Title: UKGPL Season 30 (2016) Privateers Trophy (67) - Estoril - Aug 14
Post by: Billy Nobrakes on August 09, 2016, 10:22:21 PM +0100
Season 30 Privateers Trophy – Round 4 –Estoril71

Welcome back to GPL racing from the summer break. The summer football tournament was won by Portugal so rather coincidental that we visit that country for Round 4. the track has a modern layout, having hosted the Portuguese grand prix from 1984 to 1996. The lap record is held by Britain’s Damon Hill. We won’t get anywhere  near 1,14 with the 67 cars but it will be good to get back to racing.

Race List = iGOR
Server = UKGPL_8
IP = see iGOR
Race date = Sunday 14-08-16
Time = 21:00 UK time (21:00 GMT)
Track = Estoril (http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=1193)
Race length = 27 1aps (50 minutes)
Variant = 1967
60fps patch used   = 60fpsV2newmod
Damage Model = Advanced
Qualifying time = 30 minutes

Replays Available here (ftp://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/Replays/Archive/Season30/Grads_Privs)
Special Note – I am having great difficulty downloading the replays from the temporary site – Sendspace. As such there will be some delays in publishing the moderation reports from some races.

Driver lists can be found at the Privateers Trophy page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=549&theme=6)

HANDICAPPING
The tokens system remains for all drivers.
In the interest of having a competitive championship the faster drivers are requested to voluntarily select car that suits your ability, from Race 1. If you are consistently qualifying at the front of the grid,  finishing on the podium & recording fastest lap then you should be not be taking a faster car.
The championship will be reviewed after Race 3. Drivers may then be allocated to one of the following handicap groups
Group 1 BRM, Honda, or Cooper,
Group 2 as above + Brabham
Group 3 as above + Ferrari
For Round 4 the following handicap applies
David Rainier & Jani Posta – Group 3.

Drivers are permitted one Reset / Shift R per race, followed by a compulsory Stop & Go within two laps. If you take your reset on the last lap 15 seconds will be added to your time. A second Shift R will result in Disqualification unless it is the direct result of the first incident e.g. hit when respawning.
If you are the first car entering the pit lane to take your SnG aim to bring the car to a halt alongside the last pit stall - closest to the exit. As soon as your car is stationary you can go. You won't be penalised if you stop a little short or beyond the pit stall.
In the event that more than one car takes a SnG at the same time the following cars can perform their Stop & Go in line.
No overtaking in the pit lane.

Until the number of registered drivers exceeds grid capacity drivers may join the server as soon as it appears in IGOR.

Drivers are required to complete 50% distance to score points.

There is no Red Zone for this series, moderating will be on reported incidents only. Please remember that an additional 1 place penalty is awarded for Lap 1 incidents.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

Password: see above

David Rainier & Jani Posta – Group 3.

Why Jani ? He is only 5 th on the championship.

Just to know ...

David, Jani did not score points at Jarama but was very competitive at Monaco & Riverside in the Cooper. The handicap is partly points & partly skill levels.

I'm okay with Group 3. I planned to drive Cooper all season.

I've just had a short training session, I haven't driven this track since 2005 :o First two turns are like Kyalami, the other parts are StJovite, except last turn which is Riverside :D

1:51 at the moment in the Cooper. I aim a low 1:50 but the race will be about keeping the car far from that deep/sticky gravel. Good luck everyone! :)

After a very long absence from GPL, I would like to take part in this race. I've voted in the registration thread. Anything else I should do?

Welcome Syd.  I'm just one of the guys, but can suggest you try joining a practice Server from IGOR, before racetime.   There's usually one provided race evening, and maybe a day early.  If successful, try following another car a lap or two.

Password will appear at top of race page, 24hrs before racetime.  You've joined the slower of our 2 classes, so presume you've compared laptimes at a track or two.  Happy hunting!  8)

Welcome Syd

The server is running at iGOR

Test it and make shure you have checked the right options in GEM+

Just tested it. I was able to connect manually via mp screen. Nobody else was on, I drove a few laps in the brabham, I was around 1.51.

Welcome Syd

(https://picload.org/image/rrccrgig/gem.jpg)

What are these options :

head movement
Ffb2

Never saw them  ???

I think the only mandatory option to join the race is 60fpsv2newmod.

Where have you been David?  Get the head movement patch from SRMZ - you will like it! Maybe look at the video from a maddog first?  Also a good discussion on trail braking ATM. ;D

Brr made a imo better ForceFeedback patch "ffb2" (http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=4226&#entry30768) to avoid all unnecessary damping effects ;)

Quote from: brr
The ffb update does allow nonzero damping values in Core.ini, but everyone using such values should be very careful. The way damping works, as far as I understand it, is by adding a small value to the force which is opposite to the rate of change. So if the force is increasing, damping adds a negative term and vice versa. This becomes unstable when there are rapid changes, like hitting the armco. I tracked the ffb values briefly and found that they shoot through the roof (five-figure torque values) when hitting an armco if damping is used. My ffb patch removes other kind of damping, which amplifies the effect. So to be safe, start with quite small values and increase gradually. The damping effects are nice, but they are likely to be oscillations of the damping equations. The damping correction overshoots, and then overshoots back in the other direction etc..

Well, I can only assume that David and myself have been in a black hole!! I have never heard of these extra bits either. Head movement?? ffb2 ?? no letterbox???.
I suspect that David is like me and only looks at the UKGPL forum for race threads etc, I very rarely visit SRMZ unless directed there for some specific purpose.
Maybe one of you guys who knows about these things could post a list of brief explanations and links on the Announcements Page so that those of us who are not "in the know" can catch up?
I was only aware of the 60fps patches and some comments made about the refuelling patch recently.  :-\ So it makes me wonder how many other things some of us have missed. Is there a comprehensive list of these patches anywhere?

Not bad for first GPL race in over 5 years :).
I qualified 3rd, but lost one spot at the start. Top 4 were running close in the early laps, and we got away from the rest of the field. After a few laps third made a mistake, and I was through, running close to two leading coopers. But it didn't last, as I blew the engine, had to make a SnG and fell to 7th. I made my way through the field slowly and I got back as far as 4th by the end.

This track need some flagger.During the race was impossible to understand if there was the leader behind me or some other.
Specially in the evening i have difficult to check pribluda,i'm myopic and the ditsance of the screen is a tragedy;not enough distant for the
glasses but too distant to allow the eyes to work without glasses.

.In a race ,to check pribluda,i was gone out of the track in a straight ;D

I chose my least favourite car, the horrible twitchy Brabham - and to compound it all, it turned out Ligier blue!  ::)
Qualified 6th, nearly a second slower than my PB.  Got the jump on Billy at the start, but after a few laps I made a mistake and he disappeared into the sunset. Then Syd eased past me easily, and I endured about 15 laps on my own. Finished 6th.

Pretty boring circuit, I feel.  No corners which felt in any way satisfying.

Good to see another old campaigner (Syd) back at UKGPL.
Whilst I don't think Estoril is anyone's favourite track it is rather different to the typical lay-out of 60's era tracks. It seemed rather well suited to the Cooper & looks like Jani & Philippe had a good battle at the front.
If nothing else it produced a consistent finish. Other than David & Syd swapping places everyone else finished where they started.
My race was fairly solid. Avoided the sticky gravel traps for the whole race, lost one place at the start but managed to nick that back when Ronnie span. Edged up to 4th when Syd dived off into the pits for a SnG but he clawed his way back after a few laps.

Yes that contact on L16 was unavoidable but unfortunate as it ended the race between us which was good fun. But i don't think it affected the final result.

An epic new PB in qualy put me on pole (thanks for the car Robert!), though I doubted I could keep the same pace in the race. Wheelspin costed me a position at the start but I was back in P1 after a few laps. This track is a horror place to race but I kept the car on the asphalt and avoided any serious damage. Luckily the engine problems did not occur this time.

Thanks for the race Philippe! Well done everyone for finishing!

You are right,also for me is much more fun if there is the battle on the track but sometime error are possible.Woithout you the rest of the race was tedious,i have finished it only for obligation but without fun.

Cooper was not A punishment !,
I imagine "Jani the great" has A problem with his car, because I can follow you. But I make 2 or 3 mistake, and so I decide to keep the second place.
Very difficult track.
Thanks for the "staff" Ukgpl, with all this good times on this season.

On the season standings page, this race is not listed. Was it a non-championship round?

Also, in my driving history, this race is listed as DNF. Bug?

Not much to say about this track or the race , pretty unspectacular on both counts,  though I was hampered by a distinct lack of practise .

Grats to the podiums  :)
