Title: UKGPL Season 29 (2015-16) Privateers Trophy (67) - Mont-Tremblant - Feb 7
Post by: Robert Fleurke on February 01, 2016, 04:26:29 PM +0000
Season 29 Privateers Trophy - Round 08 - St. Jovite - Mont Tremblant

Circuit Mont-Tremblant is a 4.26 km (2.65 mi) race circuit about 13 km (8.1 mi) south of the village of Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, Canada. The name of the village of Saint-Jovite was often included in the name of the circuit, but since the village was amalgamated into Mont-Tremblant in the year 2000, it is no longer considered or functions as an independent entity since then.

The first two sections of the circuit were built in 1964 and extended by another mile into September 1965. The extension featured long straights and by virtue of the terrain, a small hill. Nicknamed "the Hump" it gained legendary status during the inaugural 1966 Can Am race. Two drivers in practice found that their cars, both near identical Lola T70 CanAm cars, launched themselves into the air. Both drivers emerged unhurt but were unable to compete in the race. The Canadian winters quickly rendered the track surface very bumpy and as a result, the attrition rate was quite high in the two Canadian Grand Prix Formula One events staged at the circuit. Of the 40 cars entered in those two races (20 each, in 1968 and 1970), 21 reached the checkered flag (with only 16 classified – the rest finishing too far behind the race winners).

Apart from the tracklink below, the track can be found here (http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=121&#entry565) together with graphics update from EB or Cabbalero.

I would have really enjoyed this one. Sorry that I wasn't available to race today.

Fairly low turn out;  maybe there was a new series of Downton Abbey or something?

Nice track  ;D

Thought the coop might be a better race car than my usual brabby , Hadn't driven the coop for quite a while and struggled to find a set up that worked for me here . wasn't too bad in the race but twitchy under braking when the car always seemed to want to swap ends , just about avoided the dancing Billy & Ronnie then had a nice race for a while until the 1st of a few spins , then the engine blew requiring a re set and pits , pushed too hard to try making time up but ran wide hit the barriers and lost a wheel which couldnt be found so had to retire .

Small turn out was possibly due to the track which IMO isn't easy and lots of booby traps awaiting any small mistakes

So grats to the podium boys and all who finished ,
commiserations to those who didnt .   :o

I'd done quite a bit of practice over the past couple of weeks at this very tricky track.  I qualified 3rd, about 3/10 slower than my PB.  The flag man decided to raise and drop his flag with no delay, and I almost missed it.  However, the 2nd place man did miss it (I think) and I went 2nd.  There was a lot of close racing, but unfortunately I got tagged from behind and watched as everyone went past.  Undeterred, we raced on.  I can't remember what order things happened in, but Billy pulled off a super overtake on the outside of the big loop.  I was following Billy and Bernie for a few laps until they both spun at the last hairpin, and I sneaked past.  A couple of laps later, I lost it on T1 and did a 360 spin, uttering a cartoon-esque gasp in the process!  Billy slipped by, and fortunately, I didn't hit anything.  So, ended up on the podium in 3rd.

I had a wobbly first lap and lost touch with the main pack so it was a solitary first half until Bernie hove into view after his SnG for some closer racing but that lasted only for a couple of laps until my engine blew.
On the positive side the problems that I have been having with my G25 didn't recur and to add interest to the pre race practice sessions I did a few laps on the superb Grid Autosport (currently on sale for  £6.24 at Steam) version of the track.

PS The Team Championship is getting interesting - only 3 point difference at the top. come on the soggies :thumbup2:

Shame there weren't more cars on the grid. Admittedly a difficult track but there was some good racing to be had. I noticed Phil quallified but did not start.
I started second on the grid but forgot to select 1st gear. A moment of stupidity  took 15 laps to recover 2nd spot. By this time team mate DC was over 30 secs ahead & didn't make any noticeable errors. At the start the Soggie driven Coopers sneaked past. Unfortunately I ran out of space on the inside of the big loop & touched Ronnie. A couple of laps later I found space on the outside of the loop. Then Bernie over rotated in the hairpin. There was just enough contact to let Ronnie back through. He stayed ahead until a rather scary spin out of T1. All in all quite entertaining.

Grats Dave for the win, Billy and Ronnie for podium! Well done finishers, and points scorers. Only Philippe retired early on. Not sure why Phil didn't start.

I was suspecting the track was not one most drivers would look forward to. It seems Bastian ran out of time. I hope Fran will also race again...

Thanks Axel for server/results/replay duties.

Not sure why Phil didn't start.
My wife has just found the vase that I had accidentally chipped. She wasn't happy, I had to quit to try and make peace.  Sorted now, the vase is still chipped but my PC is intact!   :taz:
