Season 31 Privateers Trophy - Round 06 - Nurburgring

After a short break the second half of the season gets underway. Like the Works Trophy, so far there have been 5 different winners in the Privateers division. Fulvio Policardi has a narrow lead in the championship over Bastian Grupp & Andy Livingston as we enter the second half of the championship.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1967 season, the UKGPL season will take place on 10 of the 11 original circuits. For the sixth round of the season we contest the German GP at the infamous Nurburgring.

After World War II, racing resumed in 1947 and in 1951, the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring again became the main venue for the German Grand Prix. On 5 August 1961, during practice for the 1961 German Grand Prix, Phil Hill became the first person to complete a lap of the Nordschleife in under 9 minutes, with a lap of 8 minutes 55.2 seconds in the Ferrari 156 "Sharknose" Formula One car. Over half a century later, the highest-performing road cars have difficulty breaking 8 minutes without a professional race driver or one very familiar with the track.

By the late 1960s, the Nordschleife and many other tracks were becoming increasingly dangerous for the latest generation of F1 cars. In 1967, a chicane was added before the start/finish straight in order to reduce speeds at the pit lane entry. Even this change, however, was not enough to keep Stewart from nicknaming it "The Green Hell" following his victory in the 1968 German Grand Prix amid a driving rainstorm and thick fog.

Note the Privateers division is run on Intermediate damage settings. Drivers are permitted 1 Shift R followed by a Stop & Go in the pit lane within 2 laps. Failure to make a stop will result in a 30 second time penalty. If you require a stop & go on the final lap & are unable to complete a time penalty of 15 secs is added.

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.  

This Season we don't have a Red Zone. Moderating will be on reported incidents only. If you haven't received a PM about an incident before the link below the results table is removed, you can be sure that you will not appear in the moderator's report.

The chassis token system is explained on the Privateers standings page. Please ensure you choose a chassis that is within your budget, which can be seen by hovering the mouse over your points total in the standings.

I'm going to miss this one, it is our wedding anniversary on Monday and we are off to the Cotswolds for a couple of days.  Good luck gents, the series is still wide open have a great race. Pity Nurby was this round, it's my favourite circuit.

As it happens today is my wedding anniversary. I am not taking my wife to the Cotswolds for the weekend. If husbands were 67 F1 cars, my wife would be driving the BRM. Hoping some theatre tickets will get me upgraded to  a Cooper.

Sorry to Billy and Curtis for the incident at the start.I don't know if the you have my same version of the track but the breaking point at the first curve is quite invisible.After 2 engine fail i gain only penalty.

I had problems braking for turn 1 also. I decided to lock the brakes and spin to a stop. I made a lot of mistakes in the first four laps. My car should have sustained more damage than it did. Luckily, the BRM was extremely durable. Good race to all my competitors! I lost positions each time I made a mistake. For me, the race was very enjoyable. I improved a lot on my last two laps. Pepe was still able to stay close behind in my mirrors. I knew that Dave C. was too far ahead. He still is just a little better than I am at this track.

5th was not too bad a result against a good field.  I qualified 6th, but screwed up my last qualy lap.  Avoided the various accidents in the race. After 1 lap I literally didn't see a car for the rest of the race (I heard a few).  Somehow in 2003 I did an 8.20 - I don't think I'll ever do that again!

What Ronnie said. I did a PB 8:33 in the Cooper 17 years ago. These days I'd crawl over hot coals to come within 20 seconds of that.

I was trying to learn a lesson from an avoidable contact after the first corner on lap one three weeks ago at Silverstone. Had I been using the F10 (helicopter) view at the start of that race, I'd have seen Francesco coming up hard behind me on my right. So today I started with F10 view and was able to watch three or four cars crashing around like bumper cars in the amusement park at the entrance to T1 on the first lap. I had an unsettling suspicion that somehow I was at fault once again, but so far I've been too cowardly to watch the replay. Maybe a few glasses of red wine will get me more in the mood.

The remainder of the race went depressingly as I'd feared. Although I spent more than eight hours running laps here during the past three weeks, I never found the slightest hint of consistency or confidence (nor did I find them today). I know this is a long, hard track, but I somehow manage to make it feel even longer and more difficult than it should be. It is an infamous venue, and justly so.

Still, the track has a place in my heart. In 1968 a close friend of mine, Bill Scott, raced a Formula Vee at the Ring en route to winning the world championship that year. I believe he told me --- if I am in error, I beg to be forgiven and quickly corrected --- that he was running laps faster than Fangio had done in the 1957 F1 race. I do not think that I am in a position to be a threat to either of those great drivers just yet, but I'll keep plugging away at it. At least I can appreciate to some modest degree how they must have felt during those endless miles. For me it's the best gift that this amazing game can give.

I'm quite worried,starting with the Joe Shaw trophy there is no race where i have not broken the engine 2 times per race.Bad luck or something other?
Is strange that i start season,in all the cup,without this problem and i was convinced to have overcome the typical problem of the previous season.Seem not so.

As expected this turned into the usual lonely endurance race so I was glad I hadn't wasted any tokens. A few offs and spins but no damage to myself or others.
I did manage some sub 10 minute laps but still haven't broken the 9 minute barrier. And now to catch up with 'Line of Duty' ;D

I tried out five of the chassis in advance of this race, to try and find the most stable one.  In my pre-season planning, I had this as a Lotus race (my favourite car, and the one I clocked the 8:20 in), but it was a bit twitchy.  I almost took the Brabham, because I was matching the (new) Lotus times, but I eventually I plumped for the Ferrari - strong, stable and quite fast.

Whilst I have conquered my fear of the track - I used to feel like I was driving from one potential accident spot to another - it was gruelling, and just 6 laps felt like one constant 90-mile circuit!

I was doing a nice race :  after 3,25 laps I was 2nd with around 5 secondes after Jeep and 12/15 seconds behind Bastian and Fulvio.
I was running with a regular 8'33 - 8'35 (my PB with a Cooper is 8'23''95 and I did it last week) so I was not taking too much risks.
But I made a big mistake on lap 4, had to reset and stop and go ...and lost every chance to get a podium here.
Moreover for the title, I have now quite no more chance.

Grats to Jeep for a great win !

It is not the first time, I saw Axel giving up without reset.
Even with a reset and a stop and go, Axel would have been able to finish on the podium, here.

I have decided to do this season only "fun" races, but the Nürburgring is hard work for me, especially in 67s  ::)

A real tortoise and Hare race from my end. I knew my way around the ring but had only really driven the Lotus here and was quite capable of sub 8:20 laps in it. But the chances of me being able to string together more than 1 lap without chucking it at the hedges was remote so at the last minute I decided to take the Brabham. grabbed the Alison set up off the track database and other than adjusting brake balance and steering ratio pretty much took it as it was.

Only did the single lap in Q from a pit start and managed an 8:38 which put me 5th on the grid.

Start seemed to go smoothly for the front group and I grabbed a spot off Rainier exiting Südkehre when he seemed to get a bag full of wheelspin on the exit so I settled in behind Bastian, Alex and Fulvio. A coming together between Bastian and Alex on the entry into Hatzenbach right in front of me and I found myself in 2nd. The next lap or so saw Fulvio slowly extend away from me meanwhile Rainer who was so much faster than me was climbing all over my gearbox looking for a way through. It was not until the exit of Schwalbenschwanz that I was able to put some daylight between us  and extend the gap still further down Döttinger Höhe but by a third of the way round the next lap Rainer had assumed his normal service of pushing me at every opportunity. Around Lap 2? 3? (It all became a bit of a blur) Came across Fulvio who had lost it at Schwalbenschwanz so inherited the lead with a good few hundred yard lead over Rainer, Stuck with the plan of sacrificing any thought of pace for keeping it on the track and a few problems for others behind meant I was able to pull out quite a lead at 1 point with Bastian closing to within a few hundred yards at some points but being able to extend that quite considerably at the slightest whiff of a straight.

Into the final lap and I was a good 10s ahead so simply concentrated on hitting the apexes and keeping it clean, only crossed the line 3s ahead at the flag but never felt under pressure to push on.

Really enjoyed that 1 and my 1st win at UKGPL so 1 to savour for me especially at the "Green Hell". No damage or reset needed. Well down on the lap times of the faster guys but.... "To finish 1st, First you gotta finish".

Thanks to Pepe for advising of your shift-r. Typically the penalty for a last lap shift-r is 15 seconds. As you finished more than 15 seconds ahead of Bill, I've let the result stand as they are.
