Title: UKGPL Season 31 (2017) - Tripoli - Apr 23
Post by: EvilClive on April 21, 2017, 08:08:24 PM +0100
Season 31-Joe Shaw Trophy – Tripoli Mellaha Lake

For several years UKGPL has staged a Joe Shaw Trophy series in remembrance of young Joe Shaw ( Beefpie) who raced with us before his tragic death. He was a seriously quick driver both here at GPL and in Real life motor sport.

As usual we will be using the original 67 cars and the points won over the three races will decide who gets their hands on the magnificent trophy that Malcolm Shaw ( Joe's father) has provided. The winner might like to join us at Brands Hatch for the race weekend on the 1st July where hopefully Malcom will join us to present the trophy.

Points are awarded on the historic scale, 9 for a win down to 1 point for 6th. The series will run over three rounds at Carthage, Tripoli & Adelaide.

For Round 2 we visit the desert again at Tripoli, to race at the dusty Mellaha Lake. It is a very fast circuit with probably only 2 real braking zones. Carrying speed is crucial here and those Ams who can use the faster cars AND be consistent might be in a position to challenge at the front of the field,

Thanks teamie :)

Inherited the lead when Bastian went off and Pelle went flying at T1 on Lap 1, Axel stayed relatively close for a while but couldn't close the gap until he made a mistake...just won on consistency, like often ;)

Well done Axel and Pelle, and finishers! Cya at Adelaide ;)

Fantastic win in the BRM, Robert and with two wins you retain the trophy. See you at Brands. Only Tim has also scored in both races with two 4ths.

I had a steady run with no troubles. Iestyn was off at the second to last T1 and I held him until after the last corner last lap. He flew by then, but I caught his tail and managed to repass just on the line. Great fun.

Grats Robert. A truly great race in memory of Joe with some fantastic drives.

Our problem is that you are not only winning through consistency Robert, but you are damned fast as well!!! :helpsmilie:

Some very fast drives in the slower cars and for a while there was the chance of a couple of Ams getting on ( or close to) the podium.
Bastian was certainly fast enough and got on his car onto pole, but an early mistake dropped him back. Then Phil made his way through the packed ranks of BRMs and Hondas to run as high as 3rd at one point and a sniff of the champagne before he too made an error and dropped back.
Andy and Iestyn had an epic battle and swapped places a couple of times over the last laps. It looked like Andy had the place stitched up going into the last lap, but Iestyn carried tremendous speed and on the run to the line swept past. I thought that he had stolen the place from Andy, but West Country guile allowed Andy to tuck in behind and get the draft that just, and only just!, retook the place on the line.

Adelaide is a different sort of track but I hope that the racing is just as intense.

A real mess. Already in the first corner but in lap 2 i was too fas by the slipstream and even hit someone. i'm sorry.

I really made my way back to 9th with 38 seconds to the leader, but then....again messed up :(

Grats to all consistent drivers !

Report (http://www.gpl1967.dk/GPL/Replays/UKGPL/Replay/S31_JST_Tripoli_R2/index.html) (http://www.gt-legends.dk/GTLDK/images/smilies/yeah.gif)

Wow, this track is amazing, never thought I'd run it before, but had an Eagle setup...which I didn't have to use. :'(  Copied a Spa to my McHonda & after a little change, it was fast.

...but first to the most incredible, on paper Tripoli & BRM=Slow...but RF made today's best job, awesome & Big Grats :thumbup1: ...& to Cookie for 2nd :thumbup1:

Qual:
Pole, perfect  :D

Race:
Had put fuel for 18 laps, far too much & the car was really heavy on the starting line  :-\
The first mistake was already on lap 1, in the first turn (no idea what it's called) where you really got to brake, getting half up of mountain & lucky. I'm really slow in this turn, Cookie hits my rear wheel, later Tris just passes in a BRM. Later when there was room I tried to go down in the 1st gear that caused the rear wheels locked & I was all the way up the mountain  ;D ...now down to a 7th place  :(

Anyway, lucky to see the man with the checkered flag with a 3rd place in a fun race
F.Molteni (Francesco?) also deserves a trophy...for best crash  ::)

Thx all for a really fun race  :thumbup2:

I wasn't expecting to be able to attend any of these races as Tuesday's are usually impossible for me. But an opportunity meant I managed to make the Cathage round (And had a disaster). I assumed these were on consecutive Tuesdays so did not prepare for this one at all (I really must read the posts more thoroughly). Then about 30 mins before the flag dropped realised This one was on Sunday, So downloaded the track, changed the gearing of the default set up and did a few laps posting a very dismal 2:58 and lined up last on  the grid still learning exactly where the track actually went.

Start was average but made up a few places and then went wide at the 1st serious righ hander and managed to lose a few places so was back almost where I started.

Managed to pick a few people off as they either had offs or I actually managed to make the Lotus sing and use the draft to good effect, then again lost a few as I either had to take evasive action to miss (or not) others having their own moments. Slowly somehow managed to get myself up to the heady heights of 8th before losing it to Bastian I think who then lost it himself, I over reacted and ended up on my roof requiring a Shift-r and S&G putting me back somewhere around 12/13th slowly again made up places as others fell by the wayside and by around lap 12 or so was finally remembering where the track went next. Eventually finished 8th, had great fun, annoyed at my mistakes but surprisingly close racing on such a long track. Never raced here before but hope to see it on the calender again in the future.

Sadly can't make Adelaide (Another Tuesday). But glad to have at least made 2 out of the 3, I didn't know Joe but he is obviously a really nice guy and good driver as well. I will definitely try to make the whole series next year.

Thanks guys

TTFN
John.
