Title: UKGPL Season 29 (2015-16) Works Trophy (67) - Mont-Tremblant - Feb 7
Post by: Robert Fleurke on February 01, 2016, 04:34:38 PM +0000
Season 29 Works Trophy - Round 08 - St. Jovite - Mont Tremblant

Circuit Mont-Tremblant is a 4.26 km (2.65 mi) race circuit about 13 km (8.1 mi) south of the village of Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, Canada. The name of the village of Saint-Jovite was often included in the name of the circuit, but since the village was amalgamated into Mont-Tremblant in the year 2000, it is no longer considered or functions as an independent entity since then.

The first two sections of the circuit were built in 1964 and extended by another mile into September 1965. The extension featured long straights and by virtue of the terrain, a small hill. Nicknamed "the Hump" it gained legendary status during the inaugural 1966 Can Am race. Two drivers in practice found that their cars, both near identical Lola T70 CanAm cars, launched themselves into the air. Both drivers emerged unhurt but were unable to compete in the race. The Canadian winters quickly rendered the track surface very bumpy and as a result, the attrition rate was quite high in the two Canadian Grand Prix Formula One events staged at the circuit. Of the 40 cars entered in those two races (20 each, in 1968 and 1970), 21 reached the checkered flag (with only 16 classified – the rest finishing too far behind the race winners).

Apart from the tracklink below, the track can be found here (http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=121&#entry565) together with graphics update from EB or Cabbalero.

ARGH...save your energy for the next race, this is weird  :-\

...& what I mean is: The track is fun, but it seemed like CB had the same problem. There is plenty of grass, you think you can save the situation if you slip out...but you quickly get a huge shock with all the invisible walls.

Do we have an incorrect version of this track  ???

I tried both updates, not much difference IMO ;) It's just an older add-on track, but has a challenging and interesting lay-out...

Made it 11 laps, which is a massive improvement of late, but came unstuck and three-wheeled my way into a ditch before a bridge.

Apologies to Jethro for dragging him out with my mistake (erm, not the only one at that same corner... ::)), glad to see at least you could continue. Will try to put some more in for the next two, hopefully some better showings will come along ;D ;D. Grats winner and podium, see you at the next one guys.

My goodness, I actually won this race!! I was by no means the fastest in race-trim, Rob and Peter had that pleasure, but thanks to the narrow circuit I was able to hold on.

Just about managed to bag pole, befitting from the Lotus, but that lap was a one-off. There was no way I'd be able to lap at that pace consistently and so it proved once the flag dropped. It was clear Rob was far quicker and much more confident on the brakes throughout the lap, but I managed to get decent exits on most corners which prevented him from passing.

From the sounds of things I squeezed Rob and Peter a bit too close for comfort on some corners. I'll go and watch the replay when it becomes available, but all I can do is apologise and plead to being oblivious.

Of course I'm delighted to have won but it's a real credit to Rob and Peter, despite their faster pace, didn't try anything reckless which could have ended our races. See you all at the next one  :).

Also, get well soon Andreas  :).

I think maybe this is because of what I wrote in the chat, but you did absolutely nothing wrong towards me for that short amount of time I was close to you!.. from my viewpoint it looked like Rob was alongside you (on the outside) braking before the backstraight and you guys touched, but seeing the replay it was Rob who had a little touch from behind and as he so clearly pointed out, that's racing.. Sorry for the comment it was only in reference to Rob pointing out that you guys touched when I was able to sneak by the first time..

Great job defending for 30 laps, that's tough! ;-)

Congrats Sam, Peter, Rob! That's an impressive feat to hold off Rob for 30 laps! Great job by Peter overcoming an early mistake. And it looks like Rob, kept himself in position to capitalize on any mistakes.

The sheer number of laps I've done in the Can Ams here, taught me the track well. But I still don't know a fast and consistent way through T1 in the 67s. T1 bit me twice. Luckily I survived two spins and contact there. I was sure the second spin was going to impale me on the end of the guard rail.

I had a chance to stay close today but I had to be flawless. It's rare I can run a race without a mistake or two. I was going to try to hold off Peter like Sam did to Rob but I lost my rhythm for a little while after lapping Jethro. That quickly led to a spin giving 3rd back to Peter. Two more mistakes later dropped me well back from the leaders.

It was a good race. There seems to have been lots of action. And I'm pleased I finished as well as could realistically hope to finish. Any thing better would require luck, a whole lot of luck when you add 3 mistakes.

I hope you get well soon, Andreas.

Thanks guys.

Brilliant defensive drive Sam, when I touched you that was my mistake, lost slight control under (late) braking, and went to the right a bit...glad you didn't suffer from it...no complaints, you played it fair...I simply wasn't good/brave enough ;)

In a way frustrating not being able to force my way past, or being able to run my pace, but also an enjoyable race, and it's good to see Sam win, well deserved mate! Way to soak up the pressure, sometimes I left my braking rather late, which also bit me a few times, and ultimately gave Peter P2...

But also a great drive by Peter, despite a (half)spin or two had a good enough pace to get back to the leaders twice!

Great to see the top 3 finishing within a second, rather good race in general with decent amount of lead lap finishers!  8) Commiserations to the retirements. Thanks Jethro for server/results/replay duties.

Good recovery Andreas! ;)

Tough track for me. Every corner seems to catch me out in one way or another. Cooper also a handful but happy to have reached the finish, & on the lead lap :)

Had some good racing laps with Jethro & Andreas but like everyone else couldn't find (wouldn't risk) a way past & had to rely on their mistakes to pass. I gained an additional place at the end when Clive spun.
Apart from my cold tyre spin on lap1 I actually had a clean race but it was hard work!

Grats podium, all within a second, impressive.
Cheers :)

A pathetic meet pour moi.  Errors and spins in Q left me a solid 4/10 off my PB.  Most frustrating.

I had a reasonable start and bounced Pelle to tuck in behind Art's Honda.  For some reason, he took the corner combination at the bottom of the hill in an odd fashion and I pulled alongside to nab another spot.  Great!  So far.  This is not a circuit I'm particularly fond of and don't see it as so much of a challenge as rather a contrived series of wierd corners.  On Lap03, a minor slip under throttle put the LR tyre into the dirt verge as I lined up for Namerow and I spun.  Arced across the road and drilled the barrier hard enough to shear off the RR corner.  I sat there for a bit wondering if I was KO'd or not before it became apparent that it was game over.  Swell.

Greg...  I don't believe that you can get speared into the leading face of the grail in T1 as the strange, strange build of this circuit blends invisible walls directly parallel to the barrier in T1.

Pulled down the server replay and just had to watch the fierce battle up front for the podium slots.  WOWZER!  Great driving, gys!  Grats to Sam on the victory and to Peter & Rob for such a close and thrilling finish.  The stuff of legends!  :)

Grats to Sam on a well fought victory!
Was supposed to go to a superbow event so I hadn't done much practice, but fell sick on the day and decided to stay home.. Got a little practice online before the race but not much so I was pleased to set my fastest lap in Qual for 3rd..

Great fun in the race as Greg put pressure on me resulting in some small mistakes and him snatching 3rd, he then spinning in T1 and me later able to catch up with Sam fighting with Rob, they touch and Rob goes wide before the backstraight and I can snatch 2nd, went all in on trying to pass Sam straight away but only resulted in me going off being too aggresive on braking.. Managed to catch up with them again just before the end and Rob goes wide in the tight T-secondlast on the penultimate lap and I can snatch 2nd again, made a mess of my last lap so couldn't put any pressure on Sam who picks up the flag for what most have been a gruelling defensive win with Rob on his tail from practically start to finish, well done!

Some easy Monza straight will be a welcome relief after two challenging tracks in a row :-P

Just viewed the replay. Great entertainment  :).

However, I do feel I owe you an apology Rob for the squeeze on lap 21. Typically I would leave a car's width on the outside but I drifted out more than I realised. Glad we both made it through to the end after that  :).

Big Grats Sam, PA & RF  :thumbup2:

1. Thank you for help with the update, but why is the track made with so much grass...when it can not be used  ???

Practice:
Tested the first crash in Eagle because I really need many points. In the last minute I changed my mind - because I thought I would use too many coins if it ended in the crash - & chose Ferrari.

Qual:
DOH, car #13...I was scared before I came out of the pit, & busy building setup, there was already a strange shadow  :o

Race:
:sleep1: my worst start, yes I slept, embarrassing & more waved goodbye.
Coming behind a McHonda, is ready to attack. yes, I'm close, but gets a shock when Artiglietti spins around & I could feel it, GPL registered it as we hit, a huge Sorry from me  :'(

Fell further down, was now behind 2xCooper, the first was red, Jani. This was scary, you were a sec, you were away for a sec...sometimes away several secs & I thought you had disco...but hey, you were back. I did not dare get close & had to wait for Jani drove in the sand.  ;D

More than happy to reach the finish & get some points on a...'It was not my day'

Edit: Discovering...this was a surprise

Fastest Laps:

1. PA: 1:37.953
2. Me: 1:37.982

It should have ended much better  :turned:

Lol Pelle, I think you recall the events in the wrong order: you can feel the hit and then Artiglietti spins around.. ;) ;D. You serenely punted me off trying to go for a gap that was always going to close, with zero overlap at turning point, and some (I could see the entirety of your car in my mirror...). This put me dead last with a bent car.

Brilliant starts often look better than they really are when you watch them in the replay, as in online racing they usually require a lot of collaboration from others...Anyway apologies accepted of course, these things do happen, see you guys in Monza.

P.S.
I cant open the server replays with my winzip, anyone knows if I can change the file extension with something that does the trick? I think I cured this way a similar problem some years ago

Yes, I can see now it sounds weird, but it was a weird feeling  :D
Normally, I never run close to one where the chance of warp is too big (As Jani) but I had no trouble seeing you.

Either you try to download the Server Replay again, or update your WinZip (I use WinZip)...when you see the Server Replay, you will understand what I mean & discover...I hit you not, it was a small warp.  :( But of course, I take the blame on my shoulder & said Sorry.

This is not a circuit I'm particularly fond of and don't see it as so much of a challenge as rather a contrived series of weird corners.

It's a difficult circuit that's always waiting to destroy another car. I like the track somewhat but every time I see an upcoming race here, my first thought is, "oh hell!"

Greg...  I don't believe that you can get speared into the leading face of the grail in T1 as the strange, strange build of this circuit blends invisible walls directly parallel to the barrier in T1.

I've impaled myself before on the rail on the left just past the crest of the first hill. I don't know how though. I felt it was going to happen again the second time I spun in T1. It's good to know there is actually an invisible barrier that helps instead of hindering you. :)
