Post by: Cookie on July 25, 2017, 12:25:02 PM +0100
S31 - 55 F1 - Fun Race – Spa67

Next Fun event with the 55s takes place at THE classic Grand Prix circuit, the original triangular shaped course was designed in 1920 by Jules de Their and Henri Langlois Van Ophem. It used public roads between the towns of Spa, Malmedy and Stavelot.  The course was extremely fast and was made even faster in 1939 with the introduction of the famous Eau Rouge section.  The circuit was completely revised and shortened for the 1981 Belgian Grand Prix but it is the classic 60's 8.761 mile version of the track that we will use for this race.

This version of the circuit was used between 1946 and 1970 and corners like Eau Rouge, Burnenville and particularly Masta presented the drivers with exceptional challenges. Due to the combination of high speed, length and lack of any possible run off, the circuit was very dangerous and claimed the lives of many drivers.

The event is unmoderated – but the usual high standards are expected.

Works/Pro drivers should not use a silver car

Hey, Axel!  Nice recovery drive at Reims!  :)

I'll plan to attend this round.  Not sure on my ride as yet.  Most probably NOT the Gordini.

I noted in our Reims funsie race that some did a stop-n-go after performing a shift-R reset.  GYS!  It's not required!  See above...

How do I stop the front left from melting and chucking me into the field at Burnenville?   :(

Make it less understeer...

More front, less rear grip

I tested my new Landline for warp once in practice, and again on lap 1 at La Source.  Apologies to Dave for making the same test twice.  I had better brakes on my car to make the pass with, but not enough space to avoid trouble.  My green machine was unwilling to continue at full speed, so I cruised around, admiring the scenery.

My old hand-cranked computer, somehow survived a mid-sized grid of 1955's finest at Spa67, so the final finisher had something to cheer about!  :D

From early in the week I was struggling to connect to the internet.  This was originally put down to the motherboard having given up but after the replacement mobo, cpu and memory was fitted on Saturday and was found to replicate the same reluctance to talk to anything, despite the ethernet connection proclaming itself to be running properly, there had to be another cause.

Looks like it was a malware attack.  After a sweep for malware I then ran a niffty little programme called winsockxpfix.exe and all was well!  That happened at about 9:00pm.

My first attempt to join the server demonstrated that the onboard sound wasn't worth a light and I had to get out of the server and install my sound card.  But gpl had frozen so that wasn't simple.

I installed the card, which it reported was good to go and headed once more for Spa, arriving as the man with the flag was ending qually.

I took my place at the back of the grid, not having done a lap for days, and realised that all was silent.  I had forgotten to go into the control panel to tell it to use the sound card for audio.

My silent race wasn't bad and those people who think that these cars are difficult want to try them with the sound turned off before jumping to conclusions!

I gained as people had their moments and ended up following a Merc for some time, before I got a little over confident and had a high speed hedging and ditching session.

To finish the race I found myself in a battle with Evil Clive, 'twas ever thus, which sadly he got the better of but it was fun.

Thanks to Axel for running it.

Looking forward to the next one.

Oh, and the brake fade in on-line racing seemed much worse than when I practice off-line and nothing to do with slipstreaming either?

Grats to Tim for getting the Maserati working properly.
I was not surprised that I could not pass Francesco, his Merc was just too quick on the straights. It was a fun battle for many laps, but it showed that my gear ratios were wrong.

I could sit in his slipstream on the fast sections, I even had to back off to avoid over revving my engine. Through the corners I was quicker, but trying to carry extra speed and make a pass on the exit was difficult when Fran had all that extra horsepower. Eventually I tried too hard and ran wide, destroying a couple of trees and a lot of grass.

I almost quit, but then I saw Andy go past and Clive Loynes coming over the horizon. A quick SnG after the rest and I rejoined just behind a struggling Mr Loynes.

The Lancia should have been too quick for my fuel heavy Maserati, but he was definitely having issues through the corners  ;) I was able to set up the pass by using the slipstream and carrying extra pace through the previous corner. His only chance would be to use his pace and the slipstream on the fast sections, but I guess his lack of sound made maximising his speed difficult.  I know in the past when I have lost sound in the past  it makes judging upshifting/downshifting extremely difficult, so kudos to Clive for getting the car to the end.  :notworthy:

I hope to find some extra time to practice with these cars and the next race will really expose the brake fade issue .......should be fun ;D ;D

I'm not sure and Pelle was with the Ferrari not a Mercedes SL.

Slipstream, gearing, tire pressures and sometimes a poorly calibrated or faulty throttle pedal can all affect top speed.
I could hit 163mph out of tow and well over 170 when in a tow..
You may have simply had your gears too long or short to generate the power where you needed it :)

My race was great fun at first, 3 laps of solid battling with Pelle and Axel. Pelle was the first to fall off when he was slightly too cautious behind Axel on those horrible right handers at the end of the lap.
Axel had a massive tank slapper through Eau Rouge on about the 4th lap allowing me to get into first again - then I missed my apex slightly and drifted off the track about 3 corners later, rejoining a few hundred meters behind Axel.

I felt I had the faster car and was looking forward to seeing if I could chase him back down before the end of the race - only he disco'd before the lap was out :(

I just hotlapped from then on to see how fast I could go. This resulted in the odd accident as it always does at Spa.
I decided to do a stop and go anyway despite there being no need and must have wasted an extra 5 or 10 seconds slowing the last 10mph to a standstill!
Trying to come to a stop in a pitbox on a big hill is impossible in one of these things!  ;D

I'm certain there's a lot more time to come in the Masser as I can't say it handled very well in the race - Although I had dialed a lot of it out, I was still suffering badly from understeer which definitely made some of the fast sections a challenge.

Not that much kudos as I had a reset too!  So I was also heavy on fuel and deaf!  I planned to get back in front but that bloke with a chequered flag went and spoiled the fun!

Trying to come to a stop in a pitbox on a big hill is impossible in one of these things!  ;D

You need no brakes, only bravery and realistic blue smoke to stop these cars, provided the track supplies enough room to manoeuvre.  As an example, look towards the finish line at Spa - final finisher.

Freestyle stopping as demonstrated, would not come without it's risks. A pitstop missed stop on the racing line, might cause some worry.  Cars following usually prefer to create their own dangers.  And several at one time, could create a freestyle slalom at Spa.  While tracks using a separate pitlane are often narrow, making damage possible without good control.

Full use of brakes, is the the safest way to pitstop.  Anything else becomes a necessary adventure.
