Title: UKGPL Season 31 (2017) Specials Series Trophy - Kyalami 67R - Feb 14
Post by: EvilClive on February 08, 2017, 12:40:18 PM +0000
This is the first of this season's SPECIAL series. We are celebrating 50 yrs since the original 1967 GP season with something a little different.

All of the tracks are the original Papyrus circuits that were published on the original CD, but we are running them in reverse direction. There will be a mixture of carsets to use through the season and for the first race we are using the 69x cars.
Please refer to the championship page to see which cars you are eligible to use. The general focus is on fun and close racing for all, with the faster drivers limited to the slower cars.
Kyalami in reverse presents well known corners from a different perspective and what was once a flat out corner might now need to be treated with more respect. also some corners that were slow might now be taken a little more quickly....you will have to experiment. But, everyone should "know" the layout of the track.

In the 69x, PRO drivers cannot use: Matra MS80, Matra MS10, Brabham BT26a, Lotus 49b or McLaren M7. They are permitted to use any other chassis once only during the season.

Hahaha  ;D

IMO EvilC has to post the racethreads in reverse as well, or he has to race the reversed tracks in reverse backwards!

Just like these guys at Troovdnaz https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7ipFApsFec (especially after 6m45s)

I get a plain dark green track tarmac, using the OGLV2 rasterizer.

Just put these 4 asphalt files (https://www.sendspace.com/file/64jscd) into the imalayk track folder to get it grey  :)

I live in Truro now, work in Padstow, but born in Falmouth. I have lived in Bristol and Brighton, but Cornwall is where the heart is.
Been to tavy a few times, years ago, I remember I liked it.
Thank you Dave, Cornwall is a nice place to live.

Lol, what a small world.

My wife and I spend 2 weeks each autumn close to Padstow, out at Trevose, near the lighthouse, and, because it is my wife's favourite place, we take the occasional weekend break at the Metropole in downtown Padstow!
We have debated many times about moving down there, but...................well  ???

I bet we have seen each other at some point  :o

At the moment I can't join the server. Igor keeps telling me that I don't have the track installed... Which I have! I've just did a test lap to be sure everything is okay.

Any idea?

Good luck Doni!

Not my track in either direction, in combination with a lumbago not a bad result...

Hard luck there Doni. That pit-lane barrier is a harsh trap that's for sure. I nearly hit it myself dawdling towards the middle of the straight on one lap  :o.

After Doni's unfortunate demise it was a simple case of bringing it home. Didn't have an answer for Tim & Gareth's pace up front so settled for 3rd. Though to make things interesting I had to have a spin towards the end, nearly taking out Andy  ::).

I rather enjoyed Kyalami in reverse format. Congrats to all finishers.

That was interesting. I'm not used to the 69's.
Fantastic pace up at the front. I lost count of my spins when they approached double figures. I don't think they hurt anyone else. I did turn over once and had a slide on my roof as some lappers were approaching. I hope I slid out of the way. That was my only SnG. Perhaps it's a GnS in this series.

I was really enjoying Imalayk. It has a really nice flow in reverse - I even found myself reducing front downforce for this direction Vs my race setup for going forwards!
In fact looking at my lap times from here and back in season 28 (when I drove a P126 forwards) the track is actually faster in reverse  8)
(My setup was just the one from S28 with the cambers reversed and 1 click less front wing)

Gareth made me work like anything with his pace in qually - once I dropped my race fuel and went into qualifying mode I couldn't find anyone to draft so didn't get the chance to pip him to pole.
To make it worse I only joined the grid at the last second again as I'm too used to the 2 minute wait at the start of AC races....

I then managed to fluff the start slightly (no idea how I didn't get a 'pit in' penalty, as the car started rolling just before the flag dropped) - maybe the steward took pity on my bogging down too much and getting jumped by Axel.

Axel was then kind enough to spin and return 2nd spot to me, which allowed me to press on hard on cold tires to re-close the gap to Gareth. One advantage of a high downforce setup in these cars is that driving on cold tires is much easier than it is for people on less wing.
Gareth wasn't quite able to put his power down in the first few laps which let me get right on his tail entering the main straight - luckily the draft allowed me to sneak up into the breaking zone and dive down the inside. I need to watch the replay to see what Gareth did as I was surprised he didn't hang on outside for longer and make me work for it.

After that about half the race race was spent trying to maximise corner speed to eek out a gap before the mighty DFV monstered back up behind me on the S/F straight - this alternated with getting pestered, nibbled and pawed by the dog who chose tonight to be bored and cuddly and didn't like my ignoring her  ::)

Gareth finally fell off and let me sneak away enough to get out of drafting range with 10 or 15 to go - I foolishly eased off a little at first thinking that should slow him a bit but if anything he obviously saw red as he immediately started to eat away at my lead.
Through ringing the neck of my BRM I managed to get home just under 4 seconds ahead - after his spin Gareth had been 7 or 8 back which makes me question whether I could have held onto my lead if he had remained behind throughout!

Brilliant race all, congrats to Gareth and Sam on the podium spots and to all other finishers, thanks to the back-markers for driving conscientiously, and commiserations to the retirees.

I'm not good at setting up a 69x car. i'm not good at setting them up at all but here it's the worst for me.

Then, the race started so quickly i couldn't calculate my fuel and joined on last second. I saw i would make half distance when using my shift r on low fuel to score some points.
In the end, at least this worked out. I was also having trouble with this damn pit armco while being lapped from axel who spun because of my harsh manoveur avoiding that armco...sorry but at least you didn' loose a position i guess.

Grats to the podium and all finishers in this first race of the series.

Good to hear some positive feedback on the reversed circuit idea and I hope that we can have equally large grids for the rest of the races.  I can agree that Kyalami feels faster in reverse ( although not as fast as the leaders!)  and it was about 10 laps into the race that I reckon I discovered what might be the reason. There are several uphill braking zones/corners in the reverse direction and I found that I could carry far more speed into those corners than I could in the conventional direction.

Although we are allowed resets in this series. When they are allowed, I self impose a single re set rule, so when I made a second mistake and a complete Horlicks of one corner that was so bad, I was still fighting a raging bull when I arrived at the next corner and stuffed it into the amco. 3 wheels doesn't work too well on a 69 BRM so I left the wreckage where it was.

TBH I did do a few laps when we were testing this reversed tracks idea, but I felt it would be unfair to practice too much and maybe gain an unfair advantage.( that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!) Also, my simracing these days is for fun, so I usually turn up for a race and rely on my years of experience and library of setups to get up to speed during qually sessions.

I will come unstuck when we hit the 66 Can Ams, because I have almost zero experience of these beasts, but I am looking forward to the challenge.

Well, it was interesting. The track felt faster backwards :D Too bad I'm not really good in the 69 cars... Once I reached 50% race distance I decided to pit in and retire the car.

Congrats to the winner! Thanks all for the race.
