Season 30 Works Trophy – Round 7 –  Solitude

Round 7 will be the longest track for Season 30. Near Stuttgart the Solitude race track was used predominantly for motorcycle racing. Not as daunting as the Nuerburgring, but will be a challenge. Remember this is a left handed circuit.

HANDICAPPING
The tokens system remains for all drivers.
In the interest of having a competitive championship the faster drivers are requested to voluntarily select car that suits your ability. If you are consistently qualifying at the front of the grid,  finishing on the podium & recording fastest lap then you should be not be taking a faster car.
The championship will be reviewed after Race 3. Drivers may then be allocated to one of the following handicap groups
Group 1 BRM, Honda, or Cooper,
Group 2 as above + Brabham
Group 3 as above + Ferrari
The championship is still very open so no handicap will apply for this race.

Until the number of registered drivers exceeds grid capacity drivers may join the server as soon as it appears in IGOR.

Drivers are required to complete 50% distance to score points.

There is no Red Zone for this series, moderating will be on reported incidents only. Please remember that an additional 1 place penalty is awarded for Lap 1 incidents.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

Screenfreeze lap 3. >:(

Many congrats to Rob for a fine win! Turned out to be the only finisher after my internet conked out for a couple of minutes  :(.

It turned out to be a race of attrition. Greg was very unfortunate on the first corner, getting tangled with Jethro. The whole field got caught up in the incident, except Rob, who scampered off into the distance. Fortunately for me at least, I still had four wheels attached (and not upside-down  ;)) and resumed in 4th place, behind Clive and Andreas.

While I had the faster pace, I couldn't pass Andreas where it counted, but he very gentlemanly let me through on the start/finish straight after a couple of laps. Spend the next half of the race trying to catch Clive, but he fell victim to the grassy banks and lost a wheel, allowing me up into 2nd.

With no hope of catching Rob I settling for getting to the finish. We were the only two runners for the last few laps. On the last lap, I got a bit excited as I saw I was catching on Rob very suddenly, only to realise it was my internet playing games with me. Disconnected on the last lap which was disappointing, even if it didn't affect the race result. Hope to get closer to you next time Rob  ;).

I had decent practice session. I had to look at past events to see the last time I drove a 67 here, May 2014. I know the track well but no time recently in the 67s had me cautious. It's a much different beast without wings or small displacement engines. I had few minor offs in practice but I was pleased the to keep the car clean. Although, I did crash in front of Clive. I was running out of gas so I made quit exit from his path.

I thought I might beat Rob with the car advantage. I had an ideal lap in the 28s without pushing much. I figured after a few more laps I'd get in the groove.

I guess I should have been in more of a hurry at the start of the race. I was trying to leave Rob room and make it through the first few turns without any drama. Jethro's plans were different.

Not much fun, I'd hoped to improve my lap time significantly during the race. With 14 laps, caution was going to be my main concern for at least 2 or 3 laps.

I've had some lousy races this weekend.

Historically T1 at Solitude has been the end of many dreams of glory, so I tried to approach the start very carefully. I was almost sucked into the gap that appeared down the inside, but resisted.  Suddenly there were 3 cars spinning or airborne and just enough space to stand on the brakes and avoid the carnage. I fully expected a shunt from behind as an unsighted driver entered the area at racing speed.
 A gap appeared directly in front of me and a pathway through wreckage. I carefully weaved the Waza through and was further amazed to emerge without contact and in 2nd spot. Robert was already a distant memory and out of sight as I rounded T2, and anyway I knew that I could not live with his pace in my heavy Honda.
Over the next few laps I concentrated on keeping things smooth and slowly eased away from the chasing pack, until a recovering Samb emerged in 3rd place. His qualifying pace showed that he would be a threat, so I tried to squeeze some extra pace to maintain the gap.

Although the setup was generally working well, I had been unable to get rid of random snap oversteer, especially over bumps. I did not happen every lap, or on every bump, but when it happened it was sudden and violent. I did at least 2 x 360 spins without hitting any trees which was quite a feat, but that lost precious seconds from my lead over Samb. When I was running clean laps I was only fractionally slower than Samb, so I figured that should be able to make life difficult if he caught me.
Then on the run back through the sweeping curves to the S/F line I caught one of those bumps and the car snapped left and right before launching itself at the scenery and ripping a wheel off!! I heard Samb cruise past before quitting, still cursing under my breath.

Grats to Rob on a dominant performance and consistant pace and getting to the finish.

Mixed feelings about this race. Ran a good race myself, and was happy with my drive in the BRM, but hoped for a good fight with the likes of Greg and Sam. I'm pretty sure Greg could have made it very hard for me in the F312. Eventually I was the only finisher, as Sam discoed on the last lap...

Grats, Robert, on a typically solid drive to victory.  And in the BRM P115, no less.  As ever, the consummate pro.  :)

Well done to Sam for P2 in the Eagle.  From my vantage point chasing, I noted a marked increase in pace as the laps reeled off in the race.  Good show.

A lucky P3 for me as everyone behind me at the time fell to grief.  I had trouble in Q in handling the braking for the end of the main straight but got a handle on things for the race.  Enjoyed battling Andreas til he fell off.  A careless maneuver through one of the sweeps got me out of phase for the following section where I spun and got stuck in a ditch.  No damage.  Just high-centred.  Shades of Senna in Brazil, 1994.  Them's the breaks!
