Title: UKGPL Season 31 (2017) Specials Series Trophy - Monaco (29-71)R - Feb 28
Post by: EvilClive on February 23, 2017, 12:07:53 PM +0000
On to the next round of this season's SPECIAL series.

All of the tracks are the original Papyrus circuits that were published on the original CD, but we are running them in reverse direction. There will be a mixture of carsets to use through the season and for the second race we are using the 67 F2 cars.
Please refer to the championship page to see which cars you are eligible to use. The general focus is on fun and close racing for all, with the faster drivers limited to the slower cars.
Monaco in reverse is a different circuit with uphill hairpins and St Devote at the bottom of a fast downhill section, be careful!

In the 67 F2, PRO drivers cannot use: Matra MS5 FVA, Matra MS7 FVA, Brabham BT23 FVA, Lotus 48 FVA or Lola T100 FVA.
They are permitted to use any other chassis a maximum of 2x during the season.

Hard luck Dean, it appears as though an invisible barrier at the Rascasse caused the shenanigans on the first lap. I joined the party and rolled the car. The reset and SnG put me down to 8th.

From there it was good fun coaxing the Lola along, Monaco's never the easiest to pass but thanks to the courtesy of others I could slip up the order. I must apologise the Dave Ranier for the punt at the Rascasse. I was caught out by the different braking point and had no where to go  :-[. Glad you could carry on with no position lost  :).

Tim kindly waited for me up ahead and we proceeded to have a good battle for the lead. Though I tried Tim had the edge where it counted on the corner exits. Eventually our battle ended when I succumbed to the invisible barrier at the Rascasse on the opposite side of the start  :cursing:. Managed to get home 2nd. An eventful evening to say the least!

Congrats to Tim & Clive for their podium positions.

That was a disaster - it's only on watching the replay that I figured out what happened. I had assumed someone had hit me/lag hit me at the start when I got fired into Sam and the P4 car.
Turns out it was an invisible wall  >:( That's what you get for trying to leave room on a re-purposed track I guess  :(

As I was blocking the track I made to move off as fast as I could, think I bumped someone's nose in the process but felt it was better to clear the circuit as every other option would simply continue the road block.

I found myself pulling away pretty quick after that but noticed Sam climbing back up into about 7th or 8th on Prib so decided to hold pace and wait to see if he cleared (Dean?) into 2nd.
Eventually he did, so once he had a gap behind him I put in a mega slow lap to let him catch me - at this point I was still assuming there was some sort of weird lag impact that had caused the T1 crash so wanted to get back to start positions and fight for the place fairly.

Sam almost made me regret this as he hung on and pushed me like crazy, his late braking into T1 was at times scary as he could gain so much ground over me there. I'd clouted the barriers a few times in the first half of the race but just think Sam's car could stop better despite this.

Congrats to Sam and Clive on the podiums and all other finishers, very honest apologies if I ruined anyone's race but I had no way of knowing there was a wall there  :(

Fun Race, I am sorry to Axel for the shunt on lap 18. I hope to learn from my mistake. Also, sorry for the drivers behind me because I stopped in the racing line to wait for Axel to get going. I'll do it a little differently next time.

Great track for the F2 cars. I started the race very calm and composed. I was unaffected by the incident in T1. In a way, the incident shuffled a few faster drivers to the back. Reversing the grid as well. My adrenaline was building steadily as I had faster cars behind me. The fun factor was very high, but then my composure cracked while braking for Mirabeau. I was too concerned with the cars behind me, and I rear ended the car in front. I did a S&G for the incident. Then later in the race, I lost a wheel. So I did a shift R and S&G for that.

Thanks Axel and Clive for these reverse races. Congrats to the finishers.

Sorry for blocking the track, dean. Car in front of me spun and i braked too hard. I believe there is an invisble obstacle inside rascasse.

I was going to say I was sorry to have missed this one but reading this I think I may have been better off not making it.  :-\
I think this is the worst one to run in reverse, I hope/think the rest will work out better.

I think most of us discovered the invisible concrete block on the inside of Rascasse at some point. Those of us who found it in practice were the lucky ones and were able to adjust our racing line  to avoid the problem during the race.

I'm sorry that running a track in reverse throws up these issues and especially sorry that T1, lap1 affected so many people's race.

Perhaps we can ask all of those who practice these reverse tracks offline to post warnings about any glitches they discover??

I was the car in 4th that got caught up in the T1 problems. I was cautious at T1 and stayed wide, but it did not save me from being harpooned by a car and getting stuffed into the barriers. I waited a few seconds realising that any attempt at a S/R would not work. When I did hit the reset, my car was launched about 50 mtrs into the air and I frightened the helicopter pilot who was filming up there...quite spectacular!! ::)
By the time the chaos had cleared and my car was back on track I was last, and about 20msecs behind the pack. :-\

My original plan had been to use the underpowered Ferrari on a track that rewarded handling over outright speed and save better cars for other tracks. To work, I needed to get away at the front of the field and avoid any holdups through incidents in the midfield. Well that plan worked for about 10 seconds!! ???

After my SnG there was not a car in sight at any point on the track and I was not hopeful of making up the ground, or even being able to pass cars if I caught them. But, what the heck! lets give it a go.

I have to say that I did enjoy the reverse direction around Monaco and it had a nice flow for me. Gradually I caught cars and through others errors and some wave throughs I climbed up through the list. There was no chance of catching Tim and Sam who were too fast and too far ahead, but David was tantalisingly around 300mtrs ahead.
With around 5 laps to go I caught David but he was not going to give up his 3rd place easily and he defended very well. The extra power of his FVA engine made it very difficult to find a passing opportunity with the wheezing Ferrari.
For several laps I was glued to his tail pipes hoping for a mistake, but although he got a little ragged in places there was no opportunity to get past.
Starting the last lap I was thinking that David was going to hold onto his podium place until, at Rascasse, he found the invisible wall and his car stopped dead. I clipped the rear of his car and for one awful moment I thought that I had wrecked my car too, but all was OK and I was able to crawl around the outside of David's stricken car and steal his 3rd place.

What David did not know, was that I was out of fuel and I could only crawl around that last lap finishing with 0.1 litres. He could easily have held 3rd spot if he had survived T1.   Hard luck David.

I think for future races it would be an good idea for everyone to trial running down the edges of the first mile or so. I never knew or even considered that the originals would have invisible walls to be honest, I don't want to be caught out again.

I've guess that papyrus never thought anyone would be stupid enough to race backwards :D

I did mention this Ocanom glitch as part of my response to trying these tracks offline, but that is buried in the Aznom test race where we all put our thoughts on these things at the time.

https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=14249.30

Still it didn't stop me being caught by it later in the race.
At the start, those of us towards the back of the grid stopped until a path became clear. Dave found a way through and I followed him. Off we went expecting the faster drivers to soon catch up. I was wobbly and slow and holding up Bastain at times, but I had a gap when I spun backwards into the haybales. I bounced out and away before he arrived, but it had a knock on effect. Sorry Dean.

Sam came through and then I hit the armco in Casino Square so that I was facing the wrong way. I couldn't get back round and up to speed before everyone but Doni had passed. Later I gained a couple of places when Walter and Axel came together.
Near the end after I let Sam lap me, he found the invisible wall and he had to lap me again. Sorry Sam I got that wrong.
I am happy that I survived without a reset, but it seems that these F2's can take a lot of punishment without losing wheels and blowing engines.

I think that this is about as hard as it gets. Monaco backwards in (for me) an unfamiliar car set. It was quite interesting. Well done to those who kept at it.
Fantastic times up front by Tim and Sam. Laptimes anyone would be proud of in any GPL car going the normal way.

Clive, I'm trying to report myself for hitting Doni (everyone/thing else was as a result of the wall so I see no point in my reporting something that obvious) while clearing the track.
I see now from the replay that he didn't simply get bonked as I thought but was totally wiped out and it was actually Dave's green car that followed me out of the melee.

Even from both replays I'm struggling to figure out if I'd have been pushed into him by the cars bouncing around behind me or not but as I had decided to go anyway I think it needs considering when you moderate this.

Sorry to you Doni, even last night after the race I had no idea you'd been fired out of the track at that point :(

Actually I think that the "invisible block" exists on the original Papyrus track when you navigate the correct way, but the reaction from the crash box is not as severe. Many times I have thought that I had nailed Rascass and got my braking and line just about perfect to clip the apex, only to be bounced out as if I had hit something.
So, please address all complaints to :- GPL Ltd @Papyrus.  ;D

As for the moderation. I will wait a few days for anyone who wants to confess to their sins to put in their excuses before I look at handing out punishment beatings.  I like to be fair  ;D ::)

Hey, Tim!  Give the rest of us a chance at meeting the royals, would you?  :)  Grats, again, on a fine win.

Well done to Sam for P2 and a terrific recovery drive by Clive for P3 after being pole-axed like me on Lap01.

Weirdness is the only way to describe the shunt off the start.  Undiscovered country.  I actually thought for a split-second that I was going to sneak around the mess on the inside but Tim suddenly lurched off the bales to nose into me and I went for a triple gainer(pike position).  After I regained consciousness, I pulled away in the T84 only to find it was down about 40bhp.  I could barely pull top gear.  Not wishing to reset, I carried on as best as possible and picked up a couple of spots thanks to retirements.  Bit of a disappointment in that I was way off potential pace but I did enjoy running this famous circuit in reverse.

Tim...  No need to file.  Just one of the racin' type deals.
