Post by: Phil Thornton on January 29, 2017, 11:54:08 PM +0000
Season 31 Historic Trophy – Round 1 - Zolder 67

The first race of this season will be at Zolder in Belgium.  In the days before Spa became a permanent fixture on the F1 calendar, ten grand prix were run at Zolder. Most famously in 1982 when Gilles Villneuve tragically lost his life during qualifying. The new Zolder 67 version is a great piece of track building by Ginetto.

This race is for cars with 2 Litre engines.

Driver lists and divisional rules can be found on the championship standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=591&theme=6)

Only reported incidents will be moderated, there is no Red Zone.

The traditional Historics handicapping system will be used for this season with the drivers leading the championship being limited to the slower chassis. As this is the first race all drivers have a free choice of chassis (even Tristan!).

Hi there, Phil!  :)

I understand that there is a 'free choice' of car for this first round but I have to ask if the selection nominated will be taken into account for future races?  Will it be OK to use the same car later in the season?

Hi Doni
Everyone gets a free choice for this race (it is a personal choice if the faster drivers opt for a slower car).  In subsequent races the drivers leading the championship will be restricted to the slower cars. There are no specific restrictions which limit how many times you can use a particular car.  The rules are on the the championship standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=591&theme=6).

D'oh!

Fell victim to the sandbank on the first corner about 3/4 race distance. Pity that as I was having a brilliant battle with Axel & Greg for most of the race.

Not too sure what happened at the first corner. Felt like going back to the first day of school  :).

Good luck to those still running.

Not a good omen for new season: engine went with 8 laps left, robbed me of a very comfortable P3, which might have become a win.  >:(

Grats Tris and podium.

Hmm, well nice to get some track time albeit from a lap behind almost everyone.  Eventually found a bit of rhythm in the last 5 laps but was a long way behind anyone.  Hope I didn't get in anyone's way.

@clive sorry I think I got in your way during qualifying.

Doh x 2

I meant to upshift, but instead I downshifted. Then the engine lost power. So I thought that I damaged the engine. I did not realize that I had actually ran out of fuel. I could have refueled!

@ Billy, sorry if I had a bad rejoin on lap 18. I turned around on track. I need to practice making donuts before the next race.

Good race,
Walter

Nice to see a full grid for the opening race of the season.

Server replay now available via the link in the first post of this thread.

I need to moderate this race before the next round because the handicapping is based on championship position.  So please submit your incident reports in the next couple of days so I have a chance of moderating the race on time.

An amazing race, Zolder 67 is just perfect for the 66 2lts and 65s. :thumbup2:

Probably should have joined with the white Lotus-BRM, but once I made a setup with the Climax, that was that. Plus, the grid was full 8)

Learned the combo in Q and after a mid-grid spot on low fuel (getting unnerved by this fast new pole guy on my tail in the last corner , and having a nice battle with Tris coming out of the pits!), I almost beat that again on race fuel. Knew at that point a consistent race could give a good finish.

Got a good start and gained some places on the right hand side, but then the inevitable happened and T1 started getting crowded.. almost made it through unscathed, but after a quick 360 got going again a few rows up. Philippe and Andy let me by nicely, and thus began a race long duel with Doni, who was as cool as a cucumber, despite my multiple passing attempts. Finally, after 10 laps of dicing I made it past, but before I could go too far there was overheating - of the PICNIC (problem in chair, not in computer/car) variety! :sweatdrop: :scared:

Half-spun in T2, then Max V'd off the last corner exit kerb, and had it all to do again. Greg and Sam spun as we were making a Trulli train behind Axel (who had spun earlier, seeing me sliding all over the exit kerbs). Then we came back to Doni, whose eyes were getting fatigued (and I understood why, as the race felt very long after that solid 10 lap dice!). Axel passed straight away, but I wasn't as bold, not wanting to collide after such a great race, and once I got by, braked too late into the last chicane and Doni did a brilliant repass into T1 :fencing:.

Finally, I got past for a 3rd time :surrender:! As Greg caught back up, and chased after Axel, but it was too late. Considering an unlucky retirement for Dean, Lalethor and Tris running low on fuel, perhaps 3rd/4th could have turned into 2nd.. but I haven't had that much fun in a long time. ;D

Impressive new records Lalethor - I said to Tris is this Tom Guerout in disguise :alien:! :D

Phil's server worked fine with such a full grid, grats!

Great racing with a surprising end.

I was almost sure there will be incidents at the start with such a full grid so I made a very cautious start from the bottom of the grid ...but it was not enough and I couldn't even pass the first turn : another car was crossing the track at 90° from right to left (the driver probably forget what brakes are supposed to do !)  and I lost a wheel  :(

Very disappointed. Next race I will start 10 seconds after the last car to have a chance to perform at least 50% (always my first objective).

What a disaster for me!!  :-\

Grats to Tris and the podium...and a big welcome to Allesandro??!! certainly someone to be watched??

Qualification was OK for me and I got myself up to 3rd spot on the grid. Allesandro bogged down at the start and I just avoided rear ending him to leap into 2nd place behind Tris.

From there it all went horribly wrong, although it took me several laps to work out why the car was just not driving as I expected.  I had left the race setup as "default"  ::) Eventually one of the offs caused some serious damage so I walked back to the pits :(

Useless to do the poles if you want to start in second gear    ;D
Beautiful race of Trinstan, for me the only thing was to follow him, no possible to pass without a mistake, mistake that he made at T2 so I can go to victory..  but my mistake almost the end it was more severe
After the bump I touched the grass in inside and I'm stucked into the nets, press esc was only thing

Congratulations for you great start within the UKGPL races !!
You could soon become the best Tristan Bot's nightmare   ;D

Could you please have a look at the personal message I sent you (see at the top the blue bar and click on "my messages') ?
You should make some changes with your mod65 registration before today 21:59 (Italian time) or 20:59 (UK time)   if you want to run at Stardust !!!
thanks

Apologies for the late filing.  I've been pre-occupied with medical issues.

A lucky P5 for me.  Could have been far worse.  I profited from the Lap01, T1 shunt to gain many placings.

Fine drive by Tris!  Grats!  But please...  Let's see an end to the goofy donuts on track.  I really didn't need to have my FFB steering wheel ripped out of my hands when I drilled you.  Maybe a NASCAR sim is more to your taste?  ;)

Cookie a fine P2 after early dramas and Iestyn, too, scoring a podium after some offs.  Great stuff, fellas.  Not to be forgotten is Greg's drive.  Up from Nowheresville after the T1, Lap01 business to place P4.  Admirable drive.

Iestyn is correct in mentioning some vision issues but that was not a prime factor for me.  Only when Greg appeared in my mirrors in the later laps did the eyes start to fog a bit.  More than anything, I was suffering from fatigue and as Iestyn has mentioned above, the race seemed to take a long, long time.  I was ready for it to be flagged with 10 laps to go!  LOL!

Izzy and I had a supremely entertaining duel.  His Lotus with Climax V-8 power is something of a stone in the engine department so that helped even out things with my superior BRM P261.  I really enjoyed holding him off with no Formula 3-style carve-ups.  There was some real side-by-side action with each looking out for the other guy.  That was keen!  TYVM, Iestyn!  :)

Moderation published.
Although there were no reported incidents there were a couple of spins at the start which resulted in at least one driver being knocked out of the race through no fault of his own.  The start of a race is a great opportunity to make up some places but it is also very easy to bump into other cars because the probability of a car being in a driver's blind spot is so much greater.  Please don't take unnecessary risks and try to keep to your own side of the track until you are sure it is safe to move across onto the racing line.
