Title: UKGPL Season 32 (2017-18) Graduates Cup Privateers (67) - Salzburgring - Nov 12
Post by: Samb on November 08, 2017, 05:54:02 PM +0000
Season 32 Privateers Trophy – Round 4 - Salzburgring

After Road America we visit another fast track, the Salzburgring in Austria.

The race track was first opened in 1968. Lying in a narrow, alpine valley, it has a rather simple layout, with two long straights plus the sweeping and fast "Fahrerlagerkurve" ("paddock turn") at the bottom of the course, and the narrow "Nockstein-Kehre" at the top. In spite of its simple layout, it garnered a fearsome reputation for the high speeds reached on the straights and the "Fahrerlagerkurve". Aussie 500cc two-wheeler great Wayne Gardner won here in 1987 on his way to Australia's first modern motorcycle racing World Title.

There are more versions but we will use Salzburgring76!

Note the Privateers division is run on Intermediate damage settings. Drivers are permitted 1 Shift R followed by a Stop & Go in the pit lane within 2 laps. Failure to make a stop will result in a 30 second time penalty. If you require a stop & go on the final lap & are unable to complete a time penalty of 15 secs is added.

I just wanted to comment that the default set-ups for this track are a pretty good starting point. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

Be sure to fill the tank & let as much air out the tyres as possible...
Please...?!

Maybe, we need to warn the drivers it is not allowed to cut the chicane before the pits and the starting line ...

I remember the last race here, 3 or 4 seasons ago  ;)

Mickey Mouse track. What I meant to say - lost the back end of the car in the hairpin twice in three laps - & it wasn't fun anymore.

Thoroughly enjoyed that one. Never more than a few 100yds between Dave and me. I fully expected to see a few more Eagles and/or Lotus on the grid considering it's basically 2 long straights connected by a chicane and a hairpin. Qualified 2nd about half a second adrift of Dave in a Lotus but got the jump on him at the start and was ahead by T1. Then over cooked it into the hairpin and he took the place back but I got a better run out of the turn and drafted him down the back straight and retook the position entering Ostschleife. Held the position for a good portion of the race although Dave was so much quicker than me into Nockstein-kehre that any advantage I managed to eek out was always cancelled out by the time we entered the turn. Eventually he got me back entering Ostschleife and despite being able to get right on his tail by the exit of the chicane I couldn't find a way past and even concentrating on the slipstream, huddled down behind the screen and redlining every gear I simply couldn't match the grunt of the Lotus when it mattered. But all in all a great race with Gareth lying in wait a few 100yds further back in a very fast BRM to capitalise on any incident which might have put Dave and me off the track.

Pepe.  have to ask.... What happened? We were coming up behind you and I was fully prepared to wait until the SF straight before making the pass as I couldn't see a way for Dave to get through unless I specifically let him. You seemed to have everything nicely in line then suddenly veered off into the Armco, It certainly made me jump.

TTFN
John.

Quite enjoyable, if a little lonely. Nicked a place off the line and there I stayed. I was able to keep with Dave and John in the early laps and with Cookie catching me I thought we were in for a battle, within a few laps though cookie dico'd and the pair ahead decided to up the pace and they quickly disappeared into the distance. So with no threat from behind and no chance of catching the leaders I just counted down the laps. grats to Dave and John.

I shouldn't even have taken the grid for this race, not having had anything close to the amount of practice I need for every track. But I looked at this place with pure contempt: How hard can this be, with two long straights connected by two simple corners? And the track quickly responded, equally contemptuously, by reminding me that at 180 mph things go from simple to very, very hard in a matter of milliseconds.

I'd never gone off line approaching the end of the back straight at all in what little practice I did have, but blew it completely on about L6, smashing into the armco and shearing off a wheel. I reset, did the S&G, and promptly repeated the same damned stunt as you and the other leaders were catching me. It's not only embarrassing, it's demoralizing. I'll try not to look so massively incompetent next time, but I always say that.   ;)

Very happy with what is is my 1st win since 2 seasons (in mod 67).
Nice close fight between our 2 cars (Jeep and me) from start to last lap (maximum gap during race should have been 1,5 sec).

With a Lotus against Jeep's usual Brabham, I only won with 0,22 sec so I can't see any possibility to win the championship this season.
