Post by: Robert Fleurke on June 15, 2016, 02:44:47 PM +0100
Season 30 Professionals Trophy – Round 2 – Pau

The Pau Grand Prix (French: Grand Prix de Pau) is a motor race held in Pau, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department of southwestern France. The French Grand Prix was held at Pau in 1930, leading to the annual Pau Grand Prix being inaugurated in 1933. It was not run during World War II.

The race takes place around the centre of the city, where the streets are closed to form a circuit, and its 68 runnings have variously conformed to the rules of Grand Prix racing and Formula One, Formula Two and Formula 3000, Formula Three, Formula Libre, sports car racing, and touring car racing.

The winningest driver at Pau is Jim Clark, with 4 wins.

Had a PR in quali, but Tristan was simply too fast in the Lotus. No chance to follow him ofcourse, and lost a bit of focus running alone -hitting the wall-. Got lucky with minor damage, but second half of the race was solid. Wished Tris also would have ran a slower car this season, that would have made things more interesting from  my point of view...

Hoping for bigger grids coming races, but apart from Tris, the quali times were pretty close. Grats Tristan, well done Clive and finishers. ;)

What a twisty track!  ;D

I've never driven here before so must say I'm chuffed with a 4th in the Waza (Even if it was only due to Roo running out of fuel).
Even better was that I managed to stay in the action for the first 3rd or so while chasing down Clive and Ronnie.
Very sorry for the rotation at the hairpin Ronnie, I was already along side when you lost it under power and couldn't quite back out in time - Or rather I did but lag made certain that I didn't if you follow. Just to be on the safe side I thought I should let you continue in front.

After that point I was just focussing on tidy and consistent lines without working the tyres too hard. It was very easy to cook the Honda's rears after any excessive sliding.
I was about managing to stay constant with Roo for the most part but had resigned myself to 5th, then my luck came in as he ran down to fumes 3 laps before the finish.

All in all an enjoyable race :)

I had raced here before & enjoyed the track. I didn't get any practice prior to race day so I just stuck with my previous setup & tried to find the rhythm again. With hindsight I should have changed the final drive for a little more drive out of the corners & not been so aggressive with the fueling  :cursing:
I was dropping time to Robert from the get go but would have settled for a podium.
I was disappointed to spin at T2 & let Clive, Ronnie & Tim past. Having re-passed Ronnie & Tim when they had contact I couldn't catch Clive.
Finally ran out of fuel with half a lap to go  :censored:

Grats all, thanks admins :)

Even though I have a long history with this track, I don't find a flow here ::)
So I just wanted to finish, wich was hard work with a wheel that seems to have lost the center...

I first read about a F2 race here in one of the first motorsport magazines "sport-auto" in  ~1967-68 and remember pictures of a blue Matra MS5 in one of the hairpins. Some years later (1974) I visited Pau with my 2CV in holidays.

Grats to Tris and Robert and anyone who finished this challenging race.
Maybe I should have taken the BT7 too?  But I have run slower cars for the past few seasons and thought I would treat myself with something a little easier this time. I still avoided, what I feel, are the outright fastest cars and opted for the BT11 as a solid chassis.

It is a long time since we have raced at Pau and I was a little worried about its reputation for discos and freezes. A great track IMHO but needs to be treated like Monaco,,,,survival first, and a a very predictable handling car are the prorities.

The front row qually times were stunning. I had looked up the GPLRank world records earlier, just to get an idea of what times might be competitive, so I was gobsmacked when the first 4 cars were up to 2 secs faster!!! :notworthy: :notworthy:

It is always difficult to pass around here ( just like Monaco) and this race was no different. Tris and Robert set off at a cracking pace and I was secretly hoping that they were pushing too hard  ::). I could see Roo in 3rd place, but Ray defended his 4th spot for lap after lap. I felt that I was quicker, but I just could not find a passing place. He made a small mistake at T1 and I got alongside up the hill but Ray held the inside line for T2 and it was back to follow my leader!
Tim was trying hard to stay in touch with his Honda and I was worried that if he got any closer I might have to spend too much time watching my mirrors, so I ahd to find a way past Ray! I eased right up to his gearbox and tried to hassle him into a mistake, but despite a few ragged moments he refused to yield, until he went too deep into T1 and lost momentum....this was my chance so I stuck my car tight around the inside and nailed the gas. I think we bumped wheels on the exit but neither car was fired into the scenery and we both kept going. This time I just had the edge into T2 and had stolen 3rd place at last.
Settled down to a few fast smooth laps to build a gap and then just watched the gaps on prib as a Ronnie, Roo and Tim battled it out behind. Tris and Robert were too far ahead to get at unless they made a mistake, which of course they didn't so I cruised home for a comfortable 3rd place and a glass of champagne.

Grats again to Tris, Rob and Clive. While this track suits the BT7 that was still a great drive Rob and welcome back on track.

For sure you were faster Clive but I really enjoyed the racing until that small mistake finally gave you the opportunity to complete the pass. As for the little clash on the way past I thought the battle deserved it  8)

Likewise Tim. Great racing and the spin was no more than I deserved when I got it slightly wrong at the hairpin. I would not have complained if you had carried on but thanks for waiting like a gent

Its a shame the grid, like at Brands, was a bit thin on the ground as while the track may not have been very popular there was certainly some good racing going on. See you all at the next one.

It's true the BT7 didn't have as much handicap than at faster tracks, but still struggling at tight tracks. Because I can run a better strg ratio than at Monaco, and because of the more flowing lay-out, I kind of like Pau ;) Tristan's quali time was superb!

Quali was quite exciting, and close for P2-P6 or so, with changing positions a lot. My first lap was a bit slowish, hope I didn't upset the cars behind after the start. Ran with lower tirepressures than normal. For a moment Clive was gaining on me, and that was a wake up call to push a bit more as well. I'm sure you will finish in front of me coming races, at faster tracks ;)

Cheers Ray, unlucky, it's great to be racing again with full force :) Let's hope the grids will grow a bit bigger, but as always enjoying racing with 65 mod, my favo after original 67s ;)

Thanks Axel for server duties and replay :)

PS: not 100% sure we can run at Assen67, but hopefully the latest sky.mip fix will (re)solve any issues...I have a test at it coming Saturday and will decide after that if the track is reliable enough at 60FPS...

TO go back to the race, I had a perfect setup ( inusual for me ) and I like the track ... but Rob is not far away and I have to stay very focus to avoid any mistake....a good start and after some laps, happy to see the gap growing slowly slowly....till the finish :).....
RdV à Assen ...where it will be not the same storie agains honda and brm......
well done podium and finishers
