Season 32 Sports Car Trophy – Round 5 -  Targa Florio

The 5th round of the Sport Car Trophy we go to Sicily and drive a lap at the Targa Florio.

IMPORTANT

We will do "only" one racing lap, (but the server will show 2) so please be cooperative when a faster car/driver is behind you.
Please start your last qualifying lap with minimum ~ 30min time left!

GPL will shut the quali after ~11min overtiming, even if you are 100m from the finish line!

Race List =  IGOR
Server = UKGPL_8
IP Address = look at IGOR
Race date = 28-11-2017
GPL mod = 67GT
60fps patch used = 60fpsV1
Track = Targa Florio
Qualification = 20:45  UK time -> 45min
Race = race starts at ~21:30 UK time
Race length = ~40 min -> 1 laps
Damage Model = Int for this race no limits, shift+r! (with 1x shift+r allowed, followed by a stop+go.)
Replay = here (ftp://ftp.ukgpl9.co.uk:32122/Season32/Sports Car Trophy)

Driver lists and divisional rules can be found on the championship standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=619&theme=6)

Only reported incidents will be moderated, there is no Red Zone.

Handicapping and chassis allocation.
This season the Sports Car Trophy will be using a token system which allows drivers to purchase any chassis of their choice for a given number of tokens as published on the championship standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=619&theme=6). Drivers classed as Amateurs will be allocated an additional 10 tokens.  The token allocation will not be managed in SRou this season so (unlike the 67F1 Works and 67F1 Privateer divisions) the tokens available to each driver will not appear in the championship table (when the mouse pointer is hovered over the driver's total).  Rather, the available tokens will be published in the race announcement.  See below.

Available Tokens:
Note: These are the tokens available to each driver before the 10 tokens are added for making the race start.

...1x shift+r allowed, followed by a stop+go...

That's not really viable here.

Maybe we could stop and make the stop and go just near a house on the road ?

and what about this rule : Drivers must complete 50% race distance to score  ?

OMG this is the Targa...

For me it is ok to not limit the shift + r for Amateurs, but I think once is ok for Pros.

It's not the 1x shift-r (for pros only; unlimited for ams, fine by me), it's what do we do about the s&g?

Stopping beside the track is not equivalent, as there's no slowing down to get into pitlane like there normally would be. Can we agree on a flat +30 secs penalty per? Though that is more than a s&g at any other track would cost, for a one-off event like Targa, I think it's a reasonable compromise.

There is a rule to add 15 sec if you make a reset in the last lap...

So one-off rule for this round: "No s&g's, 15 secs added per shift-r"?

It is the only way to do it.  As Axel has pointed out, the rule under "Failing to take a S&G after a Shift-R (https://www.ukgpl.com/index.php/rules/penalties)" (which states 15 sec to be added for a missed S&G) covers this scenario anyway.

It is pretty unusual to have more than 1 Shift-R on a normal track.  But at the Targa is not a normal track!!

That's how I'd vote. It would be nice if everybody could complete a lap no matter how many resets it might take.

Well, that sucked.

Was going ok with whoever was in the white ford, I goofed, gave them the place, they goofed, gave it back, then came across Cookie sideways and all went to shit.

That was me Dean you were battling with in the early stages. I enjoyed that battle with you. In truth I was still desperately trying to learn the track during the race and often used you as a guide ahead. When I went ahead I did feel a bit blind, but a reduced pace allowed me to complete the tour without a shift-r. Towards the end of the lap I was battling with Axel. I was up to third briefly before throwing it away a few turns later  ::). Really enjoyed chasing that mighty Chaparral up to the line, even if I couldn't get through.

Congrats to Greg, Tim and Axel for their podium spots, that pace up front was truly admirable!

Grats to the podium and all those who completed the course, wish I could have been one of you.

Joined from Igor intending to take the safe and predictable Porker and survive the race. I don't think I have driven Targa in over 18months and I cannot say that I have ever truly learnt this epic track just maybe some sections are logged in the memory. I definitely have the first couple of miles from the start sorted and am reasonably confident about that long straight section too  ::).

Still some gremlins lurking in my new rig it seems.
My first time in the pits had basic graphics and I needed to recalibrate my wheel, plus I had joined with the wrong driver profile. Quit, re joined and set off for a feeler drive to check the setup and gearing. After about 30 seconds ....screen freeze ??!!! with a machine gun like sound track.
Crashed the PC/reboot/ and Igor is corrupted. I have a backup copy of GEM/IGOR ready on the desktop so swapped a fresh copy into place and joined again.
Another 30 seconds down the road and .........screen freeze #2!!!!?? with machine gun again  :-\
Once again crash/reboot/replace corrupted Igor/ and tried to join again but was just a few seconds too late and was locked out.
TBH I don't think my chances of travelling more than a minute without a screen freeze were slim.

I recall many years ago that several people had freeze issues across GPL and the culprit turned out to be the sound card drivers. When I got my new rig with all of it's power and resources, I turned everything in GPL to max including the sound and patching of car sounds in GEM.
I am going to try turning off the sound patch in Gem and reducing the number of sounds in GPL to around 4-5, ( which worked fine on my old PC) to see if reducing the load on the sound system solves this issue.

Clive it's a shame you have these troubles

You can remove the "carsound patch" from GEM\options as it only works with old 67 F1

W10 has a total different sound engine handling then XP, so imo it has other reasons...

Maybe your firewall is blocking the gplcgt.exe ?

I also suspect this value in the core.ini to be wrong

My race...

Sorry to Dean, when I blocked the road, I just wanted to turn a 90° spin and not reset ::)

I love the ChapF as my all time favourite car, so I took it  ;D
There is still a lot of guessing for me at the Targa, so I did a more safety drive, but couldn't avoid 2 mistakes...
The second was near the long straight so I had the chance to escape from Sam's GT40, but he gained a lot from the tow on the last straight mile  :D

Congrats Tim and Axel! And you too Sam! And congrats to all. This is a real test of patience.

I had expected this might be a spec race. I was surprised when Clive was the only other Porsche I saw. For 0 tokens, the Mk. 1 would have been more appealing. The Porsche is by far the best bargain, like the Mk.4 at LeMans. I had thought about taking the Mk. 1. But I thought Tim might beat me if he chose a Porsche. It appears my knowledge of the track is still much greater than his.

I only mentioned resets prerace because I think they're very important in learning this track. I'm impressed that Sam didn't need one. I don't think many have good knowledge of this track. I've probably done hundreds of resets. It's only recently that they've become rare for me.

I planned my season shortly after the schedule was posted. I've chosen what I thought would give me the most points over the entire season. I could have taken the Mk. 1 for this race but I decided I wanted to set a record that might last longer than myself.

I think my qualifying lap was clean. I can't remember hitting anything. That would be my 2nd clean lap. I did one in the Mk. 1 too. I'm getting close in all the cars now but I still seem to bump at least one or two guard rails or walls.

I was a little cautious. I was pleased to break 34:30. That seems to be a time I can reliably reproduce with the Porsche now.  I start having difficulties when I go for 34:10s. I'm still not sure how I did a 34:04. It would have been a clean lap too, except I turned in too soon once, and clipped an inside wall.

The race didn't go as well. I hit a concrete post once. I locked a front wheel two or three times. One of those resulted in a heavy hit on a guard rail but I did keep the car pointed in right direction throughout the race.

Sam, you probably don't need 1000 laps. 200 would probably get you and Tim close to my times, maybe even better. When I first started driving GPL, I did two laps every Sunday morning for 6 months. That would be 50 laps. At that point I was getting a general idea of what I needed to be doing. I'd still forget where I was 2 or 3 times a lap. Now I'd guess I have 200-300 laps here. I'm thinking I might know the track better than Vaccarella now, but I do still forget where I am on occasion. I mistook one turn for another turn during the race.

You're getting there Tim. I was stuck in the low 37s for a long time, the low 36s for a long time after that and about 35 flat in the 910 and 330 for a long time. Lots of practice and a great interest in the prototypes are what's got me to this point.

That sucks for Clive. He finally chose a car well suited to the track but couldn't race. I hope you can solve your problems.

That was an interesting choice of cars Axel. I thought you might take the easy way out like me and choose the Porsche. I also would have thought you might choose the Mk. 1 or Mirage. But I understand. I was tempted by the 330 and Lola. I intend to start working on the 2F at Targa. I'm curious what might be the 2nd fastest car for me, the T70 or the 2F?

Here's a few hints. The red and white warning signs usually represent something to me. I use them as a marker to begin turning, lift off the throttle, brake, or downshift. I think there only 2 or 3 I pass at full throttle. You can do donuts on the asphalt to the right of the pits to get some heat in your tires. 5 or 6 donuts and then locking your wheels before leaving pit road seem to be good for 10 seconds on an opening lap. For a while I had my first pit stall at Campofelice. That made it easy to set the highest gear for all the cars. It also helped to learn sector 4 well too. I should do that again. That will allow me to start a lap with warm tires.

The cars. The 910 and Mk.1 are easiest. Initially, I tried to learn Nurburgring in the 67 312 and Targa in the 330. I spared myself a lot of grief by later using the Porsche to learn those tracks. The big block Fords are easy in a certain way. They don't require many gearshifts. The key for me seems to be remaining patient and holding the rpms just below the red line near the end of most short straights. The 2F, I need more practice. The 2D, a nightmare, I can't get it to turn well. I spin a lot or clip something from running a little wide. The Lola and 330 are fun but difficult. Their good acceleration means they'll easily get you into trouble. The Mirage is similar but less extreme.

I hope someday I can get Helmut Marko's 3 liter Alfa on this track. The Porsche 908/03 would be a lot of fun too. The 512S and 917 would be interesting, in a "oh my god! I'm gonna die!" kind of way. :) A 70 or 71GT mod would cover just about all the cars I'd like to see in GPL.

My apologies for the long post.

Thanks guys. I appreciate you letting me race with you.

Grats to the podium and all those who completed the course, wish I could have been one of you.

Gutted for you Clive, I have to admit it's disheartening me a bit reading all your woes - I've been considering an Oculus for a while now but would need either Win8.1 or 10 to get the most out of it.
While 8.1 is an improvement over 8 I think it would still be like putting my head in a blender when ever I need to change a setting...
I dislike Win10 as it seems primarily to be a data gathering tool for Microsoft, but for a gaming PC should otherwise prove suitable - except you seem to be having major issues with GPL  :(
I'll have to install GPL on my laptop (It's a cheapy Win10 jobbie I bought for my travels last year) and join the practice servers (If the laptop can cope!) and see if I can get my head around it I think.

Well done to Greg on a commanding win - I realy have to try the Porsche here, I never have so far. But after Watching Greg just dance away from me in the corners maybe I should  ;D

I was especially amused to note that Dean had taken a Mk2 GT40. You must have arms like tree trunks after that  ;D

My own race went fairly well, I knocked 2 seconds off my qualifying pace which allowed me to beat my old PB in the 2D by a massive 0.2 seconds  :o
As I've only done about 2 laps in the last 3 years I'd tend to agree with Greg that the M1 is capable of some pretty good times if you have 'the knowledge'.

WD Axel on rounding out the podium and to everyone for persevering to the end - see you all at Spa

I've loaded the chassis the drivers used into the token calculator spreadsheet.  For the next race the available tokens will be as declared in the table below (the table will also appear in the next race announcement).  The calculated values are automated but selecting the cars is a manual process so please check your tokens to make sure I haven't made a silly error.  There was no token overspend for this round so no one is disqualified.

Available Tokens:
Note: These are the tokens available to each driver before the 10 tokens are added for making the race start.
