Post by: Samb on February 06, 2017, 09:16:22 PM +0000
Season 31 Privateers Trophy - Round 01 - Kyalami

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1967 season, the UKGPL season will take place on 10 of the 11 original circuits. For the first round of the season we go to a familiar track. Kyalami Racing Circuit (from Kyalami, My home in Zulu) is a motor racing circuit located in Midrand, Gauteng province, South Africa. The circuit has been used for Grand Prix and Formula One races and has hosted the South African Grand Prix many times. Among the Formula One races held at the track the 1977 South African Grand Prix stands out, as it is principally remembered for the fatal accident that claimed the lives of race marshal Frederick Jansen van Vuuren and driver Tom Pryce. In recent years, the area surrounding the circuit has developed into a residential and commercial suburb of Johannesburg.

IMPORTANT: it is policy of UKGPL to have the original pitstraight armco installed at this original track! Failure to apply the pitwall & drive in that space may result in disqualification. Follow these instructions to restore the wall if you have a mod that has removed it:
METHOD 1: To place a wall between the pits and the track, rename or remove the kyalami.trk and kyalami.3do files from your kyalami folder.
METHOD 2: To reinstall the original Papyrus Armco, rename or remove the Armco_s.mip file from your kyalami folder.

Note the Privateers division is run on Intermediate damage settings. Drivers are permitted 1 Shift R followed by a Stop & Go in the pit lane within 2 laps. Failure to make a stop will result in a DQ. If you require a stop & go on the final lap & are unable to complete a time penalty of 15 secs is added.

This Season we don't have a Red Zone. Moderating will be on reported incidents only. If you haven't received a PM about an incident before the link below the results table is removed, you can be sure that you will not appear in the moderator's report.

The chassis token system is explained on the Privateers standings page. Please ensure you choose a chassis that is within your budget, which can be seen by hovering the mouse over your points total in the standings.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

Nice to see that 19 people are registered for the privateers. Would it be ok if I become a full time driver so that I can join qualifying round sooner?

My sincere apologies to the person I rear-ended. I barely touched you, but your car flipped and burst into flames.  :(

Couldn't make it, we're in the process of moving house and time just wasn't on my side.  Don't think I'd have been much of a threat as I was doing 1:22s on a good lap in the Honda so probably a good thing.  Hope everyone had a good race.

Hopefully get everything set up for the next one but we'll see how it goes.

I too must apologize for spinning in front of several cars. I was having a good drive amongst the back markers. However, I started making mistakes very consistently. My race became a battle to stay on track. I began to ask myself, why did I pick the very nice Lotus car to use as a lawnmower! Then I tell myself to concentrate more, and I was off track again. It was all in good fun, and I enjoyed matching pace with Phil and Michael. I hope to do better at our next race; should not be hard to do!

Congrats Gareth, David R. and Bastian!  Good race.

Replay downloads ok for me [unfortunately, I need to look at it...]

So anyway, ignoring the 1st lap for now - all the action took place/was over within a couple of laps [and yes, looked as if you were struggling in those initial laps Walter],  then was a case of falling further away from the guys ahead whilst the chaps behind also did the same.

Would appear to be a lot of time that can either be made up, or lost at T1...

Nice to be back, but yes - looks as if practice will be required.

Also seems to be a bunch of bonus tokens that will also come back to bite some areas, what with the the BRM & Cooper turnout...

Cheers,
Dave.

Dave, that pit lane armco squeezes any progress attempted by the fast grid starter on the right. Well, we could all continue without any resets and I had some fun with Billy after a while. Unfortunately he picked the wrong side when lapping Phil. In the end, with the exception of Axel, the finishing positions closely resemble the starting positions. Quite civilised.
Grats Gareth.

Well done to the guys at the front - very quick & consistent. My achievement was not getting lapped. As mentioned above the action was in the first few laps. I got a better start than Andy L & proceeded to hold him up for a few laps. It was for position & hopefully all fair. Thanks to Ronnie for making room near the end - hope I didn't spoil your battle with Michael.

Thanks Billy - no it didn't make any difference.  Not sure how many laps Michael and I battled, but I couldn't get past him!  Was fun, though. :)

Always a worry for me racing with another league for the 1st time... (Don't take the field out at T1 etc).

Qualified in 6th behind Fulvio in the other Cooper. The flag dropped and I think he bogged down at the start and I was up into 5th by T1. Through safely then on the exit to T2 touched the grass with the left rear and slid across the track brushing the fence on the other side. Swearing profusely to myself rejoined down the field but still ahead of the guys caught out in the incident at the start so set off after the pack. Caught Billy around Lap 3 and stalked him for a few laps looking for a way through and finally got my wish on Lap 5 and dived up the inside at T1. Caught the Fulvio, Bagrupp and Rainier train on about Lap 11 but there was nothing I could do so sat watching the lines and trying to come up with a solution. Bagrupp had a moment around Lap 19 and we were through. Rainier slowly extended his advantage and I sat glued to Fulvio's gearbox for a few laps with Bagrupp doing likewise behind. Had noticed Fulvio took a wide entry into the Leeukop Bend to get a straighter run onto the SF straight. I knew if I could hold a tighter line and get the power down early enough and get inside him for The Kink I could make a pass stick which was exactly what happened at the end of lap 22, Bagrupp was through as well and making a real nuisance of himself. He was obviously faster than me but I somehow held him off for a few laps before having to let him have the inside into Crowthorne. He slowly extended over the the next few laps and Fulvio was making enquiries about my 4th place at every opportunity. Then on Lap 33 I was back with Bagrupp again who must have had another moment so the 3 of us were all smelling the podium champagne but Bagrupp kept his nerve and I managed to hold off Fulvio to grab 4th place.

Really pleased with the result, enjoyed the close racing possible on a track most I'm sure know well.

Thanks to all those who were lapped, So polite, I was taken by surprise. I hope I can return the favour as efficiently when I have the inevitable off day in a few races.

Thanks for letting me join this series guys, it was a blast. Not sure how many I will make but I'll get to as many as I can.

TTFN
John.

It was 25 laps by my count. I don't think I've ever had to concentrate so hard in a race. And not only because of Ronnie on my gearbox but also because ot the number of lappers.
There are quite a few Works standard drivers in this division making life interesting for us backmarkers. I can see Monaco being quite a challenge for the front runners in that respect. Patience will be the key.

Mod report published.

Thanks chaps.

I admit I had to go back & watch the replay again after reading the comments - I don't think I've noticed before that 1 lane disappears before!
[I'll have to bear that in mind if I ever make another relatively good start].

Anyway, apologies for the tangle/aftermath.  Although did make for a few exciting laps for me before running through to the end.

Cheers,
Dave.
