Post by: Cookie on May 29, 2016, 05:43:54 PM +0100
CanAm 66 race at Stardust

Celebrating the new 1966 CanAm mod and its 50th year anniversary at the Stardust International Raceway.

Long time gone track, Stardust was built in 1965 by the Stardust Hotel and Casino.
It hosted the season finale of the Can-Am Championship between 1966 and 1968.
In 1969 the Stardust hotel was sold and the new owners largely abandoned the track; leased for a while then the whole land was sold. In 1970 track was closed and Spring Valley community took its place.

These cars must be the most sensitive to setup changes I've ever driven!
Even the 69x's aren't as touchy ;D
Still no idea what I'm driving tonight or elsewhere but at least I have made them less evil than the setup I had for Targa 8)

I had a freeze in quali  ::)

For the race I had no concentration and made lots of mistakes :-[

I had a good time racing today. My concentration was good for most of the race. I made three small mistakes. I enjoyed the competition from David R., Dean, Bastian, Fran and Carlos. Everyone else was able to escape into the distance. Then I was able to move over as the leaders put me a lap down. No screen freezes on my PC this week.

These cars are drifting machines. A lot of fun. I had not adjusted Tommie's set-up much, just made the gears a little taller.
Good Race everyone, and thanks Cookie!

Lucky, from the result I see that i was the only one with a freeze during the race. The only satisfaction was to view the "ice cream" Lola into the race.I added this car to the online 6 years ago and is the reproduction of one car appeared during a South African race.
The CA66 seem more easy to drive compared to the CA71 but,for me,the breaking at the end of the long semi straight(T8)was a challeng.
My compliment to all the pilots with a time under 1,36,i don't understand how is possible to do this time,is out of my possibilty.

I enjoyed that - evidently my practice on Friday lunchtime payed off as I was able to out-qualify a lot of people in 'faster' cars.
The only fly in the ointment for me was when Cookie managed to muscle past me at the start - Once my tyres were up to temp and pressure I started pulling him in again but I could see passing him would be very difficult if he didn't make a mistake. His car could happily out-accelerate mine so it was likely going to come down to me getting a good enough exit onto the back straight to draft him and then do a dive under braking at the far end - I'd noticed Axel seemed to struggle much more than I was when braking through that slight bend  ;)
Luckily for me he fell off on his own so all I had to do was hold on and keep putting clean laps in in-case someone behind got into a rhythm and started gaining.

Going into this championship I didn't feel confident as I found the default setup to be wildly different to what I normally aim for - I think on average I was taking 4 to 5 seconds off my lap times once I had found something that worked, and as I mentioned earlier these really respond to changes - Once I'd decided on the Mk1 and set to playing with the setup properly I knocked another second or so off my times.
Looking forward to Spa, although I suspect that will be a war of attrition rather than a race

Congrats to Robert and Greg, and also to all of the finishers.
Commiserations Francesco

I've just noticed something funny with the results - LM2 has this down as a non-championship race?

As far as I see it, is classified as a champ race ::)

But it does not show in the Championship table :o

Not sure guys...hopefully Dave Gymer can figure out what's wrong...

Was a fun race, especially the first 10 laps following Greg. Couldn't pass him when he defended at the right place (inside backstraight), and I didn't want to pull off a risky move at T1...then Greg made a mistake and I could manage the pace to the finish, doing a few fast laps in between...

Well done Greg, if you hadn't made that mistake, you'd prolly won this race...excellent pace by Tim in the M1A! Thanks all for racing, sorry to see Fran having a freeze...

Congrats Rob and Tim! I tried to keep Rob busy.

I'm happy to finish. After a screen freeze in qualifying, I was worried I wouldn't finish. A disco in the race would have made me angry. With our recent Lemans testing, it's been happening too much lately.

I wasn't really looking to take the lead early. My only thought early was, try to open a gap on Tim as soon as possible. The lead seemed as good a place as any. I was a little worried about entering T1. Prib was showing Rob 12 meters or yards behind me when I wanted to turn in. I hoped that was enough room to sweep across in front of him. I gave it everything I had the first 10 laps. I almost lost it at least 3 times. Finally I got sideways exiting the T6 hairpin. I could have fought the car more to stay on track but I didn't want to risk causing an accident. I also felt a like break to recover would be helpful. Unfortunately by the end of the backstraight I was giving it everything I had again. I was desperate to get into Rob's tow. I clipped the orange post inside of the final turn and spun. I should have been a little more patient but at that point I felt my pace wasn't good enough to really challenge Rob so I was gambling. I pushed hard for most of the race. I couldn't make much headway against Rob but I kept him in a position where he couldn't really afford a spin. Rob, I doubt I could have won if I hadn't made two mistakes on one lap but I could have been closer. :)

That was an excellent drive by Rob. I like when you fast guys show as much patience and discipline as you do speed. I was a little worried at times that Rob might get surprised and hit me under braking for T2, T6, T8, and T10. He seemed much better than me in those 4 places. After a few laps I wasn't concerned much with that anymore since I figured Rob knew where I was slow and would compensate for it. I was defending as you mentioned Rob. There was no way you could pass me on the outside in T8.

I kept my car fairly clean. I don't remember hitting any polos although I may have clipped one in the esses early in the race. The only contact I do remember, is hitting the inside post in the final turn. I also pleased to see I did better than Donohue did. He finished P3 in 1966. He was the first driver that I was a fan. :)

Nice pace by Tim too. I'm glad I had an extra 45 hp. I needed it. :)

I wondered about the race results being listed as non-championship too. I was a bit annoyed seeing that, thinking I should have used the Genie instead.

Thanks guys. It was good fun. I'm getting myself in good shape with these cars. All I really need now is practice driving in the tow. I'm probably still lacking in that aspect.

It was good to see Rob and Tim racing on Friday. It's a shame Mark missed it. I thought he'd be here. It would have been nice to see Clive, Tommie, and Jani too. We would have had a large field then.
