Season 32 Works Trophy – Round 3 –  Road America

The third race in the Works Trophy takes us to Road America in the USA.  The track covers 640 acres (2.6 km2) within Wisconsin’s Kettle Moraine. It is near the Kettle Moraine Scenic Drive and has hosted races since September 1955. It currently hosts over 400 events a year. Road America has not been modified and retains its original configuration of 4.048 miles (6.515 km) in length and consisting of 14 turns. The track features many elevation changes, along with a long front stretch where speeds approaching 200 mph (320 km/h) may be reached. One of the best known features of this course is a demanding right hand turn known as "the kink." Road America's open seating allows spectators to venture throughout the grounds. Grandstands are available in several locations, as well as permanent hillside seating where crowds of more than 150,000 can be accommodated.

Guys which Road America is this? I think theres two versions of the track, the link takes you to a track released in 2017, but the lap records are 2012??  ???

The link is correct Art, we'll be racing the 2017 version. Why the 2012 lap records are showing I can't answer.

Sadly I won't be racing this round. I'll be moving house this weekend so that'll put me out of action for a short while. Hopefully will be able to get a new connection soon  :).

I found the same issues with the 66's last week. I had the "old" version in my track file and did a few practice laps to remind myself of the circuit, before I realised that the race link had an updated version.

I was quite disappointed to discover that what I thought were my world record laptimes, did not transfer to the new layout  :-\

The SROU database knows only one version of RA, as the track layout was never changed...

hmmmm.
Well I now have 2 versions of  Road America in my tracks file, they are definitely intended to be the same circuit, but there are some differences.

The older version which is called "Road America" I have had for many years and rarely used AFAIK, with less detailed graphics.  I believe that it was used many many years ago when UKGPL ran the Masters league?? or maybe it was BREASTS??.

And the latest version which we are now using that is "Road America Elkhart Lake".

The newer track has a much longer straight section from the pit exit to T1, and there also some distance differences at other parts of the track. It looks like the new version is slightly longer on total lap length, which would explain the slower lap times.

I think GPLRank also lists both options and the laptimes.

At GPLRank the latest version is called Road America CanAm. I recommend putting the trackdir name in the racepost, and linking to the track, in this case roadamer.

Clocks in the UK went back one hour last night.

I.e. race is an hour later for everyone not in the UK.

Also, I notice we're using UKGPL_9 for this race. With all of the issues I and others have been having joining that server, could this not have been tested PRIOR to scheduling it for a league event? Basically, expect a protest and a demand for a re-run if anyone has any trouble.

The server is up for a warmup before the main event. Please try and join and advise if there's any issues.

Sorry to hear. Like some, couldn't join, connection timed out everytime. After a reboot I could finally join, but didn't had enough time to set a laptime...

Started from the back, took it easy and avoided the T1 incident. Climbed up the ranks when some went off, then did need a few laps to get by Doni, but could "surprise" him at T2/T3. Tristan already was out of sight, I lost focus a bit and went off at the last turn losing more time. Late race Tristan retired, tough break, and inherited the win. Lucky win, certainly not my best of drives, struggled for focus and concentration. Passing Doni was fun tho, after he made me work for it. ;)

was fun to race again. I couldnt relax and did many mistakes I think is cause of lack of racing lately. Too easy distracted by other cars instead of driving my own car and had like 5 ish offs/spins.

I have to apologize to have caused Clive's retire.  :-[
I have tried many times to join without luck even on direct IP, then finally when I retry on Igor I got in. I was lucky to do one lap to qualy, but at the end of the lap my screen locked for a couple of seconds. The car was straight so I could remain on track but time suffered.
At the start I was fear that the screen locked again, but the start was good and passed Andreas that did some burnout moving. At the T1 braking my car didn't slow down soon cause my foot slided on clutch for a moment, I pointed to the outside lane that was more freee and when I braked I locked tires and got sideways. Funny situation, but not for Clive that was hit with big damage and ended upside. I ended in the grass and when I saw him on it roof I went back to hit him again hoping to put him on his leg, but too late, he disappeared.  :(
I restarted for a long pursuit and in the end I got second for a misfortune of Dony at last but one lap.
Anyway not much proud of myself...
Sorry again Clive, I'll report myself.

I

Grats to Robert, who showed his pace by coming from the back of the grid to take the win.

No problems Fulvio.  :)

I watched the replay and I could see that a rear wheel on the grass had put you sideways in the braking zone, before you collected me.  ;)  For me it was just an unfortunate Racing Incident.

Thx Clive, you're a gentleman :-)
And yes, I watched Robert's race and he had the patience to pass every car waiting for an error or a safe pass. Grats Robert!
Ciao

Good evening everyone,

New circuit and can drive, despite my advantage of the chassis EAGLE, I'm not fast.
In front of Tristan is the pole and flies away.

Very delicate race, no problem in practice but in the race it is catastrophic as soon as we are several, big drop of FPS.

Logan makes a great start in Honda, I can iron but it was limit.
Thank you for your fairplay.

The FPS are better and I am Tristan already far.

After an error I make a head queu and go back last I think.

I am very bad and end up breaking my engine.

Congratulations to the podium and finishers, thank you to the organizers and see you soon.

Also for me there were FPS drop with Directx. I shifted to Opengl and all went well...almost  ;D
I noted that my old ATI 5700 works steady with OpenGL on all new candy tracks even if the quality is worst than with DirectX.
Ciao
