Ach, I'm using this one to drive a real dog - I just can't decide which is better: the Lotus 63 or the BRM.  ::)

The BRM isn't such bad, it is just a little slower than the 312 ;)

The Lotus 63, Matra64 and McL9a are 4WD without the frontwheels connected, what makes them heavy and slow in acceleration.

No problem there ,  Ronnie has loads of practise driving with 2 wheels   ;D

The best choice will be a car enough robust to survive to the crashs at T1 and T2 on 1st lap ...  ::)   ;D

I can't see the Sherman Tank option anywhere David?  ::)

I think the only tactic for this race is to qualify on pole and make a brilliant start, so that you are clear of the pack for the first lap...OR... forget quali, and start slowly at the back of the grid, leaving enough space ahead to watch the crashfests and avoid them.

The problem being..that if everyone decides to start at the back of the grid we will all be there??!!! Can we all start on the back row??

OK I lied - both of those cars are so bad at corners, I can't drive them here. Will save the BRM for Monza 10K !

I've got a medical problem. It may be a while before I can race again.

I worried about all the things mentioned above, before the last race. I finally settled on: qualify as usual, be very careful at the start and try to leave some room for others. It worked somewhat. I wasn't quite able to avoid giving Sam a little bump though. Watch TvO's start at Silverstone to see some excellent patience and care.

As in the other thread. Hope you get well soon Greg  :).

No worries Fran, these kind of things happen in racing. I was a bit cheeky squeezing you for the apex as I was keen on staying as close to Tommie as possible. I only lost one position to Dean after recovery so not a huge amount lost  :). Though I was keeping Tommie honest throughout the race after he passed me, I was struggling to think of how on earth I was actually going to pass him. It is a tricky track to overtake at this one.

Nevertheless great fun racing with Tommie and Dean. Managed to bag another Pole and 3rd place at the end of it all, just hope I can convert one of those into a win sooner or later.

I hope you get well soon Greg!

It's great to have another win, and on a track I like, too! Sam, Dean and Bob gave me tough opposition though! I was lucky to be quite comfortable on the brakes and when Sam left the door ajar I could take advantage of it to claim first! Sam was right on my tail the entire way though.

On a less enthusiastic note, some of the backmarkers were having a hard time not interfering with the people who were lapping them. I realize this is a tight track and the 69's are fast, but still, there are some basic principles which were just not followed. For instance, if you are being lapped, move over. I saw some people stay on the racing line and reduce their speed. Never stay on the racing line and lift off to let someone past. It's just a basic racing thing. Some of the backmarkers were also a bit late spotting us (the front group), but maybe that's just the nature of the track. If you are a backmarker and notice the fast guys quite late, stay calm and just continue racing as usual until a straight comes up and you can move off line. If you try to brake later because fast guys are behind, your lines become warped and you transform into a bit of a moving target to overtake / lap. If you get spooked regardless, take to the grass as a last resort. Most of the time, the speed difference between those lapping and being lapped is not actually that big, it's just when the person being lapped gets nervous and starts behaving erraticly that speed differences get bigger and the chance of something happening gets higher. Bottom line, move over on the next straight and not in the middle of the corner, and never lift off when you're on the racing line :) .

Other than that, great stuff! It was cool to see the entire field getting through the first lap without major incident :) :) .

Sam ,you were just 4 thousands of a second short of taking over the race lap record from Clive :D .

Get well soon Greg. :thumbup1:

Grats to Tommie and the podium places
Without any practice for this race ( a bit of a lame excuse really, coz we have used this track often enough for me to know it!) I opted to use one of the non-winged cars and drove the Cooper for the first time ever. It took a while to get the setup sorted so that I could use that wonderful V12 Mazza engine, but giving away 6 seconds a lap to the quick cars was never going to be good was it?

I was basically dicing with the tail enders and their wings, but quite pleased not to finish dead last.

I think that there is only one overtaking spot on this track and that is into T2 hairpin, and even there you need to be very brave on the brakes, so defending a place is relatively easy if you have a fast enough car around the rest of the track.
I was quite surprised how quickly the front pack came around to lap us tail enders, you guys were really motoring. It was interesting to see just where the winged wonders were gaining so much time and it looked like it was under braking and initial grunt/grip out of the corners.

@ Tommie
In the guidelines for UKGPL regarding being lapped the advice is to STAY on the racing line and make no sudden moves to get out of the way, but ease off on the next available straight to allow the pass to take place smoothly. It is the passing cars responsibility to make a safe pass, but the driver being lapped has an obligation to make that pass as easy as is possible.
Having said that I do try to be aware of cars coming from behind, and Prib is invaluable for that if you are using it. Sometimes I find that it is actually easier to leave the apex of the corner clear for the passing car PROVIDED THAT YOU SEE THEM EARLY ENOUGH and make your intentions clear. If you are smooth enough to cruise around the outside of a corner and allow the leaders to slip through on the inside, no-one loses too much time.
The most important thing is that you let the lapping car know in plenty of time, that you have seen him and communicate this by where you position your car.

Whilst we are on the subject of etiquette, can I make a plea here for more consideration during qualifying. This applies to all of the various mods, not just 69x.

If you are leaving the pits on a qualifying run, please be aware of cars that are just starting a flying lap. YOUR FIRST LAP OUT OF THE PITS COUNTS FOR NOTHING!! so why jump straight onto the racing line and impede someone who is at 100%??  Keep off the racing line, even go onto the grass, but keep out of the way. The same applies if you have made a big mistake on your "fast lap", it is NOT going to be a good time, so get out of the way of other cars who are still trying.
Also, everyone is entitled to a qualifying lap however fast they may, or may not be. Provided that a driver is doing their best and they are on a clean quali lap, they are entitled to the racing line. This may be frustrating for someone who is much faster coming up behind, but that is the lottery of qualifying. You need to find that gap in the traffic if you are going for pole pos, that is part of the art of qualifying in my opinion.

We are lucky with our sim in that going off track or onto the grass does not mess up your tyres, or cause any problems provided that you do not hit anything. So just try and be aware of other cars and give each other room to enjoy the qualification and racing.

lecture over, lunch time over........back to work!!

Grats T, hope you can come back soon G, and a "sorry" to Andreas for our contact on lap 32. Thought you were leaving the inside open for me, then when I tried to check up just slid into you.  :-\

tough race with big speed differences, which caused problems while lapping.

Sorry for standing on the track andi and sorry to Bob Whitwell, i wanted to let you pass on the straight !

Finished the race but could have been better, some accidents without damage and an engine explosion.

First of all: Get well soon Greg! Miss you on the track, mate.

Think I have to say "sorry" Dean. I did leave the inside open for you and was surprised when we collied. But good to see, that it not had some meaning in the end for your Race-Position.

Kein Problem Bastian, to be honest my own mistakes were by far my biggest issue.  Strong pace up-front.  I had to admit when my provisional pole lasted a while I started to get big ideas.  The time was already a pb for me and I didn't think I could go any quicker.  But then the pace picked-up and I was suddenly 4th.  Still I managed to improve by another half second to be a hair behind the fast one in 3rd.  I didn't bother trying to go any better since I was sure I couldn't challenge Sam's time, so went oot on full fuel instead.

I used a high df setup for qual and was wondering whether to take some wing off for the race, but didn't bother.  Not sure if those in-front of me reduced their wings for the race but after the start it was all I could do to stay in the tow...but I did have a few close calls into the final hairpin as Sam seemed to brake a good amount earlier.

After running a few laps in 3rd and vaguely staying in touch, I made a mistake that let Dean by, then made a string of them.  Luckily the pursuers were some way back, which I took full advantage of by having a few more excursions.  I think I lapped Clive about 5 times as I kept going off just after!!!!  Strange to apologise to someone I was lapping but sorry for umm..getting in your way kinda, for a while there!  It got interesting when that Matra appeared (who was that?), from Prib it looked like he was also being lapped but seemed to be making a fight out of it....  No worries though, like I say, made it interesting.

Bob
