Title: Joe Shaw Trophy Weekend 2017
Post by: EvilClive on March 15, 2017, 03:40:54 PM +0000
Summer is coming ( oh yes it is!!) and so is the series of races in remembrance of Joe Shaw, where many will fight it out to get their hands ( and name) on the fantastic Trophy.

This all leads up to the now annual GPL drivers convention and where it might be held.  ;D ;D

Last year we met at Brands Hatch for the  "Legends of Brands Hatch Superprix, Brands Hatch, Kent (HSCC)" which was generally thought to be a success by those who attended.

So this year...............where do we want to go??

I have done a little research to find race meetings where we can watch cars from the 1960's actually racing.
Below is a list of possible options:-

Legends of Brands Hatch Superprix, Brands Hatch, Kent (HSCC).      July 1st-2nd

Silverstone Classic.                      28th-30th July

Oulton Park Gold Cup                   26th-28th August

Hostoric Grand Prix Zandvoort      1st-3rd September

Goodwood Revival, (but it is expensive and the tickets need to be purchased around NOW). September 8th-10th

Spa Six Hours, Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium     15th - 17th Sep

There may be more options, so if anyone has any more info please throw it into the discussion.

My gut feeling is that we should go to the circuit where the greatest number will attend?

Ignore my preference because (again) that is roughly when I'll be back in Japan at the secret Waza training facility receiving HER wisdom.
I love the idea of Zandvoort though, and the Spa 6 hours has been on my list for years!
Both of these should feature excellent beer  ;D

I wouldn't mind if it's Brands again, for several reasons.

Malcolm, Joe's father, would love to go to Zandvoort I know, and it arguably could attract more members from the mainland as well. But we must keep in mind UKGPL is British and a venue on British soil would be more rational since most members are residing as well in the UK.

Wherever it's being taken place, I'll try to be there. I will prolly send the Joe Shaw Memorial Trophy by mail to Malcolm when the 2017 JSMT event is held so I don't have to travel with it without having a car; then Malcolm can make a new nameplate for the new winner and present the Trophy as well ;)

Brands Hatch was great last year. Whilst Goodwood has its own special charm it is over priced. For no particular reason I'd like to try Silverstone or Oulton Park but happy with Brands. Like Rob I suspect we will get a better turn out in the UK.

I thought that Brands was very good last year. It was very cheap and we could camp for free next time at the circuit. I really enjoyed how quiet it was there - so easy to watch and walk about and wander through the paddock. I'm afraid that the Silverstone Classic won't do those things and the track there is so far away from spectators. The Oulton Park Gold Cup is on a bank holiday weekend and so will be busy.
Brands may be the best place to attract UKGPLers that haven't come along yet, even though the cars on track may not be quite as exotic as on the other tracks. Anyone from London and the south east could come for the day and decide to do so at the last minute.
I'd be happy to come along to any of the UK tracks. Zandvoort may have a good claim as a destination though, especially if Robert wins the trophy again.

Been there, done that!   .........................................................oops guys! we forgot to tell Dean ??!!  :scared: :scared:

Just who was it who was supposed to tell him????

There is actually an outside chance of me getting to Toronto at some time. Now I am retired I should have time to visit my sister who has lived there for almost 45 yrs...about time I paid a visit?

If my bank accounts plays ball I'll be there! Zandvoort would be great, but I really enjoyed Brands Hatch last year as well. Not quite sure how far Oulton and Silverstone are from here, I'll have a look.

Tommie.

I think that I need to make a call about this weekend simply so that people can start making plans.

So, I am proposing that we go to Brands Hatch again this year simply because it worked so well last year and it is such good value for money.

£29:00 for the whole three days!!

Legends of Brands Hatch Superprix, Brands Hatch, Kent (HSCC).      July 1st-2nd

http://www.brandshatch.co.uk/calendar/2017/july/hscc-01-02-july.aspx

Last year we stayed at a nearby campsite which was OK and had a bar etc. But we discovered during the weekend that we could pitch our tents at the circuit for free. The slight downside would be that we would have to rely on the bars/restuarants/toilets/showers etc around the pit complex.

If we intend to camp at the circuit I cannot foresee any problems as we do not need to do any urgent booking.

But, if we feel that staying at the local campsite is preferable, then it would be good to have some numbers of members attending to book sufficient tents places etc.  as soon as possible.

Can any members planning to attend please post here.
I can ( almost) guarantee great weekend amongst fellow sim racers and it would be good to see some more faces, even if you come along for just a day out!!

Count me in.
I think that the on site camping is only for one night (Saturday) as it is a two day event this year and the gates open at 8am on Saturday. There doesn't seem to be a Friday night camping option. I think that the facilities at Brands are fine for staying there for one night and two days.
For those of us travelling a long way it would be sensible to stay overnight not too far away on the Friday night so that we can maximise watching the on track action on Saturday.

I will check with the relevant authorities at Brands Hatch, but I suspect that Friday camping might be available as many of the competitors will be there from Thursday evening and many will be using the facilities.

Watch this space for details...................

Thanks Clive for taking up the gauntlet  8) Don't forget your headache solving solution coffee!!  ;)

I'm planning to come, need to know what Tommie's plans are. If he doesn't go I might need to take a flight to Southend, London. Camping site or at track I don't mind...but I'm not going to try all the beers again either in combo of hot chili...  :P

Perhaps a few more from mainland Europe might make the journey too???

Good call Clive. If you get further info on camping at the circuit let me know.
If anyone is travelling from Europe I might be able to do a pick up from Gatwick airport. Southend is a bit out of the way for me.

Not really related, but nowhere else to put this:

Sounds like I'll be able to make it to the Vintage Grand Prix @ Mosport this year (June 15-18, weekend after the just-too-damned-expensive-for-my-budget-these-days other event in Montreal). Most of the Masters GP cars running the support race at Montreal will be stopping by this much more classic circuit, and at $20/day for spectators ($35 weekend pass), including paddock access, too good to pass up. Details as of now: http://varac.ca/news/historic-formula-one-to-run-at-the-2017-varac-vintage-grand-prix/

No idea exactly what will be there (looks like mostly DFV-based stuff, 1966-1995 timeframe was mentioned elsewhere), but I will be camera-equipped, so any requests may be fulfilled, amateurishly.

I might actually be able to make this then  ;D

I'll have to be a johnny come lately on letting you know as I won't know my movements this far in advance, but I hope to make it  :)

If last year is anything to go by then getting tickets will NOT be a problem, unlike Goodwood where it is probably already too late! So you could roll up on the day and still get in.

http://www.brandshatch.co.uk/calendar/2017/july/hscc-01-02-july.aspx

Plus, if I have understood the "camping at the circuit" issue correctly then we should have a whole field to ourselves, and it's free...this TBC.  ;) I have to make a telephone call and ask nicely  ;)

I suspect that as per last year Friday will be a practice/qualifying day so some may wish to get there Friday morning?

Also need to copy Malcolm Shaw in on the plans and hope that he can attend to present the trophy ( probably to Robert again!!  :-\ unless we all get our butts in gear!)

As said, I'm planning to come. Have contacted Tommie, but he yet has to make a decision, he's very busy. Depending on that I need to plan my travelling. If he doesn't go, or other continental Europeans, then I will fly to Southend (fom Eelde, Groningen airport).

Great news Robert.  ;D I hope that Tommie can make it this year, and it would be good if more of our European members could be there too.

If you fly over I am sure that we can arrange for someone to pick you up at Southend   ;)

Hearty congratulations to Robert for sweeping the Joe Shaw Series.  A pleasure to share the track with you, mate.

Indeed, my thanks to all who participated.  It was fun and rewarding to race with Joe in mind.

You may have noted a lack of posts from me of late.  I'm greatly restricting my computer terminal time in an effort to save from going blind.  I figure the less time in front of the monitor can't but be a help.  It's been not a lot of fun recently.  Lee's Weather Patch at full bore with maximum fog about describes it.  :(

Tom van Ostade just apped me he can't make it going to the UKGPL meeting/JSMT presentation. Means I need to make an alternative travel plan and will get back to you guys on that, there's one flight a day to Southend here but looks like the bastards double the prizes Friday to Monday! So might have to extend the trip a few days including thursday and fly back tuesday sleeping on the streets or so :P Will get back on that or travel with the train and/or boat...

In the meantime the Joe Shaw Memorial Trophy is heading back to the holy ground.

I have decided NOT to visit the UKGPL meeing/JSMT presentation. It's simply too complicated and too expensive currently to travel alone and stay...

Hope you guys understand ;)

Title: Re: Joe Shaw Trophy Weekend 2017
Post by: EvilClive on May 26, 2017, 01:26:01 PM +0100
That is a shame Robert, but I can understand the cost implications for you.

I am sure that we would have arranged to collect you from Southend and returned you to get the flight home.  I was anticipating that we would find space for you in one of the tents, just like we did last year. Perhaps we should have confirmed plans before, but I am notorious for being relaxed about these things  ::)

Plus, there would be no question of you sleeping on the streets!! between us we would have provided somewhere to stay with food and maybe even a beer.
Malcolm has confirmed that he has received the Trophy from you and he will be bringing it to Brands Hatch.

I am still trying to speak to the "right" person at Brands to get absolute confirmation about the free camping, but the phone calls are getting more frequent....they will get really pi**ed off with me soon and give us free camping just to stop the calls!!

At Last!!!

I have finally had an email confirming that the free camping area at Brands Hatch will be available on the 30th June and 1st July, and according to the website there are toilets available and water. We would have access to the various food outlets and bars within the circuit too.

OK Guys, I have booked tickets for Andy and myself for the weekend at Brands Hatch.

We are planning to arrive on Friday 30th and pitch our tent at the circuit in the free camping area, that gives us all of Saturday and Sunday to watch the action before travelling homewards on Sunday evening.

I will make contact with Malcolm Shaw to see when he is going to be at the track, although he will not be able to present the trophy to Robert ( again!!) as Robert cannot make it this year.

For anyone interested in joining us for the weekend or just the day the details are here...
http://www.brandshatch.co.uk/calendar/2017/july/hscc-01-02-july.aspx  Compared to Goodwood Revival it is a bargain at £29 for the whole weekend.

If last years event is anything to go by, then it was great entertainment with many of the cars from the 60's and 70's and just NOT crowded with acres of space to view the action. Free access to the paddock and adequate catering and refreshment outlets.

If any of you are contemplating a visit, drop me a PM and we can exchange mobile numbers so that we can actually find each other at the track.

Of course we will!!  :D
But, it might be an idea to bring your large tent if you can, because the catering establishments are not 24 hrs. I will PM you my mobile No...look for the large purple tent with a silver Mondeo Estate alongside.

See you there on Sunday Bill  ;) . Not sure if Phil is coming this year? he did post a few months back that he might put in an appearance.

Something to tidy up perhaps... The JSMT is all about finding a winner of the race series. Emphatically, that was Robert Fleurke, winning all three races, but what else happened?

There were incidents, but none reported. At Adelaide there was a mass disco just past half race distance for most of the remaining field, yet it doesn't matter because Robert was already the JSMT winner by then.
The top six were awarded points as in 9,6,4,3,2,1. Works standard drivers were limited to the BRM, Honda, Cooper or Brabham, using a different car for each race. No non Works drivers made the top six in any race, despite this handicap and two Eagle friendly tracks.
19 drivers attended Carthage, 17 were at Tripoli, 16 at Adelaide.
Largest gap was Robert (1st) to Doni (2nd) at Adelaide of 1.33.723
Smallest gap was Andy (5th) to Iestyn (6th) at Tripoli of 0.017 seconds hahaha!
Robert was the only driver to score at all three races and the only one to have an odd number total.

1st Robert 27 points
2nd= Tris and Doni 8
4th= Tim and Axel 6
6th= Greg, Clive, Pelle and Dean 4
10th= Andy and Iestyn 2

If anyone else thinks that they might like to come along and meet Malcolm, watch some historic racing, laugh at our regional accents/baldness/facial hair then PM somebody that you know is going and we will arrange to meet up at Brands Hatch this weekend.

It was indeed a good weekend and great to see some familiar faces....they are getting more familiar with each year!!!

Malcolm and Beverley joined us on Saturday and we enjoyed the racing including some very noisy Formula 5000's and some quiet refreshments before adjourning to South Bank to present the Joe Shaw Memorial Trophy to a virtual Robert Fleurke.  Although there was nothing virtual about his domination of this years races!!!

Andy came up to my house and we loaded our stuff into my trusty Mondeo, leaving Bristol around midday we arrived first on the Friday ( followed a few hours later by Tim Muttram ) to discover that the camping field was excellent. Although very close to the action it was just outside the gates in the circuit security fencing, which was to prove the only flaw in our plans. Any nocturnal visits to the "facilities" after 23:00 required a 400mtr hike back to the main entrance and a walk through a deserted and ghostly Brands Hatch.........better to plan when to have that last beer and ensure that a last trip was made before the security gate was locked!!
We could not really complain as the camping was free and we had access to the Kentagon Restaurant/Bar for a cooked meal each evening and a Full English Breakfast in the mornings.
Friday evening we dined in the Kentagon and afterwards discovered that the pits and the track were open to anyone....too good a chance to miss!! So we walked around the Brands Hatch Indy circuit before returning to the tents.
Saturday dawned overcast but dry and warm, and a leisurely start at 9 a.m. for some qualifying runs in various classes allowed time to partake of a cooked breakfast in a totally uncrowded Kentagon before the days action got started.
Phil arrived complete with camera and lenses ( although not as big as some other guys were waving about!!)   late morning and we met up at Druids where Malcolm and Beverley found us a little later.

The Racing was good fun in all the classes with some great battles right up until the end of hostilities at 6:30, whereupon we adjourned to the Kentagon ( again) for a meal and a well deserved pint.....well I felt that I deserved it!!
A group decision was made to walk a lap of the Full GP circuit on Saturday night, simply because we could.
So we set off down over Paddock Hill Bend. Don't let anyone tell you that Brands Hatch has undulations...it doesn't, it has ruddy mountains!! the hills that we negotiate on GPL do not give any impression of how steep this track is, or the camber across the track at various points.
We walked a lap in approximately 1:15...that is 1 Hour 15 mins, not 1 minute 15 seconds!!! a distance of 2.4 miles and it was a close finish as we crossed the line.
Back to the tents for a couple of cans of beer and a last dash to the facilities before the quick route gates were locked for the night and our sleeping bags beckoned.
Sunday morning dawned bright and clear and with a 10 a.m. start to the action, yet another leisurely breakfast before we moved out to watch the racing and the arrival of Billy and Vosblod to complete the gathering of UKGPL members.
A wander through the paddock looking at the various machinery and some photos during the day, intermingled with vicious sunshine and intense racing made for a perfect day, which finished only 3 minutes before the legal deadline for noise at 6:30p.m.

A steady drive back to Bristol, arriving just too late to join in Sunday evening's race ( joining the race might not have gone down to well after being away for the weekend anyway!) from where Andy had to make a long last leg onwards to Tavistock.

Title: Re: Joe Shaw Trophy Weekend 2017
Post by: EvilClive on July 05, 2017, 01:19:58 PM +0100
We had several discussions over the weekend about our annual gathering for the JSMT. There were various views about what members of UKGPL expected or wanted from such an event.
Malcolm was even floating the idea of a "hands on" event of some sort where attendees could drive a real car on a track day, or maybe we could arrange a small network of PC's and have a weekend of GPL racing whilst actually being in the same room??!!

The current format where we meet at a suitable real life motor racing event ( usually with an "Historic" element) has evolved from my early trips to the Goodwood Revival. Although perfect in terms of the cars appearing, Goodwood is VERY expensive when compared to the deal we had at Brands Hatch....a difference of around £300 at the Revival, compared to £29 at Brands Hatch when we include camping etc.

Maybe there are many members who just have no desire to meet up and socialise with other sim-racers and prefer to keep their relationship "virtual" and we have to respect that.

All I can say is that for those of us who meet up each year, and manage to stay for the whole weekend , the social element of talking about our hobby and discussing  stuff in general over a beer or two adds a whole new dimension.

As I said above, this annual general meeting has traditionally  been held at Motor Racing Venues, but it does not have to be if someone has a better idea. If you think that there are alternatives that might appeal to a larger number of members then speak up and between us we might be able to make it happen.
We have 12 months to plan the next JSMT presentation, or even the UKGPL Christmas Party if that is what people want!!!  lol ;D :D :D

As I posted earlier in this thread re Joe revealing my vision problems, I thought it might post again here instead of starting a new thread.  Hope that's OK.

If I could draw you to this thread over at Speedgeezers...

...you will see the latest update as of just yesterday.  See post #7.

There were many events with the OAO and the UKGPL this season where I simply DQ'd myself to start at the back to avoid close quarters early on.  I simply didn't trust that my vision could cope.  With any luck, that policy is history.   :)
