Season 32 Privateers Trophy – Round 9 - Porto

Round nine of the Privateers. At the penultimate race of the season it is time for some Portuguese sunshine.

The Portuguese Grand Prix was a motorsports event held for several years, mostly in the 1950s and then in the 1980s and 90s. It was a Formula One race between 1958 and 1960 and between 1984 and 1996.

The first event was held on the Boavista street course in Porto on 17 June 1951 as a sports car race. The Grand Prix was moved to Monsanto Park, Lisbon, in 1954 as a one-off. The first Formula One race was held in 14 August 1958 in Boavista, won by Stirling Moss in a Vanwall.

Note the Privateers division is run on Intermediate damage settings. Drivers are permitted 1 Shift R followed by a Stop & Go in the pit lane within 2 laps. Failure to make a stop will result in a 30 second time penalty. If you require a stop & go on the final lap & are unable to complete a time penalty of 15 secs is added.

SORRY bastian but the car was out of control.I don't know what happen this evening but 2 engine explosion in 5 laps is strange,seem to me to be returned to the old pedals.

Grats John on a fine win. I was quite pleased with my pace tonight but I made too many silly mistakes to have any chance of keeping up with the leaders. John and Cookie were in a class of their own.  I know I'm driving well when I'm having a battle with David, I only just held on to third place. Dave was very quick in the closing stages. I think I'm finally getting used to the right foot braking and clutch control.  I can dip the clutch when changing down without affecting my braking. It has taken a while to "unlearn" left foot braking, now my left foot works the clutch as it should and doesn't try to brake!

np. difficult track but quite fast. i made too many mistakes.

The field was rather quicker than I was expecting. We raced here several seasons ago. I did not get below 2.20 but still finished on the podium. A 2.18 in the race was a PB but well off the pace. I played around with the set up & more aggressive on the twisty section after the race & got a 2.16. Wish I had known that earlier.
Congrats to John, I think sews up the championship.

John would have terminated second if he drove among the Works (with only 8 sec more than the winner)
And Axel would have been the quickest of the two series without its final problems.

Well, I had resigned myself to 2nd here even after a few laps in. Cookie just drove away off into the distance. I knew my car would begin to behave itself more predictably over what I felt was a very weird surface to race on from about half distance so had to be content to let him "Play the Hare to my Tortoise" and pray for divine intervention. It came at about 2/3 distance when a gap of 0.8mile suddenly became around 400yds due to Axel blowing his engine and taking a S&G. Smelling Blood I started to push and was rewarded when he put a rear wheel on the dirt in the final right hand combination near the end of the lap and I was through. I fully expected him to be over me like a rash knowing just how fast he was. (I was unaware he had done a S&G and was therefore on full tanks).  But fortunately my lighter chassis, his longer braking distances and slightly slower acceleration because of fuel load meant he couldn't find anywhere to get close enough to attempt the pass. I was still bloody glad to see the flag though as I'm sure given another 5 laps he would have been able to make a pass stick.

Interesting point made by Dave R. I hadn't realised my time would have placed me 2nd in the works race. (Axel's time would have been easily quickest had he not blown his engine).

It's a shame the numbers have been so low generally in the Privateers class with Gareth and Axel only playing a bit part this season, Pepe off on the motorcycle trip of a lifetime and a number of others only making a few appearances. :(

It's also a shame I'll probably be pushed into the Works class for the next season, not because I don't want to trundle around at the rear of the field but more because based on this years showing possibly drivers should be moving in the opposite direction to even up the numbers.

Extending Dave's comment about the finishing times for Porto, Just for fun I had a look at the other races and can see the following. The final column shows where the winning Privateer finishing time would have placed in the Works division. . . . .

The champ is usually asked to move up for the next season and given that you have an unassailable lead in the championship (subject to moderation but you have driven cleanly all season, at least that has been my experience) that will be you John. A well deserved championship too, well done and congratulations.

Judging by your works/privs analysis you could be battling for mid field places not trundling round at the back.  Provided you have someone of a similar pace to dice with the racing will be fun.

You'd be doing well in Works John. Apart from your respectable speed, you're one of the most solid drivers! ;)

PS: I had almost a minute lead when I blew up late race at Works Porto  :angel:
