Season 30 - CANM66 Fun Race - Targa Florio

Please end your race lap after the finish line within 250m!

The race will be run under INT rules and you have a free car choice.
You have unlimited shift+r !

I was doing a practice lap, and I was feeling pretty good until I hit a police car near the end of the lap.  :whistling:

Is this going to be 60FPS?

I've just installed the Mod so am trying to get to grips with a vaguely sane setup at the Mo.
I quite like the Genie, although should really run the McLaren-Elva if only because I know one of it's many owners  8)

Yes Tim UKGPL does all races with 60fps  ::)

CANM66 uses the 60fpsV2newmod  ;)

I think the car choice is not so important for the Targa, as the experience and knowledge of the track counts more.

I will not take the ChapE, as the 2 gears would be a bigger handicap here...

The server time ran down and Mark J refused to get off track.  He ran for 5m after time lapsed.  I'm not going to wait while some other guy shows no consideration whatsoever for other members.

Doni: MJ was still on his qual lap. From the race post: "...GPL will shut the quali after ~11min overtiming...". Normally, it's a lot shorter than this (about 1 1/2 laps worth of time).

Normal mad first mile, then loneliness. C'est le Targa.

Oops.  I thought that was the accepted procedure from the original post - and at that point I wasn't sure if we were actually racing or just qualifying.  I think I was actually watching Doni on Prib to see that it wasn't just me finishing the qual lap by myself.  Sorry about that Doni.  I shouldn't have bothered anyway, I was far too rusty to drive the track without hitting something every minute anyhow.

Congrats to Greg for the win!

Yes, I was aware of that adder to the GCR's, Dean, but...  It's a royal pain to have to standby waiting for someone to finish a lap.  As I'm sure you're aware, I made mention of a policy limiting post session running in qualifying in the S29 Review.

My post above is not a personal dig at Mark.  He and I go way back as you are no doubt aware.  From where MJ was on track when I finally threw in the towel and left the server, I would have expected him to need another 5m to complete his lone lap for a total of 10m or so past time expired.  I just don't think that this is proper and as a club, we really do need to limit running after the checker has flown in Q.

Congrats Tim and Axel!

I disagree with Doni. Impatience and consideration are not synonymous.

As GPL will shut the quali after ~11min overtiming,

I noticed this in my track.ini.

[ statistics ]
reference_value = 2130.0

That is the number of seconds you are allowed to complete a lap after time expires in qualifying. 2130/60=35.5 minutes. I was watching Mark when time expired. I knew he wasn't likely to complete his lap within 11 minutes from where he was when time expired. I never thought he'd finish the lap. I didn't mind waiting though. I enjoyed checking out the scenery while Mark drove. It's the first time I ever noticed Ginetto standing on the curb in Campofelice. :) I've always been too busy driving to notice. I apologize for chatting before Mark finished.

I also found you can drive up on the Ferrari car carrier that sits on the right when exiting the pits. :)

I'm pleased with my drive. I had one lap shortly before qualifying started. I have my first pit stall located on the first straight in Campofelice. So while I was waiting for qualifying to start, I got my 5th gear set correctly for the Buonfornello Straight. I got another lap in qualifying and then a 3rd lap in the race. Not bad at all for little practice. But I do at least 2 laps every month working on my GT times and setups here.

Finally I have the course memorized well. I rarely forget where I am on the track now, and I'm getting to point I can "see" the upcoming turns. This event showed me two places I'm still not anticipating correctly. I'm braking in two places where I should be holding the throttle even and letting the lateral Gs reduce my speed.

That was a good race lap. I quickly scanned my replay to see how many mistakes I made. I hit a wall 5 times, spinning once. 2 times were a light graze that a real car likely would have tolerated with little more than a loss of paint. I keep trying to get a GT around this track cleanly. There is only one World Record lap for the GTs on GPLRank. I hope someday I can post some more WRs even though they won't be the fastest laps. I've managed 20 minutes without contact or an off. Now I just need to learn to do the full 35 minutes.

The M1B actually seemed a little easier than the GTs. I can point the nose in much better with the throttle. The key is not using too much throttle. I was hoping I could run my fastest lap ever and break into the 34:00's. I got close. I was only 10 seconds off my Porsche 910 time. Since I was stoked from the event, I decided to give the 712M another try after the event. I may have run a cleaner lap with it than I did with the M1B during the race. I got my first 34:00. 34:17.28 with the 712M. :) Now that Axel has got me obsessed with this track again, I'll have to give the M8F a try soon. With all the cars in GPL, this track alone could keep me occupied for years. 5 years of trying to master the GTs here has limited me to less than 10 laps in all the other mods combined. Maybe by the time I can drive this track like Nurburgring, there will be a 1970 or 1971 Alfa Type 33/3 to drive too. That's one of my biggest wishes for GPL, to drive a 3 liter Type 33 at Targa Florio.

Thanks guys.

I've really enjoyed my time around the Targa these past few days. I used a default set-up on my first practice lap (the day before the race). Then I moved up to Tommie's set-up for the qualify session. Thanks Tommie.

In first few minutes of the race, I was following David. He went wide on a left hand corner. I saw what happened early enough to slow properly for the corner. However, I could not keep from following him off track. I rejoined without checking prib. I owe an apology to Dean for merging as he was passing me. After that, I was happy that I minimized my mistakes a little more than in my practice, and I carried a little more speed in the corners.

Thanks all,
WC

I'm slightly ashamed to admit that I haven't driven Targa since recording that lap for my GTRank - I honestly don't know why as this race reminded me of why it's such an awesome circuit.

I'm happy with 2nd given Greg's training regime here - I have to admit being tempted now to try and re-learn it again and go for some proper records  ;D
