Title: UKGPL Season 31 (2017) Specials Series Trophy - Nuerburgring 67R - May 2
Post by: EvilClive on May 01, 2017, 08:49:03 AM +0100
The Green Hell, now with an extra twist as we run it in reverse.

All of the tracks are the original Papyrus circuits that were published on the original CD, but we are running them in reverse direction. There will be a mixture of carsets to use through the season and for the next race we are using the 66 Can Am mod and these might prove a handful around the twists and turns
Please refer to the championship page ( or below) to see which cars you are eligible to use. The general focus is on fun and close racing for all, with the faster drivers limited to the slower cars.
Once again, running a familiar track in reverse changes how corners need to be approached. Fast corners can become slower and bends that were slow now are maybe not so slow.

In the 66 Can Am, Pros cannot drive the Lola T70 Chev 359, Lola T70 Ford 305, or McLaren M1B Chev 361

... I was away for the weekend.

He was having a go, among other things, on a sim at Donington around Donington. I think it was a generic '68 F1 car in Rfactor2, vanilla setup, not adjusted for gears (didn't need 5th). Sim bloke thought that trying an F3 trainer would be best, but he didn't know what he was dealing with. Soon Clive was in the 1.11's and the bloke was gobsmacked, never seen anything like it.

6 laps is 50 minutes here assuming I don't fall off too much.
It's the first track that seems slower, but not by that much!  :)

Not sure why i could not join this race but Igor showed the race as "n/a", and when I tried to join via IP got " you are not qualified to join this race"  ???

Investigating tracks/RVSEASON etc in GEM and the GRUBRUN track file is marked ...not installed...???  very, very strange.

Hope you guys enjoyed the race.

My efforts were embarrassing this race. Far too many errors. Simply not gelling with the Can-Ams yet. Congrats to those that made it to the line.

I realise now why no-one seemed to know where the track went early on - you must have all been too busy on the 55 mod!
Luckily for me I did my basic setup work 3 weeks ago and then missed out on the 55's until I saw the topic yesterday evening - I had lots of practice as a result ;D

I learnt the track in the Genie using a slightly raised Zandvort setup with longer gearing (8:45 or so in that state), and then decided to take something unusual and ( I thought at the time) unsuitable.
Surely the 427 Lola fit that bill as it had by far the most weight, too much power, and only two gears...

If I'm being 100% honest there was also a degree of gamesmanship in the choice, taking the genie again might allow me to get away from the line really fast - but I would be swamped on the main straight when the field had 2 miles to out horsepower me.
So I wanted to take the opposite position here as I felt I'd be too strong in a bigger 4 speed car. I picked something that would be terrible off the line but that had the power and speed to re-pass anything that got by at the start when on the straights. It was fun re-passing Sam at 200+mph while cruising at about 6 feet ;D

Once I was in front my original plan was simply to ignore what was behind as it wouldn't be able to pass anyway, and then scarper on all the straights.
As it turned out I was able to pull away in the twisty bits too as everyone else was being super cautious.

Congratulations to all who finished, that was no mean feat here - it would have been a hard race even going forwards.
Commiserations to the DNFs and also Clive, Nurby is another that's great fun backwards so you missed out  :(
