Post by: Billy Nobrakes on April 13, 2017, 11:29:27 PM +0100
Season 31-Joe Shaw Trophy – Carthage

For several years UKGPL has staged a Joe Shaw Trophy series in remembrance of young Joe Shaw ( Beefpie) who raced with us before his tragic death. He was a seriously quick driver both here at GPL and in Real life motor sport.

As usual we will be using the original 67 cars and the points won over the three races will decide who gets their hands on the magnificent trophy that Malcolm Shaw ( Joe's father) has provided. The winner might like to join us at Brands Hatch for the race weekend on the 1st July where hopefully Malcom will join us to present the trophy.

Points are awarded on the historic scale, 9 for a win down to 1 point for 6th. The series will run over three rounds at Carthage, Tripoli & Adelaide.

For Round 1 we visit Tunisia, Northern Africa, to race at the dusty Carthage Street Circuit. It is a very fast 7.816 mile triangular highway circuit at the Tunisian coast line. We will use the 1935 version of Carthage (carta35).

Race List = iGOR
Server = UKGPL_8
IP = see iGOR
Race date = Tuesday 18-04-2017
Time = 21:00 UK time (21:00 GMT)

HANDICAPPING
Works standard drivers (you know who you are) are not permitted to take the Eagle, Lotus or Ferrari. Every driver must use a different car for each race in this series. Breach of the handicapping rules will result in disqualification.

Unlimited Resets are permitted, but each must be followed by a Stop & Go in the Pit lane within 2 laps of the incident. A Reset on the last lap will result in a time penalty of 15 seconds.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

OK guys desperately rebuilding GPL/GEM/IGOR here after AVG totally screwed things.

 I am almost there, but I need to find the 60fps patches to add to GEM? Can anyone direct me to the d/load source for the latest versions please? All I can find is the older patches  :-\

Really want to be on the grid for the JSMT tomorrow.......

Can't remember how it's installed now - but if all you need are the XML files I have the V1 and V2 ones here in their ZIP archives. They're dated as 2009 according the creation dates, but that's presumably what I'm driving with..
I can email them to you if you need them (Although that's unlikely to happen now before 5pm tomorrow, due to bed/work/pesky real life stuff

Annoying... Screen freeze during practice, Got back in with 10s to spare, lined up on the grid got off the line and ran out of gears PDQ as GPL had reverted to the default set up. Waste of time continuing around here with such a low top speed retired.

Prepped with the help of Hristo Itchov setups, and beat his Honda time in quali, fastest ever Honda at this track! :)

Had too much wheelspin at the start and Tris got me before I drafted back to the inside having the line for the first turn, then Tris drafted past me. I did the same as the turn before having the inside. We went side by side through the tight righthander before I completed the pass, and that was exciting. Tris drafted past me again before going wide at the fast left-right chicane and I got by before the last section. Axel was sitting in the catbird seat just waiting to pounce on mistakes and also got Tris. This gave me a bit of air and both had lost the tow. From then gradually made a gap, and managed the volatile Honda engine.

Was a funrace early on, in a way it's a shame Tris lost touch and made a few mistakes since he came back strong last 3 laps. Well done and nice fast lap! Also great job Greg with a very good pace. Well done finishers and commiserations to the DNFs. Tripoli will be way different since the topcars make more difference there. ;)

Great to see a full grid, and my effort was for the late Joe Shaw and his family!  :)

PS: this was also the first race running JoyToKey, assigning a mouse click to my upshift. My screens didn't go into sleep! Many thanks to Jeep/Hamster for pointing it out and helping me with it! :)

Congrats Rob and Tris! Excellent lap times Rob and Tristan.

After a terrible start, I had a lot of fun. I figured I was out of the race after a barrel roll at T1. I couldn't hold the outside line after bogging on line allowed Andy to get inside me entering T1. At least I didn't collect anybody else with my screw up. :) I thought of trying to reset but figured it was pointless since I assumed incorrectly that we were on Pro damage. The car felt bad the first 2 or 3 laps but wasn't bad enough to stop me. By lap 7 or 8 I was moving along well. I screwed up one time on lap 15. I missed my braking point by 50 meters. I hit that dreaded kerb at T1 again. :lol: It didn't take long to realize something was wrong. The car felt fine but I wasn't going as fast as I should have been. At the rate Tim was going the last few laps, he'd have caught me if he had another lap or two.

I drove well except for the 4 mistakes. Sam must have ESCed just before I was going to clip him. I didn't heed the skidmarks like I should have. I was surprised Sam screwed up so bad that I caught him. I was also a little surprised Tim made it easy for me too. I thought I could catch Tim. I never imagined I'd catch Sam.

Clive, I tried to destroy the engine. I made some lousy upshifts. I have doubts the engine would have allowed that on Pro damage. And look at Rob's rpms at the end of the straights! He tried more than I did to trash his engine. I have bigger doubts Rob's engine would have survived on Pro damage with those rpms.

managed the volatile Honda engine.

:lol: It looks like you tested it severely on the straights. It made me cringe watching it. I thought my 5th gear was short especially if ran much in the tow. It was good without a tow.

It's good to see that you're getting your computer running better. So when you upshift it acts like a mouse click too? I've thought of using JoyToKey to assign F10 or Shift+R to a button on my wheel.

Thanks guys. I'm glad to get to race in another of Joe's memorial races.

Thanks Greg, but it isn't so much about rpm's in top gear (even when more rpm's make the engine run hotter ofcourse) as long you're not overrevving upshifting and the Honda engine temp stays below 110C. I had set 5th gear 1 click taller than Hristo's race setup running just over 11,000 rpm, and a taller 3rd gear. You need the Honda to run below at least 110C (if the track allows I aim for 100-105C). Here it would run in the 103-110C region during a lap. Surely INT damage helps a bit, but most of the time shifted below 11,000 rpm in the race.

So in short terms, my racesetup was conservative and I drove conservative managing the engine! Check my last lap for example in GPLRA/gearchange analyzer and graph :P

As for JoyToKey, that is a solution if you don't use wheel software to assign button functions. Make sure you run it as admin, and associate profile with apps under settings. ;)

Congrats to Rob for a fine race win and to Tris and Greg for rounding the podium.

The first half of my race was pretty decent. I was hanging onto Tris in 3rd although not able to get close enough to make a pass. Eventually I lost the back end to spun out of contention. After rejoining, my consistency was appalling. I either spun, went wide, clipped the barrier, you name it, every flaming lap  ::). Greg is correct, I was facing backwards in the Esses after yet another spin, just inviting another accident to happen, so quit to avoid a collision. Probably just as well, I was letting my frustrations getting the better of me.

Think I'll be attempting to drive in a calmer manner next time, easier said than done mind  ;).

Great to see this Joe Shaw Trophy race so well supported  :thumbup2:

After the scare in qually, I was hugely relieved that there was no screen freeze during the race.   :sweatdrop:

The selection of tracks and cars was quite deliberate, plus these 3 races are at circuits we have not used for a while, so I was hoping to challenge the "elite" drivers and give some hope to the "gentlemen drivers". When I saw the race result and the Honda whitewash I wondered where I had gone wrong???!!  I suspect, like Robert, that Tripoli might give the Lotus/Eagle brigade more chance.

I was having probs with my GPL install after AVG updated screwed my computer and only got it finally sorted and ready to race on Monday afternoon. So no chance to get any serious practice, not that I would have lived with the leader's pace anyway.
I was happy to start at the rear of the grid once I knew I had zero chance of getting onto the front rows. We used to race this circuit quite often many years ago and T1 and T2 regularly caused chaos. So I figured that midfield was likely to be unsafe. So what did you guys do?? I think there was only one incident that took out 2 cars!!, instead of a total crashfest and 10 cars parked and bent?? Actually well done guys, it could have been much worse.
Slowly wound up the wick on the Waza and as others had minor offs and incidents I climbed from 15th to 5th and had a good dice with Doni and David...until I stopped looking where I was going and studied the mirrors to see how far behind Doni was. But on the up side I did see some interesting desert flora................
The rest of the race was a slow hunting down of Doni, but he was just quick enough to hold me off  :-\

Grats to Rob Tris and Greg....hope we all get another great battle at Tripoli .

I thought the privateers might have fared a little better but ultimately the Works drivers were faster & made fewer mistakes. The finish was a white whale parade. We must all swap cars for Tripoli, maybe the Lotus will do better?

Bastian ran some fast laps during the race in the Eagle, if he had been consistent he could have done very well for example, but the Honda isn't a bad car here at all. Also Axel challenged until he made a mistake ;)

I'm pretty sure things will be more mixed up at Tripoli, but the Privs have to be consistent if they want to beat Works drivers. Love to see someone else winning the Trophy, but they have to race for it. I'm committed to give my best, especially for the remembrance of Joe and his family. It was great to meet Malcolm and Bev last year and receiving the Trophy that's still sitting here (will contact Malcolm soon how or what to do).

Hi Rob,
 Glad Joytokey gives the desired results..  :thumbup1:

Just one thing to bear in mind, suggesting the Throttle to action the mouse click rather than the shift up paddle/button was not a chance remark. Think of the odd oval race you might join..... Once in top gear you are likely to stay there for the duration where as you would probably have to back off the throttle during a typical lap.
