Title: UKGPL Season 30 (2016) Historic Trophy (66) - Zandvoort - Sep 4
Post by: Phil Thornton on August 28, 2016, 10:57:13 PM +0100
Season 30 Historics Trophy – Round 5 – Zandvoort

For the fifth round of the season we go to Circuit Park Zandvoort in the Netherlands. On 7 August 1948, the first race was held on the new permanent Zandvoort circuit. Soon more races followed on the course, with the first official Formula 1 Grand Prix becoming a milestone in 1952. Up until the mid-eighties, heroes like Alberto Ascari, Juan Manuel Fangio, Stirling Moss, Graham Hill, Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, James Hunt, Nelson Piquet and Alain Prost braved the challenging course in the Dutch dunes and won at Zandvoort. After the Grand Prix of 1985, the Formula 1 left Zandvoort, but the seaside resort and its impressive race track were not forgotten. Many years after the last Grand Prix, the ‘racing drivers of the day’ still talk about their experience on the race track where the challenging corners ‘separated the men from the boys’.

This will be a 3 Litre event.

Something of an experimental race for me. Pribulda no longer works on my PC (thanks to a Windows update) so I was going to have to rely on the pit-board & my mirrors. I was a bit concerned about how things work out when the leaders got near to lapping me. If I avoided any mistakes there was an outside chance I would not get lapped.
One other issue I have with the 66 mod is the clutch pedal on my G27 rig does not work (its fine for other mods). I qualified a little better than expected but a slow non-clutch start left me in last place at T1. Just before the disco I was running slightly behind a group of 3 cars & it looked like there might be some good racing.
Interesting that several drivers took 2L cars, particularly Tristan who looked like he would take the BT11 / BRM home in first place.

That was shaping up to be a fun race.
I almost opted for the 2l Brab BRM myself because that car is really quick ( as Tris demonstrated ) and handles like a dream. Zandvoort suits it perfectly, because there is really only one passing place at Tarzan and if you are fast enough around the back of the circuit the bigger cars cannot get close enough to mount a challenge.

Instead I went for the 3l Eagle which is down on power compared to many of the other 3l cars, but is nicely balanced and forgiving. I needed a tow in qually to get close to the front of the grid, but the track was always empty as I hit the straight and I ended up back in 8th spot.
Almost bogged down at the start and had to dip the clutch to recover the revs, but still held my place into Tarzan because those behind were making a cautious start.
Sam was ahead and had hooked up the Mclaren really well. He was on the tail of Marco's Brabham, but was struggling for power down the straight and did not seem able to go for the pass. So, I used the double tow and stuck my Eagle down the inside at Tarzan and picked off Sam. Then I followed Marco who seemed to be struggling with his handling and a lap later I pulled the same move and squeezed past Marco.
Sam passed Marco and was now posing a real threat as he sat on my tail looking for an opening. AndyL was holding a watching brief a safe distance back and I could see the potential for losing several places  if it went wrong.
For the next 5-6 laps it was great fun as Sam and I traded tenths on each lap. This looked like being a race long battle for what was now 3rd place.....then suddenly Sam vanished from my mirrors and I thought he had made a mistake............a few seconds later there was a total eclipse of the sun and it all went black.........a disappointing end to what might have been a really fun race.

I hope that you can post the replay cap, Axel.  I'd love to see all the goings on that lead me from 14th on the grid to P8 in 10 laps despite being run over and savaged by a BT19 at Tarzan.  Rarely have I seen such carnage.

Edit: NP, Axel.  I just found it on the UKGPL index page and downloaded.  Now to watch the fun!  :)

...I imported the race as non championship race...

So no incident reports, or penalties, for Piero punting you lap 3 leading to complete track blockage, ending your race, and me going from 4th to 12th, or Marco's stupid selfish reckless rejoin lap 4 that ended my race completely?

Awesome. Gonna go add "Mercaldo'd" to the Urban Dictionary.

I guess that Martin's comment about Zandvoort is intended to highlight the myriad possibilities for a mas disco. If it is a hardware issue I don't think we can complain, as all of our servers are provided free by  our generous members.

I am not the person to ask about these tekky issues and some of you are far more aware than I am about the interwebnet etc. Am I to understand that we have no means of monitoring what causes these mass disconnects?
I can appreciate that a single disco could be at the client end of the connection, but when we have a whole race shut down on a track that is known to be solid, are there not some clues about what went wrong and where?

That was fun while it lasted. :) Tristan was driving the heck out of his car. I was enjoying watching it. He made me want to try the 2L Brabham on this track soon. I enjoyed it the one time I've driven it.

Tristan opened a gap quickly. It made me wonder if the 2L engine requires much less fuel. He got in the grass a little at one point and let me close that early gap. After a few laps and my tires were warm, I could keep pace with him. I'd lose a little time throughout the lap except when he slid wide, but I'd make most of it up on the straight. I was careful not to try too much since I don't have much experience with these cars yet. I was glad to keep up but there wasn't any reasonable way I could get closer for the first several laps.

Tristan who looked like he would take the BT11 / BRM home in first place.

Don't be so sure Billy. I didn't think I was having to drive as hard as Tristan. I wasn't sliding much like he was. I was getting closer just as the race ended. I was getting smoother too. And I'm not going to be easy to beat when I'm driving this consistently.

Lap 6: 1m27.206s
Lap 7: 1m27.228s
Lap 8: 1m27.019s
Lap 9: 1m27.009s
Lap 10: 1m26.896s

I was looking forward to the rest of the race. I was content to trail for the next third of the race, hoping to improve my driving, and then turn up the pressure for the last third.

I'm growing fond of this mod. It may be my second favorite F1 mod now. I think as I drive it more I'll grow to like it more than the 69X mod. That's unusual since I seem to prefer the higher powered cars most. The 67s will probably always be my overall favorites. I must be a prototype driver by nature though, because the GTs and 71 Can Ams remain my favorite mods.

Congrats to Tristan! That's was a good drive and I was very pleased to be able to stay close. I look forward to some more races in these cars.

I don't know much if any more than Clive. That's two in a row for me. I wonder if I could play a part in some problems. As we're spread further around the planet, it's seems connection problems would be more likely. At Brands I thought if latencies cause a problem, I should probably be one of the first dropped since I'm the furthest in distance from the server. I also wonder if I get a screen freeze from my computer could it cause others to be discoed when I am? My computer is prone to screen freezes at Bsarthe offline.

I usually have a latency of .180-.200. I rarely have trouble at that latency. I can drive close to other cars most of the time. I'm more careful with Doni and Dean since our signals traverse the Atlantic. I seem them warping occasionally so they must see me warping some too.

Looking for patterns is the only thing I know to do concerning software problems. Tris disappeared just before Panoramabocht. I turned the meters on as I got on the straight. My Q meter was very high. The other two didn't appear out of the ordinary. I drove almost to Tarzanbocht before I got the reconnect screen. I think others mentioned a different meter being unusual.

Thanks for the laugh Dean. My commiserations. Be careful Marco. We already have enough words, Dean doesn't need to be adding to the language.

And thanks to all of you. I hope we can keep getting more fun from this sim.

This mass disco had nothing to do with hard- or software problems of the server, it worked fine without any issues.
I do monitor it with open Hardware Monitor where I get a graph for the event with temps, clocks and load.

I even have checked my router for any issues, but there were no interrupts or issues at the time.

???? it says that I "resurrected" and did not disconnect at all. ??

Well, when all other cars vanish and a few seconds later the screen goes black and you crash to desktop, I would consider that a disco?

From your server report it looks like the server thought we were all still there? which is puzzling. :-\

I didn't say you were the cause of the either incident, but that YOU were the cause of MY involvement. The incident that caught you was cleared up, it was YOU deciding to drive straight onto the race line (against politeness, sportsmanship, and league rules) that ended MY race (after your brother ended Cookie's [and almost mine]).
