Title: UKGPL Season 30 (2016) Can Am Trophy (66CA) - Mont-Tremblant - Jul 1
Post by: Cookie on June 29, 2016, 01:22:27 PM +0100
CanAm 66 Trophy Race 3 at St. Jovite

Celebrating the new 1966 CanAm mod and its 50th year anniversary at St. Jovite - Mont Tremblant.

Circuit Mont-Tremblant is a 4.26 km (2.65 mi) race circuit about 13 km (8.1 mi) south of the village of Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, Canada. The name of the village of Saint-Jovite was often included in the name of the circuit, but since the village was amalgamated into Mont-Tremblant in the year 2000, it is no longer considered or functions as an independent entity since then.

The first two sections of the circuit were built in 1964 and extended by another mile into September 1965. The extension featured long straights and by virtue of the terrain, a small hill. Nicknamed "the Hump" it gained legendary status during the inaugural 1966 Can Am race. Two drivers in practice found that their cars, both near identical Lola T70 CanAm cars, launched themselves into the air. Both drivers emerged unhurt but were unable to compete in the race. The Canadian winters quickly rendered the track surface very bumpy and as a result, the attrition rate was quite high in the two Canadian Grand Prix Formula One events staged at the circuit. Of the 40 cars entered in those two races (20 each, in 1968 and 1970), 21 reached the checkered flag (with only 16 classified – the rest finishing too far behind the race winners).

Apart from the tracklink below, the track can be found here (http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=121&#entry565) together with graphics update from EB or Cabbalero.

A practice Server has been available at 'Hauls2' , but be aware and beware, motors provided there are Advanced Trainer only!.  Either that, or the track has grown a bit longer? :D

Check you're connecting to the IP address in Cookies post and that you have the password correct.
Server is up fine as I just joined it :)

If it was a connection time out then just try again. They happen sometimes in my experience

Which one? 333 or 359?
Although to be honest I think you can get away with re-using the same setups across different versions of the same chassis and only really change the gearing.

Any 2 speed gearbox would be best for Francesco. :'(

High performance machinery , high performance track, but low turnout for a big event.  I was unsure I'd have a good enough framerate to race, but t'was glitch-free and fun-filled throughout.  The uncluttered turnout may have helped. ::)

With a well sorted setup, and a Works Mclaren, I was able to cling to 3rd pace 'til half race.  But battling wheel to wheel, I struck a sudden problem.  An invisible wall lurking just inside the 1st right hander, where I was suddenly struck by the instantaneous difference between 100mph, and 0mph - this is not to be recommended!  In a single lap, I went from Cookie cutter, to wooden spoon beater.  Grumble!

Some good fun regardless in some quality company.  Deadly track for anyone not up to the task, back in 1966.  There must be more up to the challenge, here at Ukgpl?  If not, it will require a tough track and a full handicap  to enjoy some close dicing from my seat.  Medium fast drivers required - podium optional. :P

High performance machinery , high performance track, but low turnout for a big event.

I think quite a few of our drivers are at Brands for the JS trophy presentation/race weekend, St Jovite is such a fun (but hard!) track that we would normally get a bigger grid I'd have thought.

Fran - I'll have a look to see if I have anything specifically for that car. If I don't I'll knock something together from a variant I have driven. It won't be perfect as I haven't had a proper go in the faster chassis' yet but should be a good base to work from :)

Is your email the one in your profile?

Maybe come to make some practice Online Fran? but before next race we wait many weeks.

I think quite a few of our drivers are at Brands for the JS trophy presentation/race weekend . . . .

Yes, my mind was off in Canada and not in Kent, where one hopes the rain stayed away.   That's taking the pre-race homework rather seriously - suspect they'll all be even faster, when Brands comes to Can-Ams. ;D

Congrats Tim and Carlos! Excellent job guys. I didn't think I'd see anybody dominate so well in a Genie. :)

I have no real clue what is wrong with me on this track. A second off Tim's pace wouldn't surprise me. 2-3 seconds off the pace is embarrassing. I tried cutting my spring rates in half for a test after the race. I didn't get any faster and my car's suspension didn't stop bouncing. I've experienced this a little bit in the past but nothing like what was happening here.

If you want to watch something funny, watch me in the replay through some of the turns. The car was bouncing so much in the turns just before Axel stopped, I almost wrecked from laughing at it. 1/3 of the time the car bounces side-to-side I was getting heavy kickback in the steering wheel. At many points, I thought I was rallying. Almost every lap I was getting severe kickback in the steering wheel through T1 and the sharp left after going under the bridge. The replay seems much less dramatic than when live, but it's still very noticeable.

I had somewhat of a battle going with Axel. We both made mistakes keeping the other somewhat close. He had me beat until he stopped late for a reset. I tried as hard as I could to get in his tow late in the race but never succeeded.

Thanks guys. See you next time.
