impartial.

Lap 5: 8m05.373s [Off the track]
Lap 6: 8m04.581s [Off the track]

Reporting for duty 8).

I did a 7:52 in preparation for oAo, but then on the day, my PC was behaving as if it was recovering from a hefty night out (thanks Windows Update!) and I was unable to run.

Given the lack of drag present in GPL (papy reduced drag instead of boosting slipstream when testing at Monza), I'm pretty confident Clark would do sub 7:45s :).

My 'rule of thumb' is that GPL is 4% faster than real life. So, I consider my time to be an 8:10-11, which puts me near Hulme, Gurney etc., while those pesky aliens are the ones challenging Clark !

Moderation will have to wait after the weekend. Pre-moderation has been done, but right now I'm not at home and ran out of time to publish before leaving earlier today. Also hope to be back in time for tomorrow's races.  ::)

Sorry for the inconvenience, always aiming to complete moderation before the next race.

too bad to lose the victory like this.

very frustrating. I couldn't expect a such big speed difference, Ronnie could have driven the same speed. as you said, i did the same speed as before and
at the ring are few possibilities to overtake so imo you have to stay close.

not as frustrated as Ronnie was I expect , for me not the way to win I would have liked but will take it anyway , probably we all have ring hard luck and "if only " stories to tell .

Thought it was a good race which I enjoyed very much .

I don't recall having problems passing anyone myself after having been demoted to last place on lap 1 T1 through no fault of my own    ::)

Thanks for the mod report Robert  :)

Quite understandable at such a long track, Ronnie. Phil initially also forgot to do his S&G.

If it's up to me I would remove the specific division DQ rule for next season, since the general UKGPL Rules say a 30s penalty would be normal. But that's my personal opinion.

Hopefully you will have more fun next races, I gathered you finished 4th at Balcarce ;)
