SEASON 31 Professionals Trophy (65) : Round 1  STARDUST

Long time gone track, Stardust was built in 1965 by the Stardust Hotel and Casino.
It hosted the season finale of the Can-Am Championship between 1966 and 1968.
In 1969 the Stardust hotel was sold and the new owners largely abandoned the track; leased for a while then the whole land was sold. In 1970 track was closed and Spring Valley community took its place.

Check the Season 31 details (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=587&theme=6) regarding rules and the Pros (65) Trophy pages (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=590&theme=6) in particular.

Comfortably leading in the T77; never won a league race in it (but a championship) but got a screenfreeze with less than 13 laps to go...  :-\

The Coop was a joy to drive at this track which has a nice flow despite the evil polo's. Good luck to those still running ;)

Argh, really sorry for punting you out of the race Axel, I hoped you'd rejoin and waited for a few seconds, but the damage seemed disproportionate.

I enjoyed the racing, was going well but the lure of Clive within spitting distance was too much and I pushed a bit too hard on the last lap and went off letting Tris and Roo through.  Good racing chaps.  Quite pleased with 4th (before mod  :o), but I guess the Honda is a decent set o wheels, defo better than the Cooper!!

Cheers,

Bob

Sorry to Phillippe for the punt in the rhythm section lap 1, you slowed dramatically when there was a big gap for you to go through, caught me unexpected. I'll report when able to.  :(

Thought I was good on gas, but realized with two to go that I wouldn't make the chequers. Hoped I had enough of a gap back to Andy to slip into and out of the pits but I'd been taking it easy for 3-4 laps previous futilely trying to squeeze it out to the end, and that cost me the position. Bah.

made too many mistakes, but got away with them & then lucked into a podium.
cars were disappearing quite a lot mid race, then it seemed to settle down (probably after Robert had disco'd?).
happy to have made the finish on a tricky track.

thanks to admins & host.

edit:
replay link not working for me :(

Quite a surprise, and extremely lucky, to benefit from the misfortune of others and take this win.

I had done zero practice ( which is normal these days ) and no prepared setup for this race. In fact it was not until I had to join the server that I even thought about car choice. My favourite 65 is the BT11, the BT7 is fun where the straights are not too long, but I thought a good challenge here would be the old Wazamobile.

For setup I grabbed an old one from Mosport, hoping that I remembered correctly and that it was stable. qually was OK but I was running on full race fuel and still trying to find the right lines when it ended.
Robert's time on pole in the Cooper was absolutely stunning and I figured that we were all racing for 2nd place!! He had a whole second in hand over us lesser mortals.
When the race started I got away reasonably well and tried to hang on to the leaders. I pushed too hard in the early laps and ran wide a couple of times, losing places, until I got my head together and settled down to some serious driving.
One or two mistakes ahead allowed me to regain places and I got myself back into 3rd place with Tris quite a long way ahead.
Slowly, slowly I chipped away at that gap until finally I was on his tail with about 15 laps to go. Robert, at that point was so far ahead that he was racing on another circuit!! but I was beginning to feel that there was a chance of 2nd if I could find a way around Tris. That all went wrong at T2 where I was too close to Tris, when he had a wobble, and had to take avoiding action  that dropped me a long way back.
It was not exacvtly a red mist, but there was a rosy glow in that air as I focused on chasing Tris again hoping that he would make a mistake and give me another shot at catching him. By now I had sorted out the quicker lines and concentrated on braking points and apexes.
I'm not sure if he did make an error but I was definitely closing quickly enough to make the end of the race very interesting.
Then I noticed that Robert had disappeared from the leader board....this was for the top step of the podium now!!!

As I got within 100mtrs of Tris, I could see some cars ahead that he would have to lap. With about 5 laps to go this could be my chance to get right on his tail. There was a coming together as Tris as the 2 cars turned onto the back straight and I came upon two spinning cars. I aimed for the empty side of the track, but could see that one of the cars coming my way and held my breath as I squeezed through................. into 1st place.
By the time I crossed the S/F line I could see that I had a comfortable lead over Bob, also in a Honda, who had also passed the stricken Tris. With 4+ laps to go I felt that I could play safe and back off.......Bob had other ideas and started to close alarmingly quickly. I still felt that I had enough of a cushion to finish ahead of him and did not panic, at least not until I needed to!
I was watching the gap as the laps ticked off and just as I was thinking that I had better push a little, I saw Bob run wide at T2, and smiled to myself. Sorry Bob, but I did  ;)
A cruise to the flag was all I had to do.
Commiserations to Robert and Tris, whose races were ended prematurely. Iestyn might have had some influence on the result had he been there, but I'll happily take the champagne this time  ;D.

So I trust you've got a new decent wheel m8? That would be great! Especially since it seems I've improved a little more :P

Congratulations, Clive!  Fine win.

Hard luck for our Cooper drivers...  Tris with a collision and Robert with a freeze while enjoying a substantial lead.  Ghastly, RF.  Cookie out early, too.  :(

After my abdominal arterial surgery Monday morning, I just wanted to take the start and cruise.  I considered doing just half distance to score some points and then park the car but things were going OK so I continued to the finish.  I got the feeling that Ray was running far under his potential as I was able to hang with him at the back of the field.  I put on just a bit of a spurt in the late laps to make the pass.  Sorry to see that soon after, he had a collision with Tris and was KO'd.

The last 12 months has seen me go through enough procedures to last for quite some time, thank you.  Skin cancer surgery*, persistent eye problems(I may be getting a handle on this with some supercharged eye drops c/w a steroid component), thyroid surgery to remove a(thankfully)non-cancerous growth and now a ream-job on an artery which restricted blood flow to my left leg to something like only 40%.

* Skin cancer?  Almost certainly rooted in seven consecutive days at Mosport in 1970 in the runnup to the CanAm race as a buddy and I went to the track hopes of seeing some pre-race trials of the AVS Shadow.  It finally showed on Friday and what a sensation!  Monday following the race, I had to get medical attention for sunburn.  Fried to a fare thee well...

Hope all your health problems get sorted, Doni!  ;) I guess old(er) age has its infirmities.  :wheelchair:  :-*

Now that I'm in my midlife (crisis) I also get less eyesight, and starting to perform less physically on most area's. Only with GPL I perform better the older I get  ???  8) ;D

PS: merci to the mods for organizing, and thanks to Axel for server!

It does not matter dany. It was my fault, I braked too hard.  ;) :P
No problem, and thank you for your message.

Very difficult for me to follow the rhythm printed by tristan, robert and the others. The pros, do not laugh. This is serious !  ::) ::)

So I think without problems, be able to keep the lotus until the end of the season, lol  ;D ;D ;D
I will not dangerous for the ranking  >:( >:(

Congratulations to the winner and the podium

Not yet.. perhaps I would need a better car. Even then it's probably not enough, I've noticed that as well :). (GregT is also starting to look like Fangio in the W196 to my Moss..)

Doni - With all that going on and yet still able to race so hard all race long at Zolder. Kahunas amigo 8)!

When I get twice the penalty (two places lost vs. one*, and 2 penalty points vs. 1) for our respective transgressions, the system is broken.

*yes, that's due to the "50% distance to score points" thing, but if supposedly fair rule + supposedly fair rule = unfair result, it's not "fair + fair = 2x as fair", it's UNfair.

Dean

The penalty system is built into SRou and applies to all Sims (GTR, GTL etc) hosted on SRou.  There is an explanation of how it applies to UKGPL is under the Yellow card paragraph on this (https://www.ukgpl.com/index.php/rules/penalties) page and a worked example is here (https://www.ukgpl.com/index.php/rules/yellow_card_example).

Just to be clear, the Yellow Card system automated and is built into SRou, the UKGPL moderators don't have a choice in how it is applied.  We just declare an incident as worthy of a caution, warning or penalty and the system does the rest.

As for the incidents themselves, I don't want to comment or compare the incidents, as all incidents are judged separately and on their own merits. So if we accept that both incidents have attracted the same penalty, i.e. 2 places then there is nothing wrong with the results table, it is just the way the algorithm works.

Ronnie should have been dropped 2 places but because he was the next to last classified finisher he can only drop 1 place.  If the calculation of 2 places is done on the finishers before the < 50%  finishers are discounted, all that would do is demote Ronnie twice and then promote him once when the < 50% finishers were removed.  The net result is the same.

The only way to avoid this specific issue is to drop the 50% rule.  Even then, being last or second to last of all finishers means a 2 place penalty either has no effect or a reduced (i.e. 1 place) effect.

Trying to complicate the algorithm to award Ronnie 13 points for 12th place but show him as 11th in the table would be too cumbersome in my view. I'm not sure I could persuade Dave Gymer (SRou web master and site owner) that this "feature" is sufficient to warrant a rewrite of the algorithm.

I hope this rather long winded reply goes some way to explain that we, the moderating team, are simply trying to apply the rules as fairly and as consistently as possible.  After all the rules are the same for everybody, next time it might be you that benefits from this "feature".  So overall I for one am satisfied that the rules are perfectly fair.

*** Update ***.  Dean, I've re-read your post and noticed I missed something. I've updated the mod report to correctly classify the incident at 0h42m01s as a penalty.  The system has now applied the right number of Yellow Card points for a penalty (i.e. 2).  Now Ronnie has 3 Yellow Card points in the championship table but the race result and allocated points remains the same. The system is fair if we use it properly!

About your other question : how to file an appeal about moderation ?

I just saw that in the rules :

Process Driver Appeals  : A driver is entitled to appeal to the Chief Moderator if they disagree with a Divisional Moderator's ruling.
